St. Petersburg University has an interesting history.

Did you know that the university was founded by Peter the Great in 1724?

Michail Lomonosov was the university rector from 1758-1760.

In the 18th century several hundreds of students graduated from the university with degrees in history, philosophy, law, physics,

mathematics and oriental languages.

Among the alumni there are writers and poets I. S. Turgenev, N. A. Nekrasov, N. S. Gumilev, O. E. Mandelshtam,

composers M. I. Glinka, I. F. Stravinski, artists M. A. Vrubel, V. D. Polenov,

politicans P. A. Stolipin, V. I. UIyanov-Lenin.

Today the beautiful university library has 6,574,000 books.

Over half a million visitors come to see these books and the library every year.
