Christopher Columbus was a man of deep devo on who took his faith extremely seriously. He is o en described as a man of righteousness and deep piety. He observed the fasts of the church faithfully, confessed and made communion
o en, hated blasphemy and swearing, and was devoted to Our Lady and to St. Francis.
As a Third Order Franciscan, Columbus was o en seen wearing the Franciscan habit. His close personal associa on with the Franciscans was instrumental in securing contacts in the royal court and provided much needed encouragement and support. In fact, his son, Diego, remained in the care of the Franciscans at the monastery during the first voyage.
Columbus mo o was a fi ng prayer for an explorer: ‘Jesus cum Maria sit nobis in via.” The literal meaning, “May Jesus with Mary be with us on the way”
On May 20, 1506, the Vigil of the Ascension, Christopher Columbus lay on his deathbed surrounded by his fellow Franciscans and his sons. His last words echoed those of Christ on the cross: “In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum.” (Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.)
The Knights of Columbus, the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organiza on, was named in honor of the mariner Christopher Columbus.
Columbus Day is celebrated this year on October 9th.

Dear Friends at Saint Paul: We have some thank yous to extend because we have so many blessings to celebrate! For the PICNIC – Many thanks to those who par cipated in the picnic and the organizers, especially Maggie Costandy and DeLesa Conway, and their primary helpers: Missy Wallace, Clara Castano, Joyce McGregor, the Knights of Columbus, the Aamen Group, Laura McDaniels, Caroline Edwards, and --oh – about a HUNDRED others! Many thanks for the Tents and support we regularly count on from Oscar's Mortuary, Co en Funeral Service and Pollock-Best Funeral Home. Thanks to Fernando Ortega Mar nez and his helpers for the all night BBQ cooking and chopping and flavoring. Thanks to the children's games workers and helpers and the clean up crews and the teenagers. Thank you to all who prepared casseroles or salads or desserts or drinks or made it all happen in any other way! We started with a beau ful outdoor Mass, with a joint choir and many helpers. It was a great day, great weather with wonderful and plen ful food and even more wonderful (and plen ful) people! Thank you! For the SOUND UPGRADES in Church – The ini al reac on has been posi ve for the equipment and tuning changes in the Sanctuary and Narthex. There is a lot to learn for making the new system work to its best advantage and lots of minor adjustments. Fuller's Music on Trent Road did the design and installa on, tuning and training: thanks to David Rhodes and his crew. Please let me know how it sounds to you! For the VOLUNTEERS for Liturgical ministries – I have clearly stated our goals for ministry as goals of inclusion and empowerment for every person. I pray that everyone will answer the call – for it comes from the Lord. The priest can't make you generous or great or competent... God does! God has made you Spirit-inspired and Christ-centered – that's who you really are! Bap sm makes us co-operators with God in the work of crea on and the work of re-crea on.
“TAG, You're it!” is a working by-line for what we're trying to accomplish.
“Every person has a ministry” is another example of the same message.
“Involvement is the Plan” is another way to say it. Service at Mass
celebrates the gi ed-ness that crea on really is.
is a way for us to act on the grace of re-crea on and hope that is the heart of Chris an Life.
thanks God for taking care of us and lets us worship Him in the way that He has chosen for uni ng us to Christ.
honors every parishioner with whom we share such precious treasure.
makes us available to one another and affirms everyone’s place and worth in the Church. Through Christ, with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, we give glory and honor to God the Father, especially when we may feel shy or uncertain or out of place or unworthy or pre-occupied or apathe c or disconnected or uninterested or – fill in your excuse – None of these obstacles ma er. Playing a part in the Liturgy is our way of ac ng like Heaven has begun, our wounds are healed and our future is clear! Service in the Mass says that we are living in the Kingdom, not in the world. It's the Kingdom that gives us our agenda, teaches us the truth and renews our spirits – not the world. The “aches and pains” of daily living are very true and burdensome but they are not the whole truth... aspira on, crea vity, community, worship tell us more of the truth. Love, sacrifice and resurrec on tell us even more of the truth. Like I said at the beginning: there is so much to be thankful for and so many blessings to enjoy and applaud and share and celebrate. Hey, we call it “Eucharist” don't we?... Thanksgiving! Peace,
