Dear Friends in Christ,

I welcome you back to our regular season after the summer season. Thank you for being part of this spiritual family.

As we begin, please look in the bulletin (page 4) this weekend for the Annual Financial Report for Fiscal Year 2018-2019. The summary of the revenue and expenses is only meaningful when we consider the life of the parish which is only possible thanks to your generosity. Page 5 of this bulletin highlights some of the many ways that the parish benefits from your stewardship. As you will notice, the Financial Report on

page 4 also details our 2019-2020 budget. Thank you for your gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure, putting your faith into action at St. Patrick Church.

I am happy to report that our parish continues to grow with an increasing number of registrations: From 40 new families in 2016 to 46 in 2017, to 51 in 2018. However, as you may have seen in our weekly bulletin reports, our Sunday offer-tory income has decreased over time or remained flat, at best. As a result, our parish Pastoral and Finance councils are supporting, with my approval, a renewed Increase Offertory Program (IOP) for 2019, similar to the one we pre-sented in 2016. We will start next weekend. Our theme for this new initiative is Called to be Agents of God’s Love in the World. This week, you will receive a packet in the mail with my invitation to participate by prayerfully considering an increase to your current Sunday offertory. Please complete the Commitment Card enclosed and bring it to Mass next weekend, September 21st and 22nd.

In light of our Annual Ministry Fair after all the Masses this weekend, think of the ways that you can also share your time and talent with the parish. Please take some time to peruse our website at www.StPatrickMcHenry.org for addition-al information and a list of all our ministries, in order to discover the services that may serve your needs and how you can also be part of our journey of faith. Please visit and or contact our office either by email at [email protected] or telephone, as our staff is eager to help. Also feel free to contact me and or any of the Ministry Chairpersons with your questions and interests, and let us know how we can best serve your needs and those of your family. I invite you to join any of our ministries. Remember to also bring your Time & Talent commitment card with you to Mass next weekend.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Godwin

Saint(s) of the Week

Saint Robert Bellarmine Priest and Doctor of the Church

October 4, 1542 – September 17, 1621 Memorial: September 17

Patron Saint: Catechists, Catechumens

When Robert Bellarmine was ordained in 1570, the study of Church history and the

fathers of the Church was in a state of neglect. A promis-ing scholar from his youth in Tuscany, he devoted his energy to these two subjects, as well as to Scripture, in order to systematize Church doctrine against the attacks of the Protestant Reformers.

His most famous work is his three-volume Disputations on the Controversies of the Christian Faith. Particularly note-worthy are the sections on the temporal power of the pope and the role of the laity. Bellarmine incurred the anger of monarchists in England and France by showing the divine-right-of-kings theory untenable. He developed the theory of the indirect power of the pope in temporal affairs; although he was defending the pope against the Scottish philoso-pher Barclay, he also incurred the ire of Pope Sixtus V.

Bellarmine was made a cardinal by Pope Clement VIII. While he occupied apartments in the Vatican, Bellarmine relaxed none of his former austerities. He limited his

household expenses to what was barely essential, eating only the food available to the poor. He was known to have ransomed a soldier who had deserted from the army and he used the hangings of his rooms to clothe poor people, remarking, “The walls won’t catch cold.” Among many activities, Bellarmine became theologian to Pope Clement VIII, preparing two catechisms which have had great influ-ence in the Church.

The last major controversy of Bellarmine’s life came in 1616 when he had to admonish his friend Galileo, whom he admired. He delivered the admonition on behalf of the Holy Office, which had decided that the heliocentric theory of Copernicus was contrary to Scripture. The admonition amounted to a caution against putting forward—other than as a hypothesis—theories not yet fully proven. This shows that saints are not infallible.

Robert Bellarmine died on September 17, 1621. The process for his canonization was begun in 1627, but was delayed until 1930 for political reasons, stemming from his writings. In 1930, Pope Pius XI canonized him, and the next year declared him a doctor of the Church.

Robert Bellarmine devoted his life to the study of Scripture and Catholic doctrine. His writings help us understand that the real source of our faith is not merely a set of doctrines, but rather the person of Jesus still living in the Church today.

St. Patrick Church is embarking in an important initiative to increase our parish Sunday collections. This past week, we sent you a packet of information detailing the reasons for this program. You will receive a brochure and a commitment card this week asking that you please pray about increasing your Sunday offertory.

Please read through the brochure, consider your current tithing along with the needs of our parish, and take some time to pray about increasing your Gift of Treasure to the Lord. Feel free to contact the parish office with any questions at 815-385-0025 or at [email protected].

It is critical for the success of the program that this parish-wide commitment be made by ALL of our parishioners in a timely manner. Please complete your commitment card and bring it to Mass NEXT WEEKEND, September 21st and 22nd. Thank you very much.

St. Patrick Respect Life

Spiritual Adoption Program—Month 1

About a month ago, our spiritually adopted babies were conceived and we named them and put their names at the foot of the altar. 10 boys (Aaron Michael, Dustin, Girard, Anton Edward, Anthony, Andrew, Albert, Patrick, Tommy, John) and 9 girls (Sophia Rose, Paisleigh, Yoda, Rosemary, Charlotte Rose, Malinda, Joy, Theresa, Jennifer).

Spiritual Adoption Prayer

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to protect the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted.” Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

I have been very active the past month. I am 10,000 times larger than I was at conception. My eyes and nose are starting to form and I already have arm buds and leg buds. I have the building blocks for my brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. My heart, no larger than a poppy seed, has been beating since day 18 and is now pumping blood through my own circulatory system and my blood type may already be different from my mother’s. Thank you for the prayers that the Lord of Life might help her give me the most precious gift of all - the gift of life.

“Surely I was sinful at birth...sinful from the time by mother con-ceived me.” - David

Word of Life

“Throughout salvation history, God has welcomed repentant sinners with special joy. Jesus concludes the parable of the lost sheep with these words: ‘there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have not need of repentance.’ (LK 15:7)”

USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Life Matters: Forgiveness and Healing After Abortion”

Fr. Godwin visited Montini Primary and spent some time teaching the students about the Eucharist.

Catechetical Sunday September 15, 2019

O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family.

We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs.

May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and chal-lenges, is compassionate and consoles.

We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church.

We ask this in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Sacraments Baptism of Infants or children

under 7 years of age: To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please con-sider scheduling your child’s Baptism before your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is required for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born. You must be a regis-tered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
