Page 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,

Thank you for your prayers and good wishes during the ImaBridge Africa mission trip and my vacation in Nigeria. I had a good time with my family, relatives and friends. I am grateful to Father John Jam-nicky, Father Jim McKitrick, Father Geoff Wirth, Deacon Dennis, the Parish Staff and all of you, our parishioners, who supplied help during my absence. Thank You.

In this weekend’s Gospel reading (Mark 1:21-28), we hear about Jesus’ healing of Peter’s mother-in-law. This was a very personal healing. He approached her, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Ad-ditionally, in reaching out to “all of Galilee” Jesus responds to the universal human condition of misery and hopelessness. But He always does so in a very personal way. A sick child instinctively seeks the

touch of a loving parent; he or she wants the parent to sit by the bed, to be near. Even as adults, when we are ill or down-and-out, we seek comfort from a trusted and caring other who grasps our hand. As Jesus demonstrated, in times of trouble we need the personal touch and presence of another. During this week, to whom can we bring Jesus’ healing touch through our personal touch and presence?

We also rely on the intercession of the saints for our spiritual needs. In memory of St. Blaise whose memorial was this past Saturday, February 3rd, we will give the blessing of throats at the end of each Mass this weekend with these words: “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

We congratulate our children who are preparing to be confirmed as they participate in their last Confirmation class this weekend. Please pray for them in anticipation of their Confirmation by Bishop Malloy on Sunday February 25th.

On Monday to Wednesday of this week, all the priests of the Rockford Diocese will be in Fontana for the winter Clergy Conference. After morning Mass on Monday, Deacon Dennis will help with communion services on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

In Christ, Fr. Godwin

Winter weather often brings an end of sea-sonal construction jobs, leading to financial hardships for many in this field. St. Vincent de Paul has received calls from several fami-lies, looking for help in finding community

resources for help with their utility bills and with food for their families. Vincentians are knowledgeable about and share information about local and county resources for those in need; members bring bags of food and grocery store certificates on their visits. Their resources, food and prayerful support helps sustain and strengthen the needy in our community. Your donations make this support pos-sible. John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love on another as I have loved you.

Received from FISH of McHenry, Inc.

Dear St. Patrick,

Thank you for your $500 donation to FISH of McHenry Food Pantry. Your gift, multiplied by 8 in the purchasing power it provides to us with Northern Illinois Food Bank, is helping to fill the pantry shelves this holiday season, for over 650 households that we serve each month. As we look ahead to the coming year, we hank you for renewing hope to our neighbors facing hunger, by offering your generous support. Wishing you a happy & healthy 2018, from all of us at FISH.

With Warm Regards, Sue Kapraun (Director)

You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This is a two session class that is be-gun on the 1st Sunday and completed on the 3rd Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

Annulment Process - Information

If you or someone you know needs a previous marriage investigated for its validity or invalidity (the annulment pro-cess) so that you may fully participate in your Catholic faith or become Catholic please call the Tribunal Office at 815-399-4300.

If you are new to the area or visiting from another parish, wel-come to our faith community! Please visit our website www.stpatrickmchenry.org to find out more about St. Pat-rick parish. We invite you to become a member of our parish. If you’d like a registration form, please contact the St. Patrick parish office at 815-385-0025, email us at [email protected] or you may print a form from the parish website.

Vocation Corner: Are you on Schedule?

I’m sure that everyone reading this will agree that life can get very busy very fast, and that if we’re not careful, we can get completely swept away by everything that we have to do. In the midst of this busyness it is so easy to treat God and prayer like one more thing on our sched-ule. We may even be tempted to view time set aside with God to be a burden on us that makes it harder to get things done. Nothing however could be further from the truth!

There is a story about a priest who told Mother Theresa that he was too busy to pray. He explained his daily schedule to her, beginning with waking up at 5:00 A.M. and finally ending at 11:00 P.M. each and every day. He asked her advice as to what he should do in order to find time to pray. She just asked: “You said you get up at 5:00 A.M.?” He replied “Yes.” She responded “Then get up at 4:00!” He began doing this and as a result of offering up that extra hour of sleep for Christ, He was miraculously energized and felt even more refreshed than when he pre-viously got up at 5:00. What does this mean for us? No matter how hard it is to fit in, we have to schedule quality time with the Lord. It is only in this way that we will be able to discern what we really ought to be doing with the rest of our time! So take time to pray and trust that God will take care of the rest of your schedule!

- Fr. Romke
