SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Some years ago Eddie Fisher had a number-one hit song called “Oh! my Pa-Pa,” which

was later recorded by Connie Francis, the Everly Brothers, and many others. Jim Nabors also sang it on his old TV sit-com “Gomer Pyle, USMC.” The song was originally a German one—Swiss, more precisely. It was about a daughter remembering her father, who had once been a famous clown.

Oh! my Pa-Pa, To me he was so wonderful, Oh! my Pa-Pa, To me he was so good. No one else could be so lovable. Oh! my Pa-Pa, He always understood.

Gone are the days When he would take me on his knee And with a smile He’d change my tears to laughter. Oh! my Pa-Pa, So funny, so adorable, Always the clown So funny in his way.

Oh! my Pa-Pa, To me he was so wonderful. Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

The great English writer Samuel Johnson once wrote a poem recalling one of his important memories of his father:

Clear as glass the stream still wanders through green fields. Here, as a boy, I bathed my tender limbs, unskilled, frustrated, while with gentle voice my father from the bank taught me to swim.

Johnson was only twenty-two when his father died. One day young Sam had refused to go with him to Uttoxeter, a nearby town where Michael Johnson would sell books in the market place to support his family. The incident lodged in Johnson’s memory for the rest of his life. Not long before his own death, Samuel Johnson said to a friend,

I desired to atone for this fault; I went to Uttoexeter in very bad weather, and stood for a considerable time bareheaded in the rain, on the spot where my father’s stall used to stand. In contrition I stood, and I hope the penance was expiatory.

Today a statue there commemorates the incident. (continued on next page)

Saint Joseph Church has been blessed to have had seminarian Carlo Santa Teresa (shown second from right) assist in our parish at Mass, at baptisms, in Religious Education classes and much more. On June 13, he was ordained a transitional deacon for the Diocese of Camden. The ceremony was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Galloway Township, New Jersey, and marks the completion of his year of Third Theology (at Seton Hall Unversity’s Immaculate Conception Seminary). This final stage before his journey to the priesthood will culminate next spring is a momentous occasion. Deacon Carlo calls his vocation “a blessing and a privilege to be called to be God’s instrument, to bring hope and the Good News to others.” Joining Deacon Carlo at this special ceremony were Saint Joseph priests (L-R) Fr. John Radwan, Monsignor David Hubba and Fr. Anthony Di Stefano. We, the parishioners of Saint Joseph, send our prayers and good wishes to Deacon Carlo Santa Teresa and look forward to celebrating his ordination to the priesthood.

(From the Pastor’s Desk—continued )

Paul Moses, in an article for the Wall Street Journal a few years ago, recalled a conversation with Fr. Alex Joseph, a priest at St. Peter’s, the oldest Catholic church in New York city, located a short block from the World Trade Center. Fr. Alex said to him, “Our fathers are always with us.” And so they are, even if they have long since gone to God’s home. Soren Johnson, in another article from Columbia, called “The Science of Fatherhood,” reminded fathers who are now raising children that their time counts:

No pressure, dad, but from the time you see that little one for the very first time, the clock is ticking. You must make a decision then, and every day after, to be an involved father. Yes to cuddling, to rough-housing, to making the ball games, rehearsals and special moments. The payoff is huge, as studies show that every hour you invest with your child will help them reap priceless benefits in terms of future health, relationships and career.

Being a father is a wonderful and high calling. To keep faith with it, fathers have to actively practice their faith, and pray. I hope this prayer will help you:

O Lord, I pray for manly virtue, that I may fulfill my vocation: to be an anchor of strength and love for my wife and children, overcoming impulses of pride and selfishness; to guide and form my children well, first of all by my own example, finding the right balance between tender affection and firmness; to be a man of principle and charity at the work-place, quick to smile and always diligent in my responsibilities, to be a man of prayer and the sacraments, a faithful follower of Your Gospel in the midst of my parish. In all these things and more, O Lord, may I be a good steward of the countless blessings You have bestowed on me. Amen.
