In the first reading today, the second Sunday of Advent, the prophet Baruch invites Jerusalem,
who was once desolate and deserted, to rejoice. Her children who were in exile will soon be
coming back, led by God Himself to their freedom and salvation. Jerusalem is a figure of the
Church who also suffers when we, her children, are estranged from her or are “in exile” due to
sin. God leads us to freedom by giving us His Son, whose birth we celebrate each Christmas.
Advent is the season to make ourselves ready for His coming.
In the Gospel, John the Baptist appears on the banks of the Jordan and proclaims a baptism of
repentance like a “voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make
straight His paths.” John was a very simple and humble man who pointed everyone to Jesus,
claiming “He must increase; I must decrease.” (John 3:30) Jesus had said of John, “Among
those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist”. (Mt. 11:11)
John did not only invite all to prepare the way of the Lord; he himself practiced what he
preached. He withdrew to the desert and lived simply (clothed with camel’s hair and ate locusts
and wild honey). In short, he detached himself from all that is not of God. We, too, are encour-
aged to live simply and focus more on what will bring us closer to God. Our lives should mirror
what we believe. This Advent season offers us a wonderful opportunity for prayer and acts of
penance. With God’s grace, we can then receive the blessings of Christmas with greater fullness.
A Family Christmas Play “Simbang Gabi”
Last Saturday after the 5:00 pm Mass, we enjoyed a family Christmas Play, Simbang Gabi, in the
Church. It was a beautiful presentation where most of the ethnic communities of the Parish par-
ticipated. I am sure many of you were inspired and spiritually strengthened by being there. I con-
gratulate Bing Custodio and her team for this remarkable presentation about the life of Jesus
our Savior.
A special opportunity for Confession
We have many opportunities here at St. Nick’s for confession. On Monday to Saturday we have
confession at 11:45-12:00. Every Saturday we have confession from 4:00 to 4:45pm. On Mon-
day, December 17th we will be celebrating the Advent Reconciliation Monday from 4:00-
8:00PM in the Church. I encourage all of you to find some time to receive God’s grace.
Come, Lord Jesus!

Second SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Season of Advent We are in the second week of the Season of Advent during which we recall the thousands of years of wait-ing for God to fulfill the promise made to Adam and Eve that a savior would come to save us from the con-sequences of Adam and Eve’s sin of disobedience.
In the readings during Advent we hear the prophets time and again calling the people to conversion. The prophets also never tired of giving hope for the coming of the promise savior.
Please check the bulletin boards at the entrances to the church to see symbols of some of the people and events that led up to the birth of the Prom-ised Messiah on Christmas Day.
Christmas Program All of the children from our Faith Formation Program will be involved in the presentation of a Christmas Pro-gram on Monday, December 17th at 7:00 PM in Tolen-tine Hall.
This presentation will include parts of God’s plan of salvation leading up to the birth of Jesus on Christmas. ALL are invited to come to this Parish event. The chil-dren and their parents need the support and care of our entire Parish community of Saint Nicholas of Tolentine.
Please do try to plan ahead so that you may be counted among our audience.
God bless you!

parents continue to struggle to provide for the basic needs of their families.
This year, St. Nicholas of Tolentine will be accepting donations to support –

toys as well as gift cards. Gift cards are always preferred as they provide families
with the added dignity of choice.

residents to personally select items for themselves or their children.
