51 N. MacDade Blvd., Darby, PA – 610-583-4663 – www.mothershome.org
Dear Monsignor Mesure, On behalf of Mothers’ Home, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and your parishioners for their gracious donation of $ 1,307.57. Monetary gifts to Mothers’ Home are so important to keeping the daily operations of Mothers’ Home functioning. Your donations help us to be able to purchase much-needed items for the residents and their children as they move toward reaching their goals while here at Mothers’ Home. Other monetary support, such as grants, must be used for specific reasons, but the baby bottle drives enable us to provide the additional resources needed for general operating expenses. Mothers’ Home is able to provide housing, care, and resources for up to 24 pregnant women and their babies at one given time. With your help, we have been able to do some very much needed updating to our building. We have also been able to provide some very insightful classes and training s for the residents with the funding provided by the baby bottle drives. Your support for our mission at Mothers’ Home is so greatly appreciated. Without your willingness to participate in the baby bottle drives, we could not accomplish all that we do for these women and their babies. Sincerely, Brigid Risko Executive Director
The second collection envelope next weekend is for
the Care of Aging Priests. This is a special
opportunity to express your gratitude for the many
blessings received through the ministry of our priests.
This collection helps subsidize the care of aging and
ill priests in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
(All second collection envelopes, clearly marked as
such, should be placed in the main collection at the
offertory of the Mass next weekend.)
2016 CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL
For 2016 there is a new vision guiding the Catholic
Charities Appeal. In addition to our traditional and vital
work among the poorest and most disadvantaged, this year
Catholic Charities is targeting virtually every aspect of
Catholic life for enrichment and improvement. We are
taking on a bigger challenge than ever before. This year,
your donations will benefit nearly 180 ministries and
programs helping everything from childcare to retirement
living, from homelessness to growing the Church on
college campuses. However, doing more good requires
raising more money. So we ask you to look deep in your
heart and be as generous as you can to help us reach our
$15 million goal. The Catholic Charities Appeal is the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s single most important
fundraiser and we’re counting on your support.
Last year, donations from Saint Matthias amounted to
$49,197, or 118% of our goal! A job well done ~ thank
you for your generous response! With everyone giving
whatever they can, large or small, we can certainly top our
goal again this year and help so many struggling people in
this area. As Jesus told us, “‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you
did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
In addition to the envelope in your packet from the parish,
the Archdiocese also sent out information and envelopes
which you may use directly. You may also contribute on-
line at www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org. Be sure to use the
pull down menu to designate Saint Matthias as your parish.
All donations are placed in a separate 501 c (3) Catholic
Charities fund and cannot be used for any other purpose.
There will be a special SECOND COLLECTION
TODAY for the Catholic Charities Appeal. If you are not
prepared today to make your donation, please place it in
the collection next weekend, clearing marking the envelope
for Catholic Charities. Together we can truly make a
difference in the lives of those who are in need!!
Congratulations to Eva Kraus, grade 8, who attained
Distinguished Honors at the Academy of Notre Dame
de Namur, and to Sarah Laske, grade 12, who
attained Distinguished Honors at Merion Mercy
Academy.

Tuesdays of Lent
7:00 p.m.
Followed by Confessions
The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as a
minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen
years of age and older are bound to abstain from
eating meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of
Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen
years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-
ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting
themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday
and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on
those days are to be light.
The Season of Lent We began the Lenten Season on Ash Wednesday. While many look forward to this time for opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal, quite often many of us see it as a liturgical season to dread. We focus on “What am I going to give up?” “How long can I live without whatever it is I am going to give up?” “How many more days before I don’t have to give up whatever it is that I am giving up?” Who wouldn’t dread a liturgical season with such a narrow focus? Over these next few weeks, we are all encouraged to begin reflecting anew on the real purpose of Lent, the power such a season can be for us, and the real potential for a deeper commitment to our Catholic faith, and most important, a deeper communion of love with God. Such a deeper understanding could give us a new attitude for Lent. Baptism is one of Lent’s foundational focus. At the Easter Vigil, the catechumens (referred to as “the elect”) will be fully initiated as Catholics through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. It is no coincidence that on Easter Sunday, all the baptized will renew our baptismal promises. Note that I said we are going to “renew” our baptismal promises and not merely “repeat” them. “Repeating” simply recalls something that happened in the past. “Renew” is entirely different. “Renewing” our baptismal promises recognizes something still foundational in our life. Renewing our baptismal promises opens our hearts to God’s grace. Grace reveals God’s great love for us and God’s purpose for our life. This great divine love energizes our own love and leads us to a deeper commitment to live these promises more faithfully. Easter is one time in the liturgical year for us to remember that we are baptized once for a lifetime and not merely once in a lifetime. Lent is the time set aside to prepare us to make that renewal faithfully. Our world, our country and our Church all need us to rediscover the beauty and power of baptism and our call to be co-redeemers with the Lord Jesus Christ. Our baptism calls us to a life of holiness that reveals Jesus’ great and merciful love to all humanity and all creation. Our faith also commits us to restoring the human community and all creation to a life of justice, peace, and solidarity.
