gentleness, self-control.”) What evidence of these 12 (or
9) fruits do you see, what progress, in your own life? Give
examples. Tell someone. And, just as important, in whom
do you see these fruits? If you were asked to name 12
people, each of them embodying a particular fruit of the
Spirit, who would they be?
The 75th
anniversary of D-Day was last Thursday, June
6. I can’t let it go without mention. Recently I watched a
program about World War II that described that day. I
glimpsed soldiers with rosaries at one point. There was
also footage of a chaplain giving communion to soldiers
ready to make the crossing: He was praying with them. It
was only in the background, so his words were difficult to
hear & only partial. He was saying a prayer—line by line,
having the soldier repeat each line after him. One phrase
stood out in particular: “to fight & not heed the wounds.”
It was the unmistakable prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola
that he was using: Dearest Lord,/ teach me to be
generous:/ teach me to serve you as you deserve;/ to give
& not to count the cost,/ to fight & not to heed the
wounds,/ to toil & not to seek for rest,/ to labor & not to
ask for reward/ save that of knowing I am doing your will. (If you’re not familiar with this you may want to be.)
On a lighter note, a day brightener. (I have a collection
of these, so they don’t get lost—so they can brighten more
than one day.) It was last Sunday. We were still singing
the recessional of the 10:00 Mass & I’d just gotten to the
entry. A man was holding & bouncing little 3-year-old
Piper who hadn’t quite made it to the end of Mass. She
was busy (what 3-year-old isn’t?) but paused &, giving me
the once-over, said, “I like your costume.”
Wednesdays are a little quieter these summer days &
there are no Sunday morning catechism visits between
Masses. There’s a pause in our religious education pro-
grams. But in a deeper sense, there isn’t. 1st, religious
education isn’t only a “program;” it’s a regular part of our
lives. It’s ongoing. And 2nd
, it isn’t only education. It’s
formation. Faith & all we learn about God & Christ & his
Church & the virtues & prayer is formative. It needs to be
the most influential part of our life—not the culture, not
our jobs, not the daily routine, but our faith. So even tho at
this time of the year our faith formation “program” pauses,
much of what it’s really all about can continue.
