From the fall of our first parents to the most recent family squabble, the world has held onto one philosophy

when it comes to relationships: make sure you get your way, no matter what. Stand your ground. Even if you

discover you were wrong, don’t give in. Do not submit.

How different is the way of the Lord! Take today’s second reading. St. Paul tells us that Jesus didn’t demand

that we submit to him. Instead, he submitted to us. He who is Lord of all took “the form of a slave,” pouring himself

out in miracles of healing and deliverance (Philippians 2:7). He who is the wisdom of God patiently taught the way

of forgiveness and holiness. And he who is pure and undefiled stooped to wash dirty, dusty feet.

And in his final act of submission, he offered no resistance when we mocked him, beat him, and crucified him.

Not because he was weak, but because he was strong. Not because he had lost, but because he knew that this was

the way to win. And God proved him right. Because Jesus chose humility over pride and service over force, his

Father raised him up and exalted him as Lord.

Jesus didn’t come to win an argument; he came to win our hearts. By humbling himself like this, he showed

that his love is real, solid, and eternal. Now he asks us to follow his example. Just as he came not to be served but

to serve, he asks us to serve each other. He asks us to win each other’s hearts rather than try to break each other’s

wills.

This isn’t always easy. Sometimes it means caring for a fussy in-law, cooperating with an unhappy coworker, or

cleaning your teenager’s bedroom—again. Neither is it always successful. There’s no guarantee that you will win

the other person’s heart. But you will be pleasing Jesus, and that is its own reward.

“Lord, teach me how to become a servant after your own heart.”

H u m b l y r e g a r d o t h e r s a s m o r e i m p o r t a n t t h a t y o u r s e l v e s !

Desde la caída de nuestros primeros padres hasta la más reciente disputa familiar, el mundo se ha aferrado a una

filosofía cuando se trata de relaciones: asegúrate de salirte con la tuya, pase lo que pase. Mantente firme. Incluso si

descubres que te equivocaste, no te rindas. No envíe.

Holy Spirit, we know that trusting you means letting go of our need to control things, floating rather than

steering. Give us the grace to loosen our grip and let you lead the way. Amen.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Friday October 2, 2020

9:30 am to 6:00 pm in the St. Ferdinand Chapel

You are invited Friday, October 2nd, to come and receive the graces promised from the source of ultimate

love, Jesus Christ.

Something is Happening Within Me

by: Fr. Henri Nouwen

Jesus, work in me and draw me more deeply into my relationship with you.

You are needed to make sure the church is never empty while the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. There

will be a sign-up sheet in the Chapel. We will be following the social distancing guidelines as we do at

Sunday Mass.

The simple fact of being for one hour in the presence of the Lord and of showing him all that I feel, think,

sense, and experience, without trying to hide anything, must please him. Somehow, somewhere, I know that

he loves me, even though I do not hear a voice as I hear human words of consolation, even though I do not see

a smile as I can see a human face. Still the Lord speaks to me, looks at me, and embraces me there, where I

am still unable to notice it.

The only way I become aware of his presence is in that remarkable desire to return to that quiet chapel and

be there without any real satisfaction. Yes, I notice, maybe only retrospectively, that my days and weeks are

different days and weeks when they are held together by these regular “useless” times.

God is greater than my senses, greater than my thoughts, greater than my heart. I do believe that he

touches me in places that are unknown even to myself. I seldom can point directly to these places; but when I

feel this inner pull to return again to that hidden hour of prayer, I realize that something is happening that is

so deep that it becomes like the riverbed through which the waters can safely flow and find their way to the

open sea.

Virtual Retreat – Listening to the Voice of God with Fr. Albert Haase, OFM

The Cedarbrake Saying Yes retreat is Oct. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Franciscan Father Albert Haase will explore

practical ways to grow in a deeper relationship with God by learning how He speaks in our everyday lives. The retreat is

based on his book, “Saying Yes: Discovering and Responding to God’s Will in Your Life.” Father Haase is a popular

preacher, teacher, spiritual director and chaplain at Cedarbrake. Cost for the day is $40.

Register online at https://www.austindiocese.org/cedarbrake-calendar or call 254-780-2436 if you have

any questions. THIS RETREAT WILL BE RECORDED & CAN BE MADE AVAILABLE TO YOU AT A DIFFERENT TIME.

Special Collection—Peter’s Pence

Next Sunday, October 4, 2020

The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to

support the most disadvantaged – victims of war,

oppression, natural disasters and others in need of

emergency assistance. Pope Francis has asked us to

“care for those who are in need of attention,

understanding and help, to bring them the warm

closeness of God’s love through tangible actions of

sensitivity, of sincere affection and of love.” The Holy

Father uses the Peter’s Pence Collection to strengthen

dioceses, religious orders and struggling communities

of faith when they need it most.
