MARC.

WE ARE WITNESS TO THE BEAUTY OF LIFE

By Sr. Graciela Ramos, MESST

Last Saturday, our St. Lawrence community participated in the 13th Annual Walk for Life in San Francisco. It was an exciting moment, where some St. Lawrence families (adults, teens, young children and babies) joined a great number of Catholics and non-Catholics for the Walk. We started our day leaving at 8:00am to make it on time to St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco for the Mass preceding our Walk celebrated by Bishop Cordileone, Cardinal Levada, and a group bishops and priests. In His homily, Archbishop Cordileone, reminded us of the life of St. Agnes (whose memorial was celebrated that day), her courage to defend her faith in Jesus, and finally invited us and encouraged us to follow her footsteps in defending what Jesus loves: LIFE, especially the life of those who have no voice. We were then sent out for our Walk. We met at the Civic Center Plaza and were blessed with a beautiful weather–no rain. First timers to the Walk for Life from our parish commented on the unity, peace and reverence of every moment, from the Mass, the waiting time at the Civic Center Plaza, to the message of the speakers and the Walk itself. We did encounter as always people that disagreed with us, some with aggressive comments and violent signs but we also encountered some that were respectful. I personally reflected on the significance of this year’s Walk and what is going on in our country as the new government leaders take over. In the midst of the conflicts and division, there we were standing out again, speaking in silence on behalf of the unborn babies. We were not there for the president, nor for our political views. We were there in unity for one cause: LIFE. We were also blessed to have our pastor, Fr. Ernesto Orci, walk with us, as we, as a community, were witness to the beauty of Life and the values of our faith.

At the end of the fourth century, a woman named Etheria made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her journal, discovered in 1887, gives an unprecedented glimpse of liturgical life there. Among the celebrations she describes is the Epiphany (January 6), the observance of Christ’s birth, and the gala procession in honor of his Presentation in the Temple 40 days later—February 15.

This feast emphasizes Jesus’ first appearance in the Temple more than Mary’s purification.

The observance spread throughout the Western Church in the fifth and sixth centuries. Because the Church in the West celebrated Jesus’ birth on December 25, the Presentation was moved to February 2, 40 days after Christmas.

At the beginning of the eighth century, Pope Sergius inaugurated a candlelight procession; at the end of the same century the blessing and distribution of candles which continues to this day became part of the celebration, giving the feast its popular name: Candlemass.

After three Sundays of hearing the words of Isaiah, today we hear from the prophet Zephaniah. This is one of only two times in the Lectionary cycle of readings and the only time in Year A that the worlds of this prophet are proclaimed.

Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of King Josiah in the seventh century. The protest against the worship of false gods, and the condemnation of the pro-Assyrian court ministers who served as regents during Josiah's minority, allow us to place the work in the first decade of the reign. Accordingly, the prophecy of Zephaniah comes rightly before that of Jeremiah, who was probably influenced by it in both language and ideas. The previous king, Manasseh, had not upheld the law, and so Zephaniah inherited and tried to overcome the faithlessness of the people. The age of Zephaniah was a time of religious degradation, when the old idolatries reappeared and men worshiped sun, moon, and stars. Rites completely alien to the pure monotheism taught by Moses flourished in Jerusalem. At the time, the oppression that the Kingdom of Judah faced from Assyria was waning, but another aggressive power, Babylon, was flexing its muscles.

The opening verse of today’s reading is the final verse of an oracle about the salvation of Judah and Jerusalem. This verse appeals to the Israelites to remain faithful to the Lord before the day of his anger, the day of the Lord, comes. On this day, the Lord will win victory over the oppressors, but only those who have remained faithful to him – the remnant – will be spared. Those followers of the Lord of justice and humility will be known by their actions. They will be people of righteousness, honesty, humility, and peace.
