We Care Because We Pray Second Sunday of Lent March 17, 2019 Santuario de San Antonio Parish Santuario de San Antonio Parish Forbes Park, Makati City Tel. nos.: 843-8830 / 31 www.ssaparish.com Saint Joseph the Listener By Javier Luis P Gomez In the Church’s lectionary, the readings for the solemnity of Saint Joseph offer two choices for the Gospel. One is from Matthew’s Gospel, where the angel appears to Joseph in a dream and assures him that Mary’s Child would be the promised Messiah. The other option for the solemnity involves the narrative of Joseph and Mary searching for and eventually finding Jesus in the temple. As I read both narratives, I could not help but smile as I recalled an observation that a spiritual director once gave to me about Joseph. She said, “you’d think that someone as important as Joseph would get more lines in Scripture, but the whole time he is just silent.” And though we might never know why the Gospels show us Joseph in this way, it leads us to reflect on the example of Saint Joseph, and how one must take time and listen to discern the will of God. Too often in our own lives we are reactionary. When something happens to us, when we get upset, or when we encounter something unexpected, we react right away. Maybe with fear, or anger, or even an outburst. It is not hard to imagine Joseph reacting very quickly and rashly to the news that Mary was pregnant. But he waited, he reflected, and more importantly he was open to God’s word. And thus when the angel speaks to him in his dream, Joseph is able to hear, and he’s able to do what God is asking him to do. On this Solemnity of Saint Joseph, we pray for the grace to be silent, and to listen - to God, to ourselves, to those people around us. And together may we discern the will of God for our world today.

Saint Joseph the ListenerBy Javier Luis P Gomez

In the Church’s lectionary, the readings for the solemnity of Saint Joseph offer two choices for the Gospel.

She said, “you’d think that someone as important as Joseph would get more lines in Scripture, but the whole time he is just silent.”

And though we might never know why the Gospels show us Joseph in this way, it leads us to reflect on the example of Saint Joseph, and how one must take time and listen to discern the will of God.

And

thus when the angel speaks to him in his dream, Joseph is able to hear, and he’s able to do what God is asking him to do.

On this Solemnity of Saint Joseph, we pray for the grace to be silent, and to listen - to God, to ourselves, to those people around us. And together may we discern the will of God for our world today.

PARISH BULLETIN

Buling Buling 2019: Millenials! It was another night of fun, entertainment and fellowship at SSAP last March 5, as we celebrated Buling Buling 2019. This year’s theme was: Millenials! The different ministries delighted everyone with their fantastic performances in their ‘Millenial’ costumes -- dancing to the beats of ‘Shake It Off’, ‘This Is Me’, ‘Party Rock’, ‘Boom boom’, among others and singing to the tunes of ‘Seasons of Love’ and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’, etc. While being entertained by the performances, everyone also enjoyed the good food -- salpicao rice, roast beef buns, pasta, arroz caldo, and other Filipino favorites.

The night ended with the burning of palms to be used for the imposition of ashes the following day, Ash Wednesday. Fr. Reu and Girlie Sison lead the prayers. While the palms were being burned, the bright flame illuminated the quadrangle and white smoke, which filled the air, smoothly moved up towards the Heavens. As Fr. Reu blessed the burning palms with Holy Water, the diminishing flames grew back, once again lighting the quadrangle. The Holy Spirit was truly with us in our community gathering.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Lenten Season.
