THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD ~ JANUARY 7, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Some newsworthy events of 2017 included: ∎ Natural Disasters:

○ An avalanche at an Italian resort in the central Abruzzo region killed 17 outright and left 12 missing. An attempted helicopter rescue of a skier later claimed 5 more lives. ○ Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria devastated Texas, Louisiana, Florida and Puerto Rico, producing up to 50 inches of rain and extensive damage. ○ Two major outbreaks of California wildfires killed at least 43 people, caused 300,000 to evacuate, destroyed 3,900 buildings and threatened thousands more. ∎ Moral outrages, mostly sexual abuse, forced the resignations or dismissals of Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly, top Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, TV interviewer Charlie Rose and a long list of politicians and celebrities (including The Metropolitan Opera’s longtime music director James Levine, Public Radio’s Garrison Keillor, NBC “Today” host Matt Lauer, longtime Michigan congressman John Conyers, Alabama senatorial candidate Roy Moore, and celebrity chef and restauranteur Mario Batali). The roll of accused is still cascading. ∎ Among outbreaks of violence in the U.S.: ○ The shooting of Louisiana congressman Steve Scalise by an anti-Trump extremist. ○ A white supremacist’s killing of 1 and injuring of 19 at a heated confrontation of demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia. The incident led to a widespread clamor to remove statues activists found objectionable, including those of Robert E. Lee and Christopher Columbus. (The attacks on Lee even led to the removal of Asian-American football announcer Robert Lee from covering a University of Virginia game.) ○ A shooter killed 58 and injured 523 at a country music concert in Las Vegas, the worst such crime in American history. ○ An ex-Air Force gunman killed 26 at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

(continued above)

∎ Acts of Jihadist and ISIS-related violence: ○ Palm Sunday bombings of Coptic churches in Egypt killed 47 and injured 109. In May, gunman attacked Coptic pilgrims, killing 28 (10 of them children) and injuring 24. In November in Egyptian Sinai, 20 gunmen slaughtered worshipers at the “heretical” Al Rawda Sufi mosque, killing 305 and injuring 100. ○ A May bombing in Manchester, U.K., killed 19 concert-goers and injured 50. A month later, 3 attackers killed 8 at London Bridge. In apparent retaliation, an Englishman drove his van into a crowd of Islamic worshipers outside a London mosque. ○ In an August attak, an ISIS assailant drove a van into pedestrians strolling on a popular Barcelona boulevard, killing 14 and injuring more than 100. ○ An October truck-bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia, took the lives of more than 300. ○ In November, a fanatic killed 8, including New Milford resident Darren Drake, and injured others in a truck attack in a lower- Manhattan park. In December, a bomber trying to kill commuters in a subway corridor below the Port Authority bus terminal injured just himself in a botched attempt. ∎ Other miscellaneous items: ○ Based on 2014 statistics, the latest available, 2,700 heads of charities received 7-figure salaries. ○ At a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio in July, 9 of 39 illegal immigrants were found dead in a truck that had no air conditioning or water. ○ Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi,” His only privately owned painting, fetched $450.3 million at a Christie’s auction. The buyer was Saudi Prince Mohammed, who has been portraying himself as a reformer rooting out corruption. ○ A just-revealed 2016 hack on Uber’s data base compromised the personal information of 57 million of its users.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “...they fell down and

worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and

offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh….”

MATTHEW 2:11

Notice the orderof events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then

they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!
