SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Saint Joseph Church

A GIFT OF LOVE On October 7, 2015 (the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary), the Tarantino family sent Katherine, their beloved wife, mother and nana, home to be with the Lord. In loving memory of her, they generously donated money to renovate Saint Joseph Church’s precious stained glass windows, thereby making the donations received in the We Are Living Stones capital campaign

available for other necessary projects in our church. (See page 7.) In appreciation for their generosity and in honor of Katherine, the parish surprised our donors by commissioning the beautiful sculptures of the Holy Family that now hang in the Elm Street foyer, a visible reminder of a cherished wife and mother’s love and the great blessings of family. May the beautiful images of the Holy Family serve as an inspiration to all of us and may God bless the Tarantinos and all the members of the family of Saint Joseph Church.

The “Holy Family” sculptured reliefs that now adorn the walls of Saint Joseph were created using a mixture of tinted resins and plaster. Artist Andrew Praszczyk and his wife Bozena received their Masters degrees from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland where they created various pieces in glass, ceramic and on canvas. Their work has been sold in Poland and Germany since the early 1980s. In 1995, they emigrated to the United States where they opened B&A Atelier Studio in Chester, NJ. They have created sculptures, reliefs, paintings, and stained glass for many area churches and have works residing in private collections throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Pius IX, the Church’s longest-serving pope, was the Vicar of Christ from 1846-1878. One day, as he walked from one wing of the

Vatican to another and passed through the Vatican art gallery, he paused by a group of tourists who were admiring its masterpieces and said to them, “Do you like them?” When the tourists described how magnificent they were, the pope asked them, “Would you like to see the treasure of the Vatican?”—to which they replied, “Would we!” And Pio Nono smiled and said: “I am a simple man, and to me the most precious treasure in all these gilded halls is right here.” And he opened his hands to show them the Rosary beads he had been praying with during his walk down the long corridors. Not far from where Pius IX recommended the Rosary, the great artist Michelangelo used to pray it at the end of each day when he was creating his immortal paintings for the Sistine Chapel. One of his biographers, Nathaniel Harris, notes that one section of The Last Judgment, known as “The Saved,” right above where the dead are rising from their graves, depicts how

… the saved souls are ascending to heaven, experiencing varying degrees of difficulty as they do so: some rise unaided, but others have to be lifted or pulled up by powerfully muscled angels. One couple are being hoisted aloft at the end of a rosary, to which they cling fearfully. Evidently they are poor sinners, saved only because of their submission to the True Church, symbolized by the rosary that had been discarded by the Protestant foes of the faith.

The Church never tires of recommending the Rosary to us , especially in October, the traditional month for emphasizing it. This beautifully peaceful and enormously powerful way of praying makes us more and more acquainted with Jesus and Mary as we meet them in the Gospels. The wonderful modern writer Romano Guardini endorsed it with these splendid words:

To recite the Rosary rightly demands practice, but once we are fully acquainted with it, it may become for us a quiet hidden land in which we may dwell and find peace, or a chapel whose doors are ever open and into which we can take the burdens of our souls.

1. Holding the crucifix, make the sign of the cross.

2. You may say an Our Father while holding the next bead and a Hail Mary while holding each of the next three in turn.

3. Holding the fourth bead up from the crucifix, announce the first mystery (see opposite), then say the Our Father.

4. Say ten Hail Marys, one on each bead, while meditating on the mystery.

5. Say the Glory Be. 6. Announce the second mystery, then say the Our Father. Repeat 4 and 5 and continue with the third, fourth and fifth mysteries in the same way.

7. Say the Hail Holy Queen. (See below.)

8. End with the sign of the cross.

YOUTH GROUP BARBECUE THIS SUNDAY!

The Youth Group is getting ready to start up again and we are planning a barbecue to do it! The barbecue will be THIS Sunday, October 15 by the Parish Life Center. MISSION TRIP Donna has reserved the week of June 24, 2017 for a Mission Trip to Kentucky. It will be a great opportunity to help bring Christ to others. —OCTOBER 21-22 Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in

Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are reminded by Pope Francis that Mission is at the Heart of Christian Faith. We are invited to “Chat with the Pope” to learn more about his missions. PUERTO RICO HURRICANE RELIEF

TODAY Today, Sister Josefina Morales, parishioner and facilitator of Saint Joseph’s Bereavement Ministry, will speak at all Masses about the devastation in her native Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria. Sister has been in contact with the people there and they describe the current situation as like being in the Third World. Most of the island’s inhabitants are without power. It may not be restored for a long time. Many stores were destroyed and those that are able to open have very limited stock. The demand for bottled water and batteries is greater that the supply. People wait on long lines for hours only to find that the stores have run out of the desperately needed items. Sister Josefina will be taking up a door collection today after all Masses to try to help meet some of the people’s urgent needs. The funds collected will be used to purchase essential supplies and the items will be sent directly to Fr. Hector de Jesus and Fr. Juan Santa at the Academia Perpetuo Socorro in San Juan to distribute. Your donations are much needed and will be greatly appreciated. If you are not prepared to donate today but would like to, you may make out your check to Saint Joseph Church and memo it Hurricane Puerto Rico Relief and drop it off or mail it to the parish office at 105 Harrison St., New Milford, NJ 07646. Saint Joseph Director of Facilities, Tom Meli, is pleased to announce the completion of a number of important parish projects that were funded by donations , both private and those made to the We Are Living Stones capital campaign

The interior of the church

was painted.

Entirely new, state-of- the-art

Sound System was

installed in in upper church.

Heating/Air Conditioning

system was installed

in the Harrison Street

entrance of the church

which was previously

without either.

Saint Joseph lower school

exterior was painted.

All old, rusted stained glass

window framing was replaced

with new aluminum framing ,

and all stained glass was

refurbished.

A new, much more efficient boiler *

was installed in the lower school

replacing the failing old system installed in 1957.

*The Archdiocese has notified us that we

will be reimbursed for this expense.

MORE PROJECTS IN PROGRESS Old, inefficient AC units in Mary’s Chapel are in the process of being replaced with energy-efficient Heating/Air Conditioning units. Painting of upper school hallways and stairwells will be completed. The intercom system in the lower school will be replaced. Minor renovations will be made to the Curry House.

ALL SOULS MASS —NOVEMBER 2

We will have a special Mass on Thursday, November 2 at 7:30 pm

for All Souls Day (the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed). At that Mass the names of all those who have had funerals at Saint Joseph Church this year will be read. St. Joseph Council #3814 of the Knights of Columbus will also be in attendance to remember their departed brothers and will honor all our deceased by the presence of the Fourth Degree Knights honor guard. You may include the name of your loved one who died this year (even if their funeral was not celebrated at Saint Joseph) if you call our Parish Office at 201-261-0148 by Friday, October 27.

Catholic Cemeteries annually sponsors A Concert in Honor of the Faithful Departed on Cemetery Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. This concert is intended to be a source of comfort for those mourning the loss of a loved one and will feature the musical works of Dvora k, Mozart, Durufle , Elgar, Barber, and Flummerfelt. The talented Cathedral Choir, organist Ian Tomesch, and conductor John J. Miller, Director of Music Ministries for the Archdiocese of Newark, will present the performance. A pre-concert lecture for the bereaved will be presented starting at 3:20pm on the topic “Using Music to Cope with Grief.” The Cathedral Choir will perform at 4:00 pm. A free-will offering will be received. No advance tickets are needed. The church gathers to pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and to console one another by strengthening our hope in the resurrection.

PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS October 15 is called “National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day.” On this day in many parts of the world, people will light a candle and offer prayers in memory of those lost babies, born and unborn. In solidarity let us join together and do the same here in our homes. If we light a candle and let it burn for at least one hour, there will be a continual wave of light across the world all day.

The Archdiocese of Newark will be providing a special day to honor and commemorate these children and comfort those who are grieving on February 17, 2018. May these children celebrate in heaven in the comfort of our Savior’s arms.

A special mass and a support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 12:00 noon. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly affected with the abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict.
