SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

WELCOME TO OUR NEW YOUTH MINISTER Ellen Solinas, our new Youth Minister, is a longtime parishioner of Saint Joseph. She sings alto in our Choir, is a member of Women’s Cornerstone, has worked in our Baptism ministry and was a catechist in our Religious Education program for nine years. Her husband David grew up in Oradell and has been a parishioner all his life. Ellen and David have four sons, Aidan, Brendan, David and Stephen (ages 14-22) who, like their dad, have also been blessed to receive all their sacraments at Saint Joseph. Ellen herself was born in Cork City, Ireland. (Her American mother from the Bronx met her Irish dad on a trip to Ireland.) The family (which includes both an older and younger sister) moved back and forth between Ireland and the Bronx several times while Ellen was growing up. When her older sister became engaged to an American with plans to live here, the family settled permanently in the U.S. Ellen attended Paramus Catholic High School and Bergen Community College. She has been a diagnostic medical sonographer for 30 years. She has also taught OB/GYN and abdominal ultrasound classes at BCC for 22 years.

CO-LEADER OF ASCPG YOUTH GROUP Besides having both teen and young adult sons of her own, Ellen has been very active for the past four years as a chaperone and co-leader of the youth group for ASCPG (American Special Children’s Pilgrimage Group). Ellen’s son Stephen had joined the group as a volunteer who accompanies groups of special needs youth on a pilgrimage/visit to Lourdes, France at Easter time each year. Stephen asked his mom to join them as a chaperone and she has loved

watching the young people and the pilgrims share their experiences and bond together on these trips. The young volunteers also attend and assist at monthly Mass for special needs individuals on the third Sunday of each month at 1:30 pm at St. Therese in

Cresskill. SAINT JOSEPH’S NEW “TEEN MASS” Upon the retirement of our previous youth minister, Ellen answered an ad in our bulletin for someone new to direct our Youth and Young Adult Ministry. She has visited youth groups throughout the Archdiocese and in New York City and has come to us with lots of wonderful ideas, including our first ever “Teen Mass”—celebrated on the first Sunday of each month at 6:30 pm in the upper church. With music and prayer designed to inspire our young people, the “Teen Mass” is open to anyone who would like to attend

Mass on a Sunday evening and be uplifted by the presence of our teens.

“Our Youth Group offers our teens an opportunity to grow together in faith and friendship. And when they leave to go to college they will have a strong founda-tion in the faith and know that Saint Joseph Church will always be their home.”

—Ellen Solinas

EVERYONE IN GRADES 9-12 ARE WELCOME Our Youth Group has begun meeting—on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm—to share both their faith and their interests. (If a member must leave early, that is no problem as long as they have a ride.) Members have already written supportive “love

letters” based on Bible quotes to members of the Military from our parish. Ellen has some wonderful plans for the group: she has been looking into a trip to the Franciscan Friars’ Catholic Underground in NYC, a week-long teen camp (with St. John’s, Bergenfield), hikes, a

Mario Kart tournament, a “Cardboard City” event to raise awareness about homelessness, a working trip to a Sustainable Fare farm and lots more. Anyone interested in joining the Saint Joseph Youth Group should contact Ellen at [email protected] Adult volunteers (over 21) interested in working with our teens are also invited to contact Ellen. Instructions on how to receive required “Protecting God’s Children” certification will be provided.

SXITH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 17, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS 2019 The Annual Appeal directly supports various ministries and programs throughout the Archdiocese of Newark, such as our evangelization efforts, Catholic education,

Catholic Charities, youth and young adult ministry, and many others. Your participation in this campaign is vitally important. If you have not yet made a pledge, there is still time. Just complete a pledge envelope (found at the doors of the church) and drop it in the collection basket or bring it to the parish office. If you have already made a pledge, thank you very much!

Before World War II, the southern German city of Ulm, on the Danube, was best known as the birthplace of Albert Einstein, for having a

church with the world’s tallest spire (525 feet) and for being the launch point for the failed 1811 attempt at flight of Albrecht Berblinger, the “Flying Tailor of Ulm,” who built a machine he hoped would take him to the skies but took him only into the river. In recent years it is most famous as the city where Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans grew up. They were the most memorable participants in a small group of students and professors who called themselves the White Rose Movement and were executed for protesting the evils brought on by the Nazis. Raised in a Lutheran home committed to high-minded values, they were enrolled at the University of Munich, whose chancellor was also an SS colonel accustomed to be addressed as “Your Magnificence.” There they and a small circle of friends, several of them Catholics, resolved to defy the Hitler regime, knowing that even criticizing it would cost them their lives. The Scholls had eagerly read some great authors, including a number of Catholic ones. After reading Socrates, Hans moved on to Scripture, the Church Fathers (especially Augustine), Thomas Aquinas, Pascal and Paul Claudel. Sophie admired Thornton Wilder’s The Bridge of San Luis Rey and Augustine’s Confessions. Both also read John Henry Newman and had been deeply influenced by the courageous sermons of Clemens von Galen, the Catholic Bishop of Mu nster, who had denounced the Nazis for their T4 program, which systematically murdered “useless” residents of hospitals for the handicapped. The White Rose members printed leaflets of protest, which they mailed to people in various areas of Germany they had randomly chosen from telephone directories, asking them to make as many copies as they could for further distribution. The first leaflet included an uncanny prophecy from a play by Goethe that was soon to come true for Hitler and Germany:

Though he who has boldly arisen from the abyss Through an iron will and cunning May conquer half the world, Yet to the abyss he must return. Already a terrible fear has seized him; In vain he will resist! And all who still stand with him Must perish in his fall.

Sophie Scholl released some of the later pamphlets (continued above)

from the third floor of a university building, letting them fall into the atrium below. A janitor who saw her held her and Hans, who had not abandoned his sister, until the arrival of the police, who turned them over to the Gestapo. Hans had a letter that implicated their friend

Christoph Probst and led to his arrest. The Nazi travesty of a legal system moved against them with swift violence, dealing with them in a matter of days under the notoriously fanatical Roland Freisler, who had been brought in from Berlin to judge their case. Their trial soon reached its predictable conclusion, a death sentence by guillotine for all three. Soon other White

Rose members were arrested and suffered the same fate. The Nazis, for some reason, were willing to treat Sophie leniently, but she would have none of it. As the distinguished literary critic Clive James wrote:

Throughout her interrogation, the Gestapo offered her a choice that they did not extend to her brother. They told her that if she recanted she would be allowed to live. She turned them down, and walked without a tremor to the blade. The chief executioner later testified that he had never seen anyone else die so bravely as Sophie Scholl. Not a whimper of fear, not a sigh of regret for the beautiful life she might have led. She just glanced up at the steel, put her head down, and she was gone. Is that you? No, and it isn’t me either.

Today there is a memorial and a museum dedicated to the Scholls at the University of Munich, and an institute on politics has been named in their honor. Marc Rothemund’s film Sophie Scholl—The Final Days (2005), which makes extensive use of Sophie’s trial transcripts, has won international acclaim. Hundreds of German schools, streets and public squares are now named after Hans and Sophie. This Friday, February 22, is the 75th anniversary of their executions.

CELEBRATING A SPECIAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARY?

The Archdiocese would like to honor those couples who celebrate five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2019. These anniversary liturgies will take place in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on the follow-ing dates: APRIL 28, 2019 at 3:00 pm (50 years) JUNE 2, 2019 at 3:00 pm (25 years and 5 years) We extend our warmest congratulations to those who are celebrating one of these special anniversaries and hope you will be able to attend the liturgy. Please be sure to notify our parish secretary Gerry Carolan no later than April 15 so we can send your

INVITATION FOR THE ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS (AND THE IMMACULATE

HEART OF MARY) IN YOUR HOME

Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a movement to save and restore Christ to the family and the

family to Christ. It has been created to establish Christ in society through the family and to enkindle love of God in order to light the world. The love of the Lord is all around us. God’s love is everlasting, visible yet invisible as the air. Every day we are recipients of His powerful love. We have so much to be thankful for. So also we must sincerely repent for our sins. God is waiting for us. It is important to have a priest preside over the ceremony, however for serious reasons, the head of the family could lead the prayers. When a priest is not present, please have the image/s blessed before the Enthronement.

Obtain a picture of the Sacred Heart (and the Immaculate Heart of Mary).

Prepare a place for the image in your home and the place where the Ceremony will take place.

Have three days of private prayer. The individual or family should go to Confession,

attend Mass and receive Holy Communion before the ceremony

A short ceremony presided by a priest or head of the family is conducted. The priest may also bless the home at this time.

TO SCHEDULE YOUR ENTHRONEMENT

Please call the parish office at 201-261-0148 or email [email protected] to schedule the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart and to receive the preparatory Enthronement booklet— cost: $3.15. To find an image of the Sacred Heart/Immaculate Heart you can go to The Religious Shoppe, 220 Boulevard, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ 07604 or search online. There are several sites that sell Catholic articles.

If you have any questions, please email Laura Villena at [email protected]

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Blessed are you when people hate you,...exclude and insult you, and denounce your name...on account of the Son of Man.” (Luke 6:22) All of us have been in situations when someone has made a negative comment or joke about God or our Catholic faith. How did you respond? Did you stay si-lent or pretend to go along with the crowd because you didn’t want to cause waves and then, later, you felt bad? Know that God is with you all the time, the Holy Spirit will put the right words in your mouth. Pray for the strength and courage to proclaim our faith to others, especially during uncomfortable situations.
