The Trinity is, after all, not a triangle of Persons distinctly defined. Nor is it a series of masks God wears ascircumstanceswarrant.ThefirstidealeavesyouwithahereticalsetofthreeGods.ThesecondqualifiesyouasaUnitarian.I’vebeenguiltyofbotherrorsalongtheway,as Isuspectmostofusare.PreservingthepeculiararithmeticofTrinity, inwhichThree-Equals-OneandOneissomehowknowninThree,isatheologicaldancethattripsupthemany. ParsingtheTrinityisnotwhywecelebratethisfeast.Firstofall, it’simpossible.Second,thehomilyisnotatheologylesson.Thirdofall,wedon’tneedatrinityofreasonsnottoboreourpeoplesilly.TheworstthingwecancommunicateabouttheTrinity,perhaps,istopersuadeothers—andourselves—thatweDOunderstandthenatureofGodquiteperfectly.IfeareverypreacherwhointendstogetupthisSundayanddojustthat. Godismystery.EverylessononGodproperlybeginsandendsthere.ThisiswhyAbramreceivesonlyamysticalvisionof flame(Gen.15),andMosesmerelygetsaglimpseoftheDivineasGodpassesby(Exod.33).EventhedisciplesattheTransfigurationseenomorethananoverbearingbrightness.Allofus,astheNewTestamentwritersinsist,arelumpedintothecategoryofthosewhocannotendurethesightofGod’sface(John1:18;1John4;1Tim.6:16).Godissimplytoomuchforus.Toomuchtruth.Toomuchbeauty.Toomuchgoodness.Toomuchlife!Foruswholivesopartially,therealizationoflifeenoughtoburstopenthegraveandthegatesofhellwouldbealottotakein. BREAKINGBREADWITHANGELS “Lo, theangel’s food isgiven!”Sowesing in today’s special sequence.On this feastofChrist’sBodyandBlood,werecapturethewonderofwhathasbecomecommonplace forsomanyofus: thereality that theKingdombanquet issetbeforeus,andwe’reinvitedtocomeforwardtothistable.IfyouwanttoknowhowthecosmicKingdomJesustalksaboutintersectswithourdailycitizenshipinthisworld,it’srighthere.Thetableatthecenterofourworshipisalsothetableatthecenterofeveryangel’sattention.Let’sbreakbreadwithangelstoday! Saint Paul tells us something rather wonderful, powerful really, in his careful use of the word “participation.” Ourblessingcup,ourbrokenbread,isa“participation”inthelifeofChrist.AllthatJesusdid—inhisteachingandhealing,inhissuffering,dying,andrising—issomethingwetootakepartin,haveapartof.ButtheLatinrootofparticipate,capere,alsomeanstoliftoreventoheave!Whoisdoingtheliftinghere,whotheheaving?We’retounderstandthat,bysharinginthismeal,we’reelevatedintoChrist-life.Ican’tspeakforyou,butthat’saveritableheaveforme! Solet’ssaythelifeofChristbecomessacramentallyavailabletoearth,tous,inourEucharist.Christcomes“down”onthesegiftsofbreadandwine,aswesayinourliturgy—thedirectionistraditional,perhapsnotgeographicallyaccuratebuthelpfulforfolkswhoresideinspatialdimensions.Asweparticipateinthissacrament,wearethenlifteduptoshareinahigherkindoflifeadventure.“Higher,”again,asthetraditionaltheologicalcompasspointstowardtheheavenlyrealm.Butwemight alsouse theworddeeper.Or grander.Or fuller.Or richer. Somanyways to considerhowour life in Christ is“more”thanalifethatparticipatesonlyinthelocaleconomyofmaterialthingsandpedestrianassociations! We eat this bread, and are consumed by it. The grace of heaven falls onmere bread, and elevates it—and us—toparticipation in amystery ofmore-ness.We’re not on this earth like the rest of the animals, snuffling out our creaturecomforts.We’renotprouddominatorsof theplaneteither,heretograbour fairshare.We’renotdemigodssetonself-actualization at any cost. We’re privileged bearers of divine likeness, commissioned to orchestrate the common good.We’rehere,plainly,toliftothersup,sometimeswithaheave-howhentheworld’sinjusticehaspressedthemfarbelowthenorm.Ifwe’regoingtodinewithangelsonthebreadofheaven,we’vealsocommittingourselvestosustainthelivesanddignityofthoseonearth.“Onearthasinheaven.”Didn’twehearthatsomewhere? –AliceCamille
