Luke12:49-53 Jesusfeelstheagonyofwaiting forthehourheknowsisabouttoarrive.SUCCESS=LOYALTY,NOTRESULTS Some folksdissolve inacrisisandarenogood toanyone, leastofall themselves.Butothers shine in thecriticalhour.Theycarrypianosoutofburningbuildingsandlifttrucksofftrappedchildren.Later,perhaps,thesesameheroescomeungluedandsoblikebabies.Doesn'tmatter.Letthemgetitout,theypaidtheirdues! Jeremiahisprophecy'santi-hero, inaway. Ineachcrucialhour,hewhinesandcomplains, losesheartandfocus.He'sfirsttoaccuseGodwhenthingsaren'tgoingwell.Asprophetsgo,Jeremiah'snottheposterchildforconfidenceinGod'spromiseofrescue.Yethe'sapersistentandlong-livedservantofGod.Jeremiahreceiveshiscall before the age of 20—the age of conscription into Israel's armies—which is why he informs Godimmediatelythathe's"tooyoung"tobecalledupforduty.Nonetheless,hebeginshistruth-tellingtothekingwellbeforeBabylon'sfinalassaultonJerusalem,andkeepsonprophesyingthroughthenation'sexile,upuntilhe'skidnappedbyhiscountrymen,hauledofftoEgypt,andeventuallymurdered. Thisloyalty-in-imperfectionexplainspartoftheattractionwefeeltothisfellow:Jeremiah'snotaparagonofgraceandcourage,yetGodchooseshim,useshim,andhegets the jobdoneall thesame.Despiteamarkedtendency toward lamentation, Jeremiahnever shirkshisdutynor tamperswith thegivenmessage tomake itmorepalatableandpopular.LikeMoses,Amos,andIsaiahbeforehim,Jeremiahdidn'tparticularlywantthisjob.A priest's son, he may have been looking forward to a routine life of ritual and sacrifice. Once summoned,however,hethrowshimselfintotheassignment,evenwhenitwindshimupinthemuddypit. This iswhy Jeremiah is consideredabiblical "type"of Jesus:much like the suffering servant Isaiahwritesaboutsoeloquently.Jesustoowouldappreciatethathismissionwasn'ttosucceedinpersuadinghisgenerationtorepentance,togeteveryonetoseethingshisway.Peaceonearthwouldn'tarriveatthecloseoftheSermonontheMount.Instead,theministryofJesuscreatesasimilarturmoiltoJeremiah'smostunwelcomewords.ThemoreJesustellsthetruth,thecloserhegetstobeingcrucified. Households continue to be divided by the gospel today. Parentsmay commit themselves,while childrenwander.Onespouseembracestheway,theotherisskeptical.Thehouseholdofchurchitselfisacornucopiaofpassionateavowal, simplesincerity,hesitationanddoubt,andhalf-heartedmembership.We'renotallonthesamepage.Inthematteroffaithaboveallothers,freewillremainsparamount.Thefireisblazing.Notallwillchoosetobekindledbyit. —AliceCamille

Thetotalamountofthe2016SGG’sAppealis$1,944,100.Thisrepresentsa1.4%increaseoverthepreviousyear,reflecting the impact of inflation. Our parish share of the 2016 Appeal is based on our parish’s 2014 Offertorycollection.Thus,ourParish’sappealtargetfor2016is$50,670.AsoftheendofJuly,$7,485.00hasbeenreceivedthroughtheparishofficewhichrepresents14.77%ofourparishappealtargetfor2016.Soslowlybutsurelywearemakingsomeprogress.
