FEAST OF FAITH Only Say the Word

The bread is broken, the banquet is prepared, and now we are invited to the feast. Once more the priest holds the host, now broken, for us to see, and invites us to behold the one “who takes away the sins of the world.” Truly blessed and happy are those invited to this meal, which is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, the supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:19). We re-spond to this invitation with a prayer to the Lord: we acknowledge that we are not worthy, but at the same time we are confident that the One who comes to us can heal us, body and soul. This prayer echoes the story of the centurion in Luke’s Gospel. The centurion, a Gentile, asks healing for his servant, but does not consider himself worthy to have Jesus come under his roof—he believes that Jesus can heal his servant with a word, without even seeing him. Jesus is amazed at his faith. It is the same for us. We believe that Jesus speaks to us, comes to us, dwells with us, even though we neither hear his voice nor see his face. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

STOLEN Westminster Abbey was stolen? As is the case with all ancient English churches, monasteries, or convents presently in the hands of the Anglicans, the famed Abbey where English mon-archs are crowned and buried, was once the property of a Cath-olic institution. Westminster Abbey was a Benedictine monas-tery. While the Catholic origin of the Abbey may be well known, especially in England, many people are unaware who the Abbey’s heavenly patron is. The Abbey dates back at least to the eighth century, but possibly before. During the time of King St. Edward the Confessor (1003-1066), it had already been in existence as a Benedictine Monastery for about 200 years. During an exile in Normandy, King Edward made a vow that he would go on a pilgrimage to Rome, to the tomb of St. Peter. Being unable to keep this vow, for reasons of state, he requested the Pope to absolve him of it. Pope Leo IX commut-ed the vow, but under certain conditions, one of them being that Edward build or restore, in England, an abbey in honor of St. Peter. This he did by rebuilding the Abbey at Westminster. The relics of the Sainted King are still enshrined at the Abbey, where they are in the company of the earthly remains of many other English Monarchs, some Catholic, and some Protestant.

ALL SOULS DAY St. John’s Parish Family will celebrate a Mass of

Remembrance on All Souls Day, Tuesday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. for all who have gone to the Lord during this past year. It is a time to reflect and remember those in our lives who have died and honor them at this time. All are invited.

Thank you!!!

Thank you to all who made last Sunday’s Mass and Social so memorable. Special thanks to the committee who set up, served, cleaned up, shopped and worked so hard to make this such a special celebration.

~ DEATH ~ WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT.

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.” Very quietly, the doctor said, “I don't know.' 'You don't know? You're a Christian man, and don't know what's on the other side?” The doctor was holding the handle of the door. On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of glad-ness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing... I know my Mas-ter is there and that is enough.”

Stewardship Reflection “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to

serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (M 10:45)

If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others. Pray daily to become less self-centered and to become more God-centered.

THE DIFFERENCE Fifty, seventy-five, a hundred years from now, it will make no difference what kind of house I lived in, which stocks I owned, how large a bank account I accumulat-ed, the model car I drove, the education I received, or the titles I held. What may make a difference is how I influenced children to be concerned, respectful, loving citizens of the nation, world, and Church.

BOAT A man wanted a boat more than anything. His wife kept saying no, but he bought one anyway. "I'll tell you what," he told her. "In the spirit of compromise, why don't you name the boat?" Being a good sport, she accepted. When her husband went to the dock for the boat's maiden voyage, he saw painted on the side, "For Sale".

SPIRITUAL EXCERPT

“The only way to get to the Father's heart is to admit who you are, to know your weaknesses and your faults. This is where we fall short. Jesus died that you might live forever. Do you know anyone you would be willing to die for? Do you know anyone at all you would be willing to give your blood for? That's a lot of love. All He's asking in return is repentance for your sins and acknowledgment of your faults. That's a pretty good deal.” Mother Angelica

When Jesus is all we have,

we realize Jesus is all we need.

JUST A REMINDER The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.
