Alonso Manso is the first Christian Bishop to come to the Americas in 1512. His remains rest in the San Juan Bautista Cathedral. The fortified city of Old San Juan contains one of the major concentration of temples per square miles worldwide. Some of them are UNESCO World Heritages. The Church provided the first expressions of art, architecture, culture, education, and faith in Puerto Rico. Old San Juan celebrates the world’s longest Christmas season. For almost five centuries, Old San Juan has been a pilgrimage destination. The San Juan Bautista Cathedral houses the Altar of Our Lady of Providence which is the Patron Virgin of Puerto Rico, and also where the Patriotic Altar, and the remains of Juan Ponce de León (Conqueror of Florida rests).
