Solemn Mass for All Saints’ Day In just over a week the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day. Since it falls on a Monday this is not a holy day of obligation this year. However, Mass will be offered in each parish to celebrate this important feast day of the Church. See the bulletin for times and locations. One of the Masses that will be offered for All Saints’ Day is a Solemn Mass at St. Pius X in Glencoe at 6:30 p.m. This will be a truly beautiful Mass for the glory of God, the honor of the saints, and for the edification and sanctification of those who participate. It will be celebrated in the form of the Mass promulgated after Vatican II with which we are all familiar. However, the Mass will be celebrated in Latin (see the August 29 and September 5 bulletins on this topic) with the Liturgy of the Word (i.e. readings, responses, and homily) in English. We will also sing hymns in English along with the propers in Latin. We will be blessed to have seminarians from the seminaries in St. Paul to lead the music along with our own Fr. John Hayes. A program for the Mass will include the Latin responses and translations of Latin texts into English. Another unique feature of this Mass is that we will celebrate it at the high altar. Many do not realize that this is still an option in the current form of the Mass. This is often described as Mass celebrated by the priest “with his back to the people.” However, this does not describe the true meaning of this orientation. A better way to refer to it is Mass celebrated ad orientem, or toward the east. In the first centuries of the Church, Christians often prayed in the direction of the east toward the rising sun. This represents the Son who will come again in glory at the end of time. Since it is not always possible to build churches oriented to the east, the idea of “liturgical east” arose. This means that at certain points of the Mass, especially during the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest faces towards a representation of Christ such as an image of Christ in glory or a crucifix, and/or the Real Presence of Christ in the tabernacle. The idea is not that the priest does not want to look at the people. Rather it is that at those points of the Mass when the priest is addressing God, he faces God. Moreover, the priest is facing in the same direction as the people so as to represent that he is not praying to or at the people, but is leading them in prayer in the person of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit to God the Father. Together priest and people turn toward the Lord and offer Him prayer, praise, worship, and adoration. We purposely chose to offer this form of solemn Mass at a time that is not obligatory. The purpose is not to cause a stir or make people fearful about what future Masses in the AFC will be like. The idea is simply to offer this form of the Mass to give people a wider experience of the Church’s liturgy and to give those are interested a chance to experience and participate in it. No one has to come. However, I certainly encourage you to do so if you are able. You might appreciate it more than you think. My experience has been that many do. It’s going to be very beautiful! Solemn Mass for All Saints’ Day
In just over a week the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day. Since it falls on
a Monday this is not a holy day of obligation this year. However, Mass will be offered in each parish to
celebrate this important feast day of the Church. See the bulletin for times and locations.
One of the Masses that will be offered for All Saints’ Day is a Solemn Mass at St. Pius X in Glencoe at
6:30 p.m. This will be a truly beautiful Mass for the glory of God, the honor of the saints, and for the
edification and sanctification of those who participate. It will be celebrated in the form of the Mass
promulgated after Vatican II with which we are all familiar. However, the Mass will be celebrated in
Latin (see the August 29 and September 5 bulletins on this topic) with the Liturgy of the Word (i.e.

in Latin. We will be blessed to have seminarians from the seminaries in St. Paul to lead the music along
with our own Fr. John Hayes. A program for the Mass will include the Latin responses and translations
