Often there are people who want to talk to me, set appointments or get information about things, but after that is taken care of, Elvia, our director of Hispanic ministry, her family and some of the people from the choir are still around, and we will sit in my office for a while and talk. We will talk about how Mass went, whether the homily was mediocre or passable, what our plans are for the day, or just about what is going on in our lives. These relaxed visits are a simple treasure. We do not have religious education classes to worry about, and I usually do not take appointments with marriage couples until 2:30 p.m. We accomplish nothing particularly important or pressing, but once September comes and we no longer have this luxury, I will dearly miss these Sunday afternoon get togethers. I have learned to treasure these short breaks, but I also know that my ministry to the people God has sent me to work among will always be a priority in my life. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples return from their missionary journeys filled with stories, joys and wonder. They are also tired out from the journey and exhausted from all that has happened since they last were with the Lord. Jesus gives them his full attention and cares for their needs. He seems anxious to hear their stories and to rejoice in their successes. There are many people surrounding them, and these crowds are so insistent that there is not even time to eat. Jesus tries to pull away from the demands of the crowds by going to a deserted place, but the crowds just follow them. He and his disciples then try to escape by climbing into a boat and crossing the lake, but the crowd’s desire to be with Jesus foils their plans. They arrive at the landing before the Lord. He looks at this vast crowd of demands, needs, hopes and dreams and takes pity on them. He abandons his plans for rest and retreat, and begins to patiently and joyously teach them. Jesus and his disciples are called out of their own desire for rest into the joy of leading God’s people to salvation. Like a good shepherd, Jesus’ finds his energy, joy and satisfaction in attending to the needs of his flock. Our lives have many demands. We are sometimes pulled in so many directions that we can be overwhelmed and irritable. In the end, like Jesus, we need time to rejoice in our accomplishments and to rest from our labors, but also like Jesus, our own needs and desires must be balanced with God’s call to give ourselves in love to others. The rest we desire is a gift from God, and even our own limitations can help us to depend on his energy, his power and his joy to bring the Good News of salvation to those longing to receive it. Fr. Come Away and We Will Rest, Maybe One of the simplest and most satisfying joys of the summer comes after the Mass in Spanish. Often there are people who want to talk to me, set appointments or get information about things,

but after that is taken care of, Elvia, our director of Hispanic ministry, her family and some of the people from the choir are still around, and we will sit in my office for a while and talk. We accomplish nothing particularly important or pressing, but once September comes

and we no longer have this luxury, I will dearly miss these Sunday afternoon get togethers.

THE RE CONNECTION: Perhaps you become alarmed, too, when you hear stories of area businesses that traditionally offer opportunities of employment to teens, who are now struggling to maintain operating hours due to a lack of workers and employees who are willing to even show up for their shifts. This author refuses to simply lament the lack of responsibility and excoriate the seeming sense of entitlement that has crept into society. We need answers to why this is happening and to how it can be rectified. Not to say that our parish kiddos are any different than the rest of the kiddos out there, but rest assured that the youth in this parish, by spending time within our Hallowed Halls, will engage in the very heart of responsibility in terms of what it means to be a child of God, and the expectations upon them to live as such. We are blessed with Catechists who are willing to sacrifice to assist parents in reinforcing the importance of learning the Truths of life as revealed in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, and who go to great lengths to demonstrate the crucial realities of the duties of us Christians as taught by the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. We all want what is best for the next generation, so as a parish let us continue to do our best to challenge our youth to live up to who the Almighty called them to be. On behalf of our Religious Education Program, thank you, fellow parishioners, for your resolve in leading the Christian life. May your example ever inspire our kiddos to rise up among their peers and help lead them to lives of true fulfillment and service to their neighbors.

PICK UP YOUR PANS AND BOWLS: There are still items from recent funerals in the gathering area of the church. Please check if you are missing bowls or pans.

HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT FORMED YET? The Area Faith Community has a pretty amazing resource for us to use as parents for FREE! It is like Amazon Prime but for zero cost. I am not sure about you but I love a good deal. I logged on to FORMED to see what it was all about, mainly because Father Tony said that it was a great thing and I wanted to see if he was right. It is amazing the things that you can find on there that you might be interested in and believe me there is going to be something that you’re going to be interested in. I love that there are kid’s movies and mini TV-type series that teach kids good values and morals like Brother Francis. Brother Francis is a series of movies that talk about The Mass, Celebrating the Eucharist and one all about different songs. Do you want to more about your faith? FORMED has tons, literally, of materials about our faith. I love to read but don’t always get the time to so audio books are a great way to catch up on all of my “reading.” It is really an easy way to learn more about your faith or learn about those complicated things that are affecting our world today and how deal with them. I love this resource and I know you would too. So try it out. The FORMED website is https://formed.org/ when you logon you go to register and use this parish code RJHGCW.
