Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida
Stewards are disciples of Jesus Christ, walking His Way, His Truth and following His path in this Life as we journey toward our eternal destination. Disciples bear the six characteristics that identify an “Everyday Steward” – mindfulness, prayerfulness, gratefulness, graciousness, committed and accountable. This identification exhibits a “way of life”, a way of life lived 24/7. It is a lifestyle that must be embraced, yet cannot be developed overnight. Stewards must pick up their cross daily and follow in Jesus’ footsteps according to the Father’s Will, just as Jesus did. That this call might be fulfilled, Stewards must be committed. “The way of the cross is unavoidably uphill. Christians don’t get to carry their cross downhill.” 1 A committed Steward perseveres daily in a way of life that acknowledges EVERYTHING belongs to God. We care for and tend to all things God provides, whether it be our time – how we use it, our talent – how we share it, or our money – how we spend it. ALL belongs to God. He trusts our good judgment to lovingly care for everything He chooses to give us, no matter how large or how small. “There is no closer bond than the one which gratefulness celebrates, the bond between giver and thanksgiver. Everything is a gift.”2 God also believes we will wisely seek His counsel, if in doubt about the choices He calls us to make. He desires we seek Him in prayer, asking whatever we feel we need to make our wise choices. There are days where our cross may be easy for us to carry as we journey. There are other days when our cross is heavy and we need help lifting and moving forward with it. A committed Steward will not give up, will not despair. This Steward will seek the Lord’s strength, His wisdom and guidance when the burden of life becomes too heavy. He will persevere. “What a wonderful habit it is to make the Sign of the Cross, to bring Christ to our minds and to our hearts as we carry the crosses of life on our shoulders.”3 May your Stewardship legacy of commitment remain strong when the path of life becomes rutted and its borders give way to slippery footing.
About 20 years ago some of the “Lost Boys” found refuge in Salt Lake City. “Lost Boys” came out of the genocidal Second Sudanese Civil War (1987-2005) where about 2,000,000 people died. Some of those who died were family members of children who
themselves managed to hide from oncoming fighters or who were away from their villages attending to their family’s cattle during the attacks. After realizing that their families were dead, these children banded together trying to make it to refugee camps in Ethiopia or Kenya. These journeys could take weeks or years and on the way illness, lack of food, hostile fighters, and wild animals took their toll. Many bands of children found their way by trial and error; the lands through which they passed not having much in the way of roads or clear directions. Once they reached the refugee camps, these children were sent to other nations to begin life anew. Many of the “Lost Boys” arrived in Salt Lake as young men. Eventually returned to Sudan between wars, brought back wives, and began families of their own. They worked hard and were good providers. But more than one of them noted that all they did was work. They were pleased and grateful to be in a stable, peaceful place with opportunities, but there was a cost. Their life here was not the life they once knew in their villages back home. Everyone here was busy and it was harder to “just be.” “Just being” in some societies is suspiciously close to loafing. Unfortunately, “just being” is also part of prayer, at least when viewed from the outside. This is one thing prayer has to overcome. Prayer also has to overcome the draw of efficiency. Prayer involves a lot of repetition and the results are uneven. Working hard and being efficient are important parts of what makes our part of the world a relatively stable and peaceful place having more opportunities than other parts of the world. As valuable and necessary as these things are, it sometimes takes people who were desperately short of them to testify to what we have suspected when battling to find time and effort to pray: that life where hard work and efficiency do not dominate is conceivable and in its way fulfilling. “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”. These words from this weekend’s second reading reinforce a tendency to question the primacy of working long hours and seeking more efficiencies even while admitting their importance. The inefficiencies and aimlessness of prayer have long-term rewards.

• Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?
• Has expressed an interest in knowing more about Christianity?
• Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?
We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Sessions begin on September 14, 2020. CCD Teachers Needed for 2020-2021
Saint George Parish needs CCD teachers for the coming school year, September through May. We have several grade openings.
Becoming a CCD teacher (catechist) is an excellent way to deepen your own faith. The resources and materials you receive will refresh and expand your knowledge. You don’t have to be an expert in Catholicism or a gifted teacher; you just need a basic knowledge of the teachings of the Church and a desire to share your faith and inspire the children of the parish. It is a joy to pass on the Church’s truths to our children so that they might live in union with God.
