FROM FATHER CARLOS
Dear friends at Saint Mary’s and Saint Frances Cabrini parishes, This month of July we celebrated the feast day of our Lady of Mount Carmel. In the opening prayer for Mass on July 16th (the actual feast day of our Lady of Mount Carmel,) we asked the Lord that through the intercession of our Blessed Mother,
“we may be able to reach the mountain which is Christ.” For this bulletin column, therefore, I would like to reflect on the idea of Christ as the mountain, following the imagery offered by the opening prayer I just mentioned above. As I have also mentioned in the past, mountains are part of the geography of my home state in Colombia. They surround my hometown called Sabaneta (which means “little valley”.) Being familiar with mountains growing up, I have learned that they are hard to climb and that it takes much effort and perseverance to reach the top. In the Gospel, Christ shares with his disciples what it will take to follow him: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24) and elsewhere he says: “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62.) The mountain which is Christ is also demanding to climb and will very likely require effort and perseverance on our part to follow the “narrow path” (Matthew 7:14) that the Lord presents to us to reach the top. Our savior, however, assures us of his presence with us till the end (Matthew 28:20,) assisting us with his grace to fulfill what he commands.
Going back to the imagery of mountains, they also help us rise above the clouds. For some mountains it is the case that, as you go up and begin to near the top, the path starts becoming cloudy and foggy. All of that gloom, however, is left behind once you reach the top of the mountain. In the case of the Christian life, it is through the mountain which is Christ that we are able to rise above the clouds of sin and darkness and thus enjoy the true light that conquers death and dispels every evil. Lastly, mountains bring us closer to heaven. In Scripture, the top of a mountain is referenced as the closest place to God on earth. Often times in Scripture we find passages where God encounters others on the top of a mountain, as he did with Moses when he received the ten commandments from the Lord (see Exodus 19:20) Christ, the mountain, also brought us closer to heaven by restoring our relationship with the Father and opening wide the gates of paradise for his faithful ones through his sacrifice on the cross. As Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity would say about Christ: “He is my heaven!” My invitation these days, brothers and sisters, is that we engage in the adventure of climbing the mountain which is Christ. It does take effort and perseverance, yet it will lead us to reach heights that as Christians we are called to attain and that we are reminded of every time the priest invites us at Mass to “lift up [our] hearts.” May the Lord assists us with his grace.
