ST. MONICA came into the world in the year 333. As soon as she was old enough she was married to Patricius, a pagan citizen of Tagaste. Although Patricius was a man of high temper, she bore all trials with great patience. Her example and gentle conduct exercised such an influence over him that he was finally converted to Christianity. He died the year after his baptism.
The great cross of her life was the conduct of her son, Augustine, who was seventeen years of age when his father died in 371. His mother prayed long and fervently for his conversion. When he left her in Africa to go to Italy, she followed him and found him at Milan, where the words of St. Ambrose had already convinced him of the false hood of Manichean doctrines, which he aban-doned without being entirely converted.
In August, 386, St. Monica had the long-coveted happiness of seeing her son return to God. He was baptized by St. Ambrose on Easter eve the following year and soon after, with his mother and some friends, he set out for Africa. But St. Monica’s work was done; her son was converted; the sinner had become a Saint. She fell sick on the road and died at Ostia, from where they were to embark, in 387.
PRAYER God, Comforter of the afflicted, You accepted St. Monica’s tears to bring about the conversion of her son St. Augustine. Through their intercession, grant that we may have contrition for our sins and experience the grace of Your pardon. Amen.

ST. MONICA, Widow
August 27—Patroness of Mothers and Widows
My Dear Parishioners,
This is the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time as we celebrate the Lord’s Day. Today we conclude our reading of John’s Gospel,
chapter 6, “The Bread of Life Discourse.” Throughout all of chapter 6 we find the foundation of the Church’s theology on the
Holy Eucharist. As the Lord concludes His teaching we see that His opponents reject Him. As a result of this rejection they
walk away, they want nothing further to do with Jesus. The Lord then asks the Apostles, “Do you also want to leave?” The
Apostle Peter, spokesman for the Apostolic College responds, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal
life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”
The rejection of the Lord’s true presence in the Eucharist was present at the very beginning and is still among us today. Not
only is it rejected by Protestant Christians but it is also debated among some Catholics as recent surveys have indicated. These
past 5 weeks the “Bread of Life Discourse” has been the centerpiece of the Liturgy of the Word for Holy Mass. This has been
a graced time for us to once again reaffirm our Catholic and Orthodox faith in the real presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist. Our Lord calls us to faith, not to rejection.
The bringing about of the Eucharist comes as a result of the power of the Holy Spirit along with the words and actions of the
priest during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These past days have been very troubling for us as Catholics, both laity and
clergy. The terrible reports regarding sexual abuse by clergy are both disturbing and shameful. As a result some have opted to
reject the Church, to leave or take a non participatory attitude in Church life. Although our upset is valid, rejection of Christ’s
Church is not what faith-filled disciples do. We do not walk away from Christ but repeat the words of the Apostle Peter,
“Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you
are the Holy One of God.” As we all struggle through this time I have included in today’s bulletin some information we have received from our Bishop
and the New Jersey Catholic Conference which addresses the Pennsylvania Grand jury Report and steps which are being un-
dertaken to root out the satanic forces which have always tried to destroy the Church. We recall the words of our Blessed Lord
to Saint Peter, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail
against it.” (Mt. 16:18) Let us pray for the victims who continue to suffer. Let us pray for our priests that they will be holy
examples for us.
Next weekend we welcome Father Boban Kollappalli, a missionary priest of the Missionaries of Compassion who will speak
to us of his order’s apostolic work throughout the world.
God bless you my good people!
