Stewardship Reflection: Spending Time
Stewardship of time is one of the three interlinked dimensions of our call to steward-
ship. Just as with our financial resources, we talk about spending time,
saving time, and wasting time. But how well do we steward our time, or use it in a way that
reflects our gratitude to God for every hour of every day?
According to the latest government survey, the average America spends about 5 hours
of “spare” time each day in these activities: 2.8 hours watching TV, 38 min. socializing and
communicating, 20 min. reading, 20 min. using the computer for fun, 17 min. participating in
sports, exercise, active recreation, 16 min. relaxing, 20 min. on “other” activities. ( Source:
Bureau of Labor Statistics)
How do you use your leisure time? Where do your priorities lie? How much time do
you give back to God- in prayer, study, volunteering in the Parish?
“ Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” ( Psalm 90:12)
Dear Parishioners,
Thanksgiving Day is probably the most intimate family day of the year, next to
Christmas, of course. It is a day full of traditions and customs. There is the parade,
the turkey, the special desserts and the football games. It is a time to rest and enjoy
one’s family and loved ones. It is also a time to give thanks. Those Pilgrims who
came to this land wanted to thank their God for bringing them through a dangerous
cross of the Atlantic passage and a tough first winter. They recognized that all we
have comes from God and they wanted to acknowledge this.
We too need to acknowledge our dependence on our loving God who has
provided us such a graced place in which to live. We often fail to recognize how
fortunate we are to live in prosperity and with freedom to live our lives as we wish.
Let us take this opportunity to give thanks and to acknowledge the blessings we
have.
As I wanted to give both parishes an opportunity to give thanks with a Mass and
since both parishes have had these Masses at 9:00 am, I have asked Father O’Hara
to say the Mass at St. Catherine and I will be at St. Francis. If I don’t have an
opportunity to see you all in person, I pray that all of you and your families have a
blessed and holy and enjoyable Thanksgiving Day.
Father Plante
Thanksgiving Day Meal Prayer
God, who gives us all good gifts and who is the source of every blessing we have, hear our prayer as we gather to
give thanks for all that you have set before us.
We are grateful not only for the food that graces our table in such abundance, but also for the bond of family and friends, strengthened by the meal we share, and by the warmth of your love that comes to us each day through
your benevolent mercy.
Help us to use wisely all the gracious gifts you have showered upon us for the benefit of ourselves, our family,
and our nation.
On this Thanksgiving Day may we acknowledge that every good thing comes to us from you, and may your bounty
never cease, so that we may share your blessings with those in need.
Amen.
Happy Thanksgiving!
