FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE DESK OF FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR…

If you say so, I will pay out the nets….

Today’s gospel presents to us a lesson

regarding the way we see the world and the way God sees the same reality. The vision that we may have of this world could change the way we do things. Sometimes it impedes us to do more, even having the certainty that we are cor-rect. It is precisely in those moments that the divine wisdom shows us a new reality that if left alone to our human condition we are not able to see or understand.

Peter sees his work completed and with-out any possibility to change. He had worked all night, and nothing had happened. But there is something else in Peter, he expresses his vision of the events on matters which he is a special-ist. No one knows more than him about fishing. Sometimes it happens that we also are experts in the things we see, and we are judged correct-ly regarding them. But the difference is that Pe-ter is open to something new, even without un-derstanding the possibility, just because Jesus is saying for him to do it.

In our life, we should of course have the knowledge and understanding of the things we are familiar with. But also it is necessary to ac-cept that there are things that we are not able to comprehend, that only our faith and trust in the Lord gives us access. And when we do it, we become amazed by the miracle worked by the Lord.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Isn’t it nice to be called by name… especially by Jesus. The Gospel describes how Peter (still Simon at this point) responds to Jesus’ invitation. Peter is such a rich and complicated person, much like you and me. In the largest sense we are all Jesus’ followers, sharing belief in him as God’s anointed one. The reading invites us to “put on our bifocals” and see beyond the events being recounted. Peter already knew Jesus and was willing to do what he asked … even though he had to explain his unproductive night of fishing. Hmmm… does that sound familiar? Haven’t we relied on our own experience and knowledge when invited by Jesus to follow him? It isn’t easy to enter our spiritual selves when asked to live as Jesus’ disciples; we live in the real world and loving one another is fine when we’re in church surrounded by others who share our faith, out in the world… love isn’t as easy. What Jesus asks of us is to “put out our nets for a catch.” One commentator mentions that the symbolism of the catch isn’t just the actual successful catch, it’s the act of freeing what has been “caught” from the struggles from which they need release. In other words, all of us find ourselves “at sea” at times, lost in troubles or events that challenge us. We can become our own “fishermen” by turning consciously to Jesus, asking for his rescuing love. The success that Jesus enabled Peter and his companions to enjoy was too much for Peter. He felt unworthy, unholy, undeserving, sinful, even afraid. One cannot help but be reminded of the cleansing gift of reconciliation, when we are washed clean and set off to be light for the world. It isn’t the deeds that define us, rather it is the belief in the presence of Jesus in our lives; a presence that reassures in times of doubt, forgives in times of failure and returns us to the awareness of His love that is always with us. We too are invited to be fishers of our sisters and brothers. Rescuing them not by any power of our own, but rather awakening them to the light of Christ that is always shining on us and them. That selflessness is a fundamental building block in becoming those who love. Our own limited ability is a start for our call to seek out the lost, comfort the afflicted, … It is in our weakness that we become strong. Not in any physical sense but rather in accepting our role as in spiritual facilitators as it were. Invited by the beautiful hymn, The Prayer of St. Francis, we ask, “Make me a channel of your peace.” What better symbol of rescue from the sea than a “channel of His love.”

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Soon spring will be with us, inviting us to our annual “spring cleaning.” Get a head start, doing a little at a time. Be sure to recycle, re-gift or rediscover items in our garages (or closets). When not pressed for time, it can be fun remembering these old “friends.”

FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

Equipping Families to Pass On the Faith

EDGE We continue our series on Lent (we know, Lent hasn’t started, but we want you to be ready for it when it comes!) Parents, please join us on these nights. We have two left: Feb. 13th and the 27th.

LIFE TEEN “If God is all-loving, He won’t send me to hell.” So often our pride and sense of entitlement get in the way of our relationship with God and our understanding of who God is. We’ll be unpack-ing what this often-said phrase (or ones like it) means, and what the reality of God’s love is. Next Sunday we will be doing a service pro-ject—making hygiene kits for those in need, so feel free to bring supplies for it (we’ll also have some for you to use as well).

As we enter the winter months, please donate these items. You can do so at the Parish office, or at our location at 13570 Depot Street, San Martin. If you are so inclined and want to volunteer, come to San Martin Hall and talk to Debbie or any other volunteer. The fa-cility is open every Tuesday and Thursday, 10:00am - 1:00pm and the first Saturday of the month from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Currently we are in urgent need of the follow-ing items…

In addition to the Book Fair, students showed their appreciation for faculty and staff members,

parents, and parish staff...a great week!

from other Catholic schools for mass with Bishop Cantu.

DIOCESAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS CELEBRATE TOGETHER

As part of the Catholic Schools Week celebra-tion, representatives from all the Catholic ele-mentary and high schools in the diocese joined Bishop Cantu, Msgr. Fran Cilia, Fr. Brendan McGuire, priests from many of our parishes, and the Superintendent of Schools, Jenn Beltramo, for liturgy at St. Joseph Cathedral. The Student Council of St. Catherine School took light rail to the Cathedral.

Readings and music were provided by students from various schools. One of our 8th graders took part in the Call to Worship. The assembly joined in prayer for our schools to be true cen-ters for the teachings of Jesus and that students will in turn spread the Good News. Our stu-dents returned with a message that we are in-deed an integral part of the Body of Christ in the Diocese of San Jose.

Let there be peace on earth,

and let it begin with me!
