“Keep the Light Burning Bright”

October 2009 Dear Friends of Saint Catherine Academy, Saint Catherine Academy celebrated its tenth anniversary at our annual scholarship dinner this year. This event was the culmination of a very successful year for the Academy. Our enrollment continues to grow, our students continue to thrive in this special environment and our benefactors continue to support our mission in record numbers. We are grateful for this support as it allows us to continue to deliver on our mission to students who do not have the financial means to attend. The financial challenge is great—we successfully raised over $400,000 in 08-09. Individuals continue to generously support our mission. A long time friend of Saint Catherine Academy, Virginia McClinch provided the funds for the purchase of our first student activity van, and Britta and Denis Nayden challenged those who attended the scholarship dinner with a $50,000 match that was met success-fully that night! In addition, we continue to receive support from the Inner City Foundation for Charity and Education for par-tial scholarships for 8 students from Greater Bridgeport. Grant support for the establishment of a playground came from the Koch Foundation. This grant, when combined with the grants already received from the Con-gregation of Notre Dame, The Ursuline Serviam Ministry and the Richard Davoud Donchian Foundation al-lowed us to purchase and install new playground equipment. TD BankNorth supported our vocational program with a grant and the American Association of the Order of Malta provided a grant to develop a library/media center. This will be a collaborative effort between Malta volunteers and Saint Catherine Academy that will extend our ability to work individually with our students. The Knights of Columbus Connecticut State Council continues to support us through a number of initiatives in-cluding their Tootsie Roll Drive and their remarkable support of our annual scholarship dinner. They were joined this year by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus who provided sponsorship of our scholar-ship dinner in honor of Bishop Lori, the Supreme Chaplain of the Order. We are blessed with volunteer support from many organizations, most notably St. Piux X “Helping Hands”, led by Jane-Ellen Collins and Fr. Bob Kinnally and CT members of the Order of Malta, with leadership from Jeanie and Tom Tisdale. Special thanks are extended to Bill Lytton, our videographer extraordinaire and Gina Barber, Sr. Stephanie, Sr. Nancy, Janet Gordon, Rita Sabo, Kyle Tisdale and Alyssa Mocco for their volunteer service this past year. In addition, I would like to thank our Board, especially Charles Chiusano, Chairman and Chris Herman who chaired the Scholarship Dinner, for their strong support on our behalf. Finally, we are grateful for the support we receive from the Diocese of Bridgeport, most specifically from Bishop Lori, Nancy Matthews, Chancellor, Margaret Dames, Superintendent of Schools and Martin Tristine, Director of Finance.
