Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

THE LORD’S FLOCK

Sheep are high-maintenance animals. They are not very intelligent. Without guidance and care, especially in a climate like Israel’s, they would die quickly from predators, starva-tion, or just their own slowness. The scriptural image of us as the Lord’s flock is not terribly flattering to us, since it is only the never-ending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows the flock to survive. The feast of Christ the King was intended to call the world back to Christ as the sole power of the world, to bring back a flock that had been scattered by many negative forces of the growing industrial, scientific, and wartorn world of the early twentieth century. It is fit-ting that, as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us and who, likewise, will be there at the end of time. Interestingly enough, as the Gospel illus-trates, our own destiny is determined by the way we have been “shepherds” to the rest of the flock. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GIVING THANKS

On the fourth Thursday of November our thoughts turn to giving thanks. Many families have various traditions on this holiday, besides the family feast, that is. Perhaps before dinner, they each tell something that they are particularly thankful for. Perhaps they express gratitude in a special way to each member of the family. The greatest act of thanksgiving is the Eucharist. The name means “thanksgiving,” and it is the perfect way to begin this wonderful holiday. Liturgical Bits & Bytes Do you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure? Have members of your family suffered from these ailments? Do you have a poor diet? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you may want to consider being screened for your risk of stroke through the services of Life Line Screening. Life Line Screening uses ultrasound technology to view the plaque build up in your carotid arteries, the main arteries that carry blood to the brain. Blockages in these arteries are a leading cause of stroke. We are pleased to host this Life Line Screening event on Thursday, 12/18/2014 at St. Brig-id Roman Catholic Church. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

TEAM FAITH ~ Congratulations to our first grad-ers! They collected 55 out of 302 cans towards our food drive. They will enjoy a donut reward. Thank you to all who supported our effort to help feed the hungry. Much appreciation to TEAM FAITH and Patty Fiely for leading this service project. Outstanding! Faith and the Environment ~ Allegheny College students visited our fifth through eighth graders and taught how principles of Catholicism relate to the environment, calculated a “carbon footprint” and prayed for better stewardship of the earth. See our display in the gathering area. The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Psalm 24:1-2 Thanksgiving Break ~ no Faith Formation classes will be offered on Sunday, November 30th. May all families enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

MEMORIALS in memory of Karen Henderson from Karla Goerke.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of uni-versal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today’s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, & Lutheran churches, and others. —Rev.
