TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
A long with the reform of the Roman Canon and the redra ing of
an ancient Roman prayer in Eucharis c Pray‐er II, two addi onal
prayers were announced in 1969. Eucharis c Prayer III is a fresh
composi on. Like Eu‐charis c Prayer II, it has no preface of its
own, but the presider chooses from a long menu of possible
pref‐aces to become part of the prayer on a par cular occasion.
Also, like Eucharis c Prayer II it has a way to insert the name of
the deceased in Masses for the dead such as funerals and memorials.
The General Instruc on of the Roman Missal views Eucharis c Prayer
III as the best subs tute for Eucharis c Prayer I on Sundays and
feasts. In prac ce, this prayer is used very o en at Sunday Mass,
and its texts are familiar to all members of the assembly. In this
prayer, no ce that the priest extends his hands over the gi s and
calls down the Holy Spirit to change them into the Body and Blood
of Christ. This call of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis,
and Eastern Chris ans consider it to be the consecra on. La n Chris
ans have long considered the “ins tu on narra ve” to be the
consecra on. Partly in re‐sponse to a deep sensi vity to the East,
the reformers took care to structure all our new prayers with a
strong epiclesis. The poetry and images of Eucharis c Prayer III
are frui ul sources of medita on. Why not take a sentence or two
into your private prayer? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.

person(s) to help with the laundering of these linens, which is
done at home. Training will be provided. If you are able to help

Turn to the Lord for mercy; to our God, who is generous
in forgiving. — Isaiah 55:7b
CALL UPON THE LORD
T he very first line of today’s first reading summons us to seek
the Lord and to call upon God. This sen ment is echoed in the
refrain for today’s responsorial psalm: “The Lord is near to all
who call upon him” (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of
some‐one who constantly sought the Lord. In the ex‐cerpt we read
today from his le er to the Philippi‐ans, we find Saint Paul toward
the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant
with Christ. He writes, “For to me life is Christ” (Philippians
1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord
with Christ we need look no further than today’s Gospel. There we
find that God’s love and mercy are im‐measurable for all those who
seek and call upon the Lord.

Ac ons Do Not Coincide With Marke ng. Planned Parenthood (PP) o
en argues that increased fund‐ing will enable them to reduce the
numbers of abor ons, but their own reports contradict their marke
ng and talking‐points. The amount PP has received from federal,
state and local governments has been increasing steadily and has
more than tripled since 1998. During the same period, the number of
abor ons carried out by PP has risen quite drama cally. Revenue
received from government has increased from $165m in 1998 to $541m
in 2012 and the number of abor‐
ons at PP has risen from 165,509 in 1998 to 327,166 in 2012.
While PP talks about reducing abor ons, its ac ons speak volumes
and negates its claims. In fact, PP has mandated that every
affiliate must carry out abor ons in all its facili es na onwide.
Clearly, abor on is big business for PP. However, if abor on is not
"the business of government" why are taxpayers fund‐ing it?
