During this delightful day we travel by the coastline, focus on coastal culture and the beautiful sea side surroundings. We take our time to walk the black sandy beach, visit small fishing villages and the award winning Siglufjörður Herring Museum.

In the 1940’s and 1950’s Siglufjörður town bloomed due to the herring industry which had a great influence on the social and economical structure of Iceland.

For the first half we stay off the beaten track and enjoy nature away from all and everyone. The waterfalls are in some of Iceland’s biggest rivers that are each unique in shape and origin: Glacial rivers, draft rivers and spring rivers.

We take all the time we want and need to fully experience the magic of the great waterfall Dettifoss. We find the best sight for taking photos depending on weather and other conditions during that particular day.

The ground is more or less covered with snow and when needed we use snowshoes to make the walk easier and safe.

It is said that after seeing Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, up close and personal you will never be the same. Dettifoss dominates its surroundings and possesses the huge power created by mother nature.

We see the echoing cliffs of Hljóðaklettar in Vesturdalur valley and the imposing horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi, surrounded by precipitous cliffs.

In springtime we stop at Tjörnes peninsula where we will find puffins nesting in the impressive cliffs by the coastline.

During early summer the midnight sun does not set in North Iceland and therefore we have 24 hours of daylight. The underground will be explored. Our destination is a cave that boasts the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in an Icelandic lava cave.

We drive along a rugged track to the roots of Mt. Hvannfell. After 30 minutes walk across a lava field, we reach the Lofthellir lava cave. At least one hour is spent inside the cave, observing this unbelievable natural phenomenon.

Each company and tour is different from the other. Some are so-called classical whale watching trips while others also offer puffin watching, deep sea angling or island visiting.

Then there are the different types of boats, which range from traditional wooden boats to steel boats. The wooden boats were formally used for fishing but have been restored without compromising their original character, while the steel boats have two or three outdoor viewing platforms and an indoor as well. When others hurry, we relax and travel slowly for 2 days in this most isolated terrain you can find in Iceland. This Super Jeep adventure includes some of Iceland’s most famous highland sites and wilderness with waterfalls, calderas and volcanoes. In this tour we have all the time we need and we will venture deep into the raw, still cooling lava field of Holuhraun from the eruption, winter 2015 .

We stay overnight at a mountain hut or for the more adventurous we offer highland camping. Although we’re in the highlands, we still allow ourselves to enjoy a delicious BBQ dinner, especially selected for each excursion.

of the Yule Lads

The Yule Lads are the 13 sons of Grýla and Leppalúði, vicious trolls that live near Lake Mývatn. As the Lads grew up they wanted a place of their own and Dimmuborgir was the perfect place for the brothers to settle down.

An old tradition in Iceland is that 13 days prior to Christmas the Yule Lads start coming down from the mountains, one on each night. Children in Iceland place their best shoe on their windowsill before going to bed. Each night a little gift is left in the shoe from the Yule Lad that came down from the mountain that night. If the child has been misbehaving, there might be a raw potato left instead.

THE ICELANDIC YULE LADS

December 12th

The first one is Stekkjastaur/Sheep-Cote Clod, a very stiff fellow who tries to suck the milk from the farmers ewes.

December 13th

The second is Giljagaur/Gully Gawk, he sneaks into the cowshed and waits for the opportunity to steal milk.

December 14th

Third is Stúfur/Stubby, who as his name implies is on the small side.

December 15th

Fourth is Þvörusleikir/Spoon Licker, who loves to steal the wooden stirring spoon from kitchen.

December 16th Fifth is Pottaskefill/Pot Scraper, he tries to snatch pots that haven’t been washed and loves to lick the scraps from them.

December 17th

Sixth is Askasleikir/Bowl Licker, hiding under beds and if someone leaves his wooden food-bowl he grabs it and licks it clean.

December 18th

Seventh is Hurðaskellir/Door Slammer, an awfully noisy fellow slamming doors and keeping people awake.

December 19th

Eighth is Skyrgámur/Skyr Gobbler, his favourite food is Skyr (milk curd) so he sneaks into the pantry and gobbles up all the Skyr.

December 20th

Ninth is Bjúgnakrækir / Sausage Swiper, he loves sausages of all kinds and steals them whenever he can.

December 21st

Tenth is Gluggagægir/Window Peeper. Not as greedy as his brothers, but very curious and therefore peeping through windows.

December 22nd

Eleventh is Gáttaþefur/Door Sniffer, with a big nose. He loves the smell of cakes and often snatches a cake or two.

December 23rd

On St. Þorlák´s day the twelfth Ketkrókur/Meet Hook arrives. He adores lamb meat and as it is a tradition to cook smoked lamb on this day he might try to steal a leg.

December 24th

The thirteenth is Kertasníkir/Candle Beggar. He loves candles of all colours and might grab one from you.
