Safety Edges and Safety Bumpers are industrial grade, pressure sensitive, safety switches. Safety Edges and Safety Bumpers are mounted to moving parts of an industrial machine that may cause a hazardous work environment.
The purpose of a Safety Edge and Safety Bumper is to protect personnel and machinery. Both the Safety Edge and Safety Bumper are used as “pinch point” and “collision” safety sensors. They are designed to detect contact of an object and to emit a signal to the machine controls in response.
When activated, the Safety Edges and Safety Bumpers acts as an emergency stop that removes power from the machine. Safety Edges and Safety Bumpers are safety devices which are used as an integral part of the machine safety circuit.
Safety Edges and Safety Bumpers are used on moving objects that are dangerous while in motion. Typical applications are:

How it Works
The Safety Edge and Safety Bumper work on similar principles. They are both normally open (N/O) pressure sensitive contact switches. When pressure is applied, the two conductors of the Patented Zippswitch Sensor close, touch and emit a signal indicating a change of state has occurred. The change in state can be used to control the actions of devices of the machine controls.
The Safety Edge and Safety Bumper are designed to have 1/4” of compliance before the internal Sensor is activated. This prevents a false activation. When pressure is applied that overcomes the compliance, the Sensor is activated. The Safety Edge / Safety Bumper will continue to compress more than half the thickness of the compression foam. The Sensor remains closed during compression. When contact pressure is released, the sensor opens and the Safety Edge / Safety Bumper returns to it original shape.

The Zippswitch Safety Edge is enclosed in an extruded “Oil-Resistant” NITRILE Rubber. The NITRILE Rubber Safety Edge is designed for appl icat ions and envi ronments where machining and cutting fluids are present. Standard lengths are 6" to 96". Typical height is .5" and 1". The Zippswitch AGV Safety Safety Bumper is a heavy duty bumper designed specifically for AGVʼs. When mounted to an AGV, the Bumper acts as a collision sensor that is designed to detect any object that comes into contact with the AGV Safety Bumper.
The Zippswitch AGV Safety Safety Bumper is a normally open (N/O) pressure sensitive contact switches. When pressure is applied, the two conductors of the Patented Zippswitch Sensor close, touch and emit a signal indicating a change of state has occurred. The change in state is used to stop the Automated Guided Vehicle.
The Zippswitch AGV Safety Safety Bumper is designed to have 1 inch of compliance before the internal Sensor is activated. This prevents a false activation. When pressure is applied that overcomes the compliance, the Sensor is activated. Activation force is just 4 Lbs. The AGV Safety Bumper will continue to compress more than half the thickness of the compression foam. The Sensor remains closed during compression. When contact pressure is released, the sensor opens and the AGV Safety Bumper returns to it original shape.

A Zippswitch Safety Edge and Safety Bumper should always be used with a Safety Control Relay. The Safety Control Relay is an interface module between the Safety Edge / Safety Bumper and the machine controls. The Safety Control Relay allows the Safety Edge / Safety Bumper to run on small voltage and current values while also allowing the output to control high voltages and currents of the machine controls. Together, these components form a Safety System allowing safe interface between Safety Edge / Safety Bumper and Machine.
As a system, the two parts work in conjunction with one another to continuously monitor the machine safety system and control power to the dangerous conditions of the machine. When a person or object, i.e. forklift, comes in contact with the Safety Sensor, the internal Patented Zippswitch Sensing Strip closes and a change of state is detected by the controller. This action causes the safety relay output contacts to open and shut power off to the machine. Once the obstruction is removed and any danger is cleared, the system will need to be reset, manually or automatically, restoring power to the machine.
