FUNGI IN AIR - MYCOMETER®-AIRMycometer®-air is the state of the art test method for onsite quantification of fungal particles in air in less than an hour. The methodology measures the level of fungal particles in terms of viable and most nonviable spores and hyphal fragments. Further, two independent peer reviewed publications have shown that it also measures microparticles from the fungi. The Mycometer®-air methodology quantifies fungal particles in the air by measuring the level of the enzyme, β-N-acetylhexosaminidase (NAHA), from airborne fungal particles captured on a 0,8 µm pore size filter.

The ability to collect robust data onsite means the professional can make the best decision possible in the least amount of time.

Mycometer-Air provides unprecedented reliability over currents methods. Whereas, spore traps and culture plates data sets may have standard deviations of more than 50%, Mycometer-air is consistently less than 10%. Improving data reliablility, means the data collected is more meaningful.

Formaldehyde Measurement - to very low levels of detectionThe FM-801 measurement range, with excellent specified accuracy, is from 20ppb to 1ppm, although the unit will read out all the way down to 10ppb. Display readings in ppb or µg/m3 HCHO.

Some Key Facts:• The FM-801 may be used for continuous monitoring, and/or for 30-minute spot checks.

• The FM-801 can be interfaced to a GrayWolf AdvancedSense meter, WolfPack monitor or WIN7 Tablet/Notebook. FM-801 readings are simultaneous to readings from any other sensors connected to the AdvancedSense, WolfPack, or Laptop, logged into the same data file. Attach audio/photo/video/drawing/text notes to data files for efficient, reliable documentation of environmental surveys.

• The FM-801 base unit can also be used as an independent, simple data-logger. Logged data may be downloaded to GrayWolf’s versatile WolfSense PC software.

• Sensor cartridges may also be used as independent passive samplers which are then checked/displayed via the FM-801 Base Unit.

FORMALDEHYDE MONITOR FM-801

FM-801 FORMALDEHYDE METERThe FM-801 is a portable, continuous measurement formaldehyde (HCHO) meter now available from GrayWolf. A reusable sensor cartridge employs the chemical reaction between formaldehyde and ß-diketone on a porous glass. The yellowing that results from this reaction is measured via photoelectric photometry with accurate readings to <20ppb HCHO, without significant cross-sensitivity from typical background compounds, making it ideal for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) applications. Tests run in as little as 30 minutes. The unit ‘re-zeros’ between 30 minute tests allowing for continuous monitoring, and provides an output for real-time connection to most GrayWolf platforms.

ELIMINTES INTERFERENCES The Z-300XP Formaldehyde meter uses a filter cartridge to eliminate many of the common interferences.

The procedure is simple. Insert the filter cartridge into the air intake receptacle labelled “Filter” in the back of the meter.

With the use of the filter system, interferences are virtually completely removed.

Only certain aldehydes and ketones need to be considered. The filters do not permit separations of these classes of compounds.

CROSS-SENSITIVITY DATA

FORMALDEHYDE MONITOR Z-300XP

Z-300XP FORMALDEHYDE METEREnvironmental Sensors Co.’s Formaldehyde Meter is a portable desktop instrument that measures formaldehyde concentration in a range of 0-30 ppm and a resolution of 0.01 ppm.

The instrument makes it possible to monitor formaldehyde vapour in air. The instrument has a LCD display giving concentrations in ppm every 10 seconds, a low battery indicator, and an audible alarm that can be set at any level from 0-30 ppm.

With the touch of a button, the meter displays an average concentration.

The internal pump makes it possible to sample from hard-to-reach areas or confined spaces by attaching a flexible tube to the meter.

The actual concentration of interfering gases and thecorresponding signals they give are shown below.

TECHNOLOGYHere’s how the Quantifit works.

During a fit test, the respirator inlets are capped with test adapters, and the inhalation valves are removed from the mask.

With the test subject holding his or her breath for no more than ten seconds, the Quantifit then establishes and maintains a slight vacuum, or controlled negative pressure, inside the mask. Since the respirator inlets are sealed, all sources of leakage into the mask are through the face-to-facepiece seal. The volume of air drawn out of the mask by the Quantifit during this short period of time is equal to the leak rate into the mask through the faceto-facepiece seal.

It’s that simple….

DIESEL PARTICULATE MONITOR

Airtec TM Diesel Particulate/Elemental Carbon MonitorThe Airtec monitor is a compact and highly portable real-time elemental carbon monitor designed to determine exposure of workers in underground mines to diesel particulate material (DPM). Airtec uses a real time particle capture and light transmission method to yield elemental carbon values which closely correlate with NIOSH 5040 test results to measure EC and TC levels in underground mines.

Diesel particulates are composed primarily of elemental and organic carbon, and have been found to present a health hazard. DPM levels can be high in workplaces where diesel equipment is used; particularly so in underground mines due to the enclosed workspace.

Airtec is designed to allow the operator and management to take immediate, remedial action to address a problem area within a mine. Levels can also be tracked over time to determine the possibility of long term health hazards and help eliminate the risks associated with over exposure.

Included in Kit:Airtec monitor, inlet prefilter assembly, *five filter cassettes, *two prefilter cartridges, USB to mini-USB PC cable, rechargeable battery with 9V/2A Universal AC adaptor (100-240VAC)

*filters and cassettes to be purchased for rental

and a hard carry-case

CONSUMABLES REQUIRED¼” LDPE or HDPE tubing and ¼” silicone tubing required (see pg 69)

LOW FLOW KITThe basic ideology of low-flow sampling is that the well is purged at a low rate to minimise drawdown and avoid disturbance in the well. The low sampling rate means the water is pumped from the formation whilst leaving the stagnant water in the casing undisturbed. Typical flow rates are 0.1 to 0.5 L/min, which is close to or less than the natural movement of groundwater through the well.

RENTAL INCLUDES• QED Sample Pro bladder pump and case

• QED MP10 pump controller and blue hose

• Solinst 12V air compressor and red hose (connect to running vehicle’s car battery) OR CO2 gas cylinder with Regulator, red hose and trolley

• Spares kit – tube cutter, spare o-rings, fuses, pump fittings, thread tape, small wrench, 9V batteries

• Wrench

• Transport cases

PERISTALTIC PUMPThe Geotech Geopump Series II Peristaltic Pump is designed for single and multi-stage pressure or vacuum pumping of liquids. The Series II model has two drive heads, 0-350 RPM and 0-600 RPM. It operates by mechanical peristalsis, so the sample only comes in contact with the tubing. This allows for consistent sample integrity as well as easy cleaning and replacement

The Geopump is ideally suited for field sample removal from shallow wells.

MicroPurge® Drawdown/Water Level Meter• The MP30 Drawdown/Water Level Meter provides a patented, simpler way to

assure drawdown control when connected to the MicroPurge® controllers, and acts as a high quality water level meter.

• The MP30 can easily switch between both modes. For drawdown control the meter is turned to MicroPurge® mode and the probe is lowered to the point of maximum drawdown.

• If purging lowers the water level to the selected point, a light and buzzer on the MP30 meter are activated and the controller is signalled to enter a standby mode until the water level rises again. A separate light indicates probe submergence in both modes.

• The MP30 Drawdown Control Meter is designed to help control draw-down during monitoring well purging. The MP30 has 3 primary modes of use: When connected to the MP10 controller, pump operation is automatically paused if the elected drawdown limit is reached, then resumed when the well recovers to this point.

• Includes light and sound indicators of reaching the drawdown limit (dry probe condition).

• When switched to water level mode, the MP30 provides conventional water level meter functions of light and sound indication upon contact of the probe with water.

What Does a PID Detect?A PID measures all compounds whose ionization energy (IE) is less than the energy of the lamp photons (see figure at right). RAE Systems offers 9.8, 10.6, and 11.7 eV lamps.

Broadband Toxic Compound Monitoring in the WorkplaceUntil recently, the only low-cost way to get a “Go” or “No Go” reading for toxic VOCs was through the use of broadband toxic sensor such as MOS (metal oxide semiconductor) or lower explosive limit (LEL) sensors. These are not sensitive enough to provide accurate warnings of most toxic vapors until the permissible exposure levels are greatly exceeded. For example, benzene’s permissible exposure limit is 1 ppm, due to its highly carcinogenic nature. PIDs can easily measure down to 0.1 ppm benzene, while MOS and LEL sensors are best used above 100 ppm and cannot detect these low levels.

Advantages of a PIDVery sensitive – low ppm readings measured with confidence.

Instantaneous display, updated every second, for real-time monitoring of toxic chemicals.

Threshold monitoring – visible and audible alarms in real time for STEL (short-term exposure limit), TWA (time-weighted average), and Peak. Alarm signals vary for each condition.

Datalog for compliance and work shift trend analysis.

Fast, simple calibration with isobutylene. A large table of correction factors is available, alleviating the need to purchase many calibration gases.

Protection Vs. DetectionPIDs have traditionally been considered “detection” instruments, particularly well suited for use by first responders and entry teams to determine the extent of a spill or airborne emission. RAE Systems’ PIDs are “protection” monitors, quantifying chemical concentrations and alerting workers to hazardous conditions. Other applications include PID ppm and ppb monitoring for combustible gases such as jet fuel, gasoline, and solvents.

Other methods such as colorimetric tubes provide only a snapshot of the concentration and no real-time alarm, unless the sample happens to be taken at the exact time of the peak occurrence. RAE Systems PID monitors provide ongoing detection and instantaneous alarms to indicate when exposure limits have been exceeded for a wide range of chemicals.

When limits are exceeded, the datalogging feature of RAE Systems monitors allows the individual to store, recall, and “see” exactly when the levels were a problem, whereas a tube cannot indicate when a level was exceeded or

whether it happened all at one time or over the course of a worker’s shift.

Data from RAE Systems monitors can be instantly accessed from a personal computer. An individual can be asked what happened to create a situation in which exposure limits were exceeded while the individual can still recollect what happened. The answer could be as simple as cleaning with solvents or the failure of a ventilator. Therefore, with fast-acting PIDs, instantaneous alarms and datalogging, RAE Systems monitors allow safety action to be taken immediately. Other methods, such as activated charcoal sampling, can take days or weeks to get results back from a lab.

Measuring a “Witches’ Brew” of Chemicals for a Particular ToxicPIDs can be used to measure a highly toxic component of a complex mixture if its percentage in the mixture is known. For example, if a gasoline contains 1% benzene and the broadband PID reading for the entire gasoline mixture is below 50 ppm, then benzene is below its Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 0.5ppm.

A PID, short for photoionization detector, is a broadband sensor that responds to a large variety of organic and some inorganic compounds.

The general class of compounds suitable for detection is volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hydrocarbons (HC). Because of their sensitivity and fast response at extremely low concentrations of compounds (parts per billion), PIDs protect workers not only from gases immediately dangerous to life, but also from toxic vapors that have long-term health effects.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

USING PIDS FOR 10% OF LEL DECISIONS

One of the many requirements for entering confined spaces is the measurement of confined spaces for flammable gases. Prior to entry of a confined space, the level of flammable gases must be below 10% of LEL (lower explosive limit). The most common sensor used for measuring LEL is the Wheatstone bridge/catalytic bead/pellistor sensor (“Wheatstone bridge”).

LEL Sensor Limitations:• “Heavier” hydrocarbon vapors

have difficulty diffusing into the LEL sensor and reduce its output

• Common chemicals may poison LEL sensors

PIDs: Alternatives for 10% of LELPhotoionization detectors (PIDs) are sensitive hydrocarbon sensors originally designed to measure ppm levels of hydrocarbons for the environmental industry. PIDs are uniquely suited for measuring hydrocarbon mixtures. Because PIDs use an optical technology, they are resistant to the poisons that can ruin Wheatstone bridge sensors.

ATMOSPHERIC HAZARDS IN CONFINED SPACES

Atmospheric hazards in a confined space are those that expose entrants to a risk such as death, entrapment, injury, or acute illness from one or more of the following causes:

• Oxygen: An atmospheric oxygen concentration below 19.5% (oxygen deficiency), or above 23.5% (oxygen enrichment)

• Combustible gases• Toxic gases

WHY MONITOR BENZENE?

Benzene is a known human carcinogen that is present in automotive gasoline and other fuels in concentrations typically 0.2 to 3%. Its regulated exposure limit is so low (proposed 8-hour day TWA of 0.5 ppm) that its concentration alone usually defines the toxicity of the fuel vapors as a whole. Thus, it is necessary to measure low concentrations of benzene (often ≤1ppmv) in the presence of much higher concentrations (tens to hundreds of ppmv total) of the hundreds of aromatic and aliphatic compounds that make up gasoline.

Specific Benzene MeasurementsRAE-Sep™ benzene tubes scrub nearly all components out of gasoline vapors except benzene. This is accomplished through a proprietary absorption medium in the tubes. Further selectivity is afforded by using a 9.8 eV lamp, which responds strongly to aromatics but weakly to many hydrocarbons.

Applications include tank entry pre-screening during refinery and plant maintenance, hazardous material response, marine spill response and refinery downstream monitoring.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON VOC’S?

VOCs are the chemical compounds that keep industry going, and include:

• Fuels• Oils, degreasers, heat transfer

fluids• Solvents, paints• Plastics, resins and their precursorsVOCs are found throughout industry, from the obvious applications in the petrochemical industry to not-so-obvious applications such as sausage manufacturing.

DEFINITION OF TWA, STEL AND CEILING

Typically, the TWA is the lowest value, STEL is somewhat higher and the Ceiling is the highest. Ceiling is the concentration that should never be exceeded, even for one instant. The STEL is a running average concentration over the immediately previous 15-minute period.

The instantaneous concentrations may exceed the STEL value as long as they never exceed the Ceiling, and the 15-minute running average never exceeds the STEL limit. If the STEL alarm level is reached, the worker must be removed from STEL-level exposure for at least one hour.

Workers can be exposed to a maximum of four STEL periods per 8-hour shift, with at least one hour between exposure periods.

For detailed information about calculating STEL, TWA, Min, Max, and Average Values for ToxiRAE PID, refer to RAE Systems Technical Note TN-119.

FLAME IONIZATION DETECTORS (FIDS)

Flame Ionization Detectors (FIDs) respond to a broad range of organic compounds but are non-selective.

While their linearity is excellent, their use is limited by their large size and weight, including the need to carry a hydrogen cylinder. FIDs are relatively expensive and maintenance-intensive, and this limits their use in most industries. PIDs and FIDs are often referred to generically as organic vapor analyzers, or OVAs. Many people want to know the difference between the two techniques, and the difference is really one of preference. The difference between an FID and a PID is like the difference between a meterstick and a yardstick. They effectively measure the same things, but because PIDs are smaller, easier to use, and significantly less expensive, their usefulness in industry is potentially greater than FIDs.

Alarm Setting = TLVmix / CFmix

where Xi , TLVi, and CFi are the mole fraction of total VOCs, TLVs, and CFs of the individual components, respectively

Risk Decisions Based on PIDsPhotoionization detectors (PIDs) can measure volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxic gases at concentrations from parts per billion (ppb) to 10,000 parts per million (ppm). This sensitivity allows PIDs to be used to make accurate, instantaneous decisions as to the levels of ionizable chemicals to which workers are exposed. By simultaneously solving for human and PID meter sensitivity, a logical program of atmospheric risk reduction based upon PID response can be implemented in both known and unknown chemical environments.

Three Scenarios on How to Set PID Alarms: In order to better understand making a decision that combines these two sensitivities we can look at three specific examples of applying a PID to make an exposure limit decision:

1. Single gas/vapor

2. Gas/vapor mixture with constant make-up

3. Gas/vapor mixture with varying make-up

1. PID Alarms for a Single Gas/VaporIt is comparatively easy to gain information on a single chemical:

• Identify the chemical.

• Set the PID correction factor to that chemical from the PID manufacturer’s listing. This solves the equation for PID sensitivity.

• Find the Exposure limit(s) for the chemical (refer to exposure standards). This solves the equation for human sensitivity.

• Set the PID alarms according to the exposure limits.

Most PIDs can automatically do the math involving CF, so, for example, all the user has to do is select “toluene” from the PID library, and the PID is measuring in “toluene” ppm. Then set the PID alarm to the appropriate value (100 ppm for OSHA), and the PID is able to accurately make “toluene” decisions. For example:

0.5CF x 100 ppmiso= 50 ppmtoluene

Exposure Limit = 100ppmtoluene

Conclusion = Atmosphere is safe

2. PID Alarms for a Gas/Vapor Mixture with Constant Make-up

Often processes do not involve a single chemical, but may involve a compound that is a mixture of toxic chemicals. This “witches’ brew” of toxic compounds requires greater care in determining alarm setpoints. If the contents of

the mixture are identifiable, the individual chemicals and their concentrations should be easily determined through a contents label or MSDS. Then the following equation can be used to determine the toxicity of the mixture:

ELmix = 1

(X1/EL1 + X2/EL2 + X3/EL3 + ... Xi/ELi)

“EL” is the Exposure Limit and X is the mole fraction (percent by volume) of each volatile chemical. Similarly, the Correction factor for the mixture can be calculated using the following equation:

CFmix = 1

(X1/CF1 + X2/CF2 + X3/CF3 + ... Xi/CFi)

To clarify the usage of these equations lets take an example. Suppose that you have a complaint of paint odors and upon investigating you find that the paint contains 15% styrene and 85% xylene. Then the exposure limit is calculated as follows:

ELmix = 1/(0.15/50 + 0.85/100) = 87 ppmmix

• 0.15 is 15% styrene

• 50 is the 50 ppm exposure limit for styrene

• 0.85 is 85% xylene

• 100 is the 100 ppm exposure limit for xylene

In a similar manner the Correction Factor is calculated:

CFmix = 1/(0.15/0.4 + 0.85/0.6) = 0.56

• 0.15 is 15% styrene

• 0.4 is the CF for styrene

• 0.85 is 85% xylene

• 0.6 is the CF for o-xylene

The reading in the area with the paint odors was 120 on the PID in isobutylene units. Multiplying this reading by the correction factor of 0.56, an actual concentration in mixture units was 67.2 ppm. This is under the calculated exposure limit of 87 ppm of mixture. If the reading were 178 ppm in isobutylene units, the actual concentration would be 100 ppm of the mixture, consisting of 15 ppm styrene and 85 ppm xylene. This mixture reading is over the exposure limit of 87, even though none of the components are over their individual exposure limits.

3. Setting PID Alarms for a Gas/Vapor Mixture with Varying Make-up: The “Controlling Compound” (example)

Many times we can identify the chemicals present, but their relative concentrations vary throughout a process. Or, in situations like HazMat Response, one cannot predict the chemicals present or their relative concentrations. Therefore, we have to look at another way of using the PID to make decisions. Setting alarms in a varying or unknown mixture means that you have to simultaneously interpret both the human sensitivity (exposure limits) and PID sensitivity (Correction Factors) for all of the chemicals involved. Fortunately, this is easier than it sounds. Every mixture has a compound that is the most toxic and “controls” the setpoint for the whole mixture. Determine that chemical, and you can determine a conservative setpoint for the entire mixture. The basic assumption is that if we are safe for the “worst” chemical in a mixture, we will be safe for all of the others.

1. Express all exposure limits in equivalent units.

2. Look for the compound with the lowest exposure limits in equivalent units.

3. Set the PID for that setpoint, and you are safe for all of the chemicals in the mixture.

Table 1:

Chemical Name Exposure LimitEthanol 1000

Toluene 100

Acetone 750

Table 1 is a simple example where ethanol appears to be the safest compound and toluene appears to be the most toxic. This is because most people are accustomed to making decisions solely on human sensitivity. Users of meters rarely take into account that, like humans, meters have varying sensitivities to different chemicals. Therefore, Table 1 only provides half of the decision-making equation. The exposure limit is expressed in units of different chemicals. When trying to use a PID to make a decision regarding which is the “worst” chemical, one might be comparing 1000 apples to 100 pineapples. What is required is to express the exposure limits in a common

unit of measurement. Because PIDs are calibrated to isobutylene, and Correction Factors are expressions of PID sensitivity to a chemical relative to isobutylene this is very easy to do. First let’s look at this theoretically:

ELChemical: Exposure Limit in chemical units (ppm).

Unless otherwise indicated the EL is typically an 8-hour TWA.

CF = PID Isobutylene Response x Concentration of gas (ppmv)

Conc. of isobutylene (ppmv) x Response of gas on PID

ELIsobutylene = ELchemical (ppmv)

CFchemical

So to get the exposure limit in units of isobutylene we divide the exposure limit in chemical units by the ratio of chemical units to isobutylene units.

Table 2:

Chemical Name

10.6eV CF

ELChemical ELIsobutylene

Ethanol 12 1000 83Toluene 0.50 100 200Acetone 1.1 750 682

In Table 2, the far right column expresses all of the exposure limits in equivalent units of isobutylene. Now the chemicals can be compared on equal footing. One can compare apples to apples. While humans are not as sensitive to ethanol as they are to toluene, the low PID sensitivity to ethanol combined with the highest exposure limit in the table makes ethanol the “controlling compound” when the exposure limits are expressed in equivalent isobutylene units. In this example, the PID is left on an isobutylene measurement scale and the alarm is set to 83 ppm. As long as the PID does not alarm, then no respiratory protection is required.

Note: Setting alarm limits this way is the most conservative, restrictive approach, required by the limited information. When compound ratios are known better, the methods in Section 2 always allow higher alarm settings and fewer work restrictions

IntroductionTables 1 - 3 show the wait times that need to be considered when using extension tubing, to allow for the gas sample to reach the instrument. The times assume that the sample line has not been pre-filled with the air sample of interest.

ResultsOnly the smallest diameter tubing (1/8” O.D., which is 1/16” I.D.) causes a substantial pressure drop and reduced flow rate. Wider 4 mm O.D. (1/9” I.D.) or 3/16” O.D. (1/8” I.D.) can cause some pressure drop at longer lengths or if it has many bends (see Table 4 at end of next page). For the UltraRAE, we recommend using the wider 4 mm Teflon tubing (p/n411-0005) to reduce strain on the pump and to give better consistency. The times should be added to the standard measurement times for the UltraRAE compound of interest. For the MiniRAE, the delay time data are minimum measurement times that may be exceeded; for the UltraRAE, it is important to have exact timing.

Tubing MaterialsNever use Tygon or rubber tubing as extension probes when measuring VOCs, because these materials strongly absorb VOCs. The higher the boiling point of the compound, the greater the effect. Short Tygon connections are acceptable. For benzene, connections less than 6” have little effect at the flow rates typical for MiniRAE and UltraRAE, although it is preferable to keep them less than a few inches. Teflon or metal tubing absorbs the least VOCs; stiff polyurethane is a good second choice if the formers are not available.

Pump Flow CurvesFigure 1 below shows curves of flow vs. inlet vacuum for RAEGuard and ppbRAE. The MiniRAE 2000 has the same flow characteristics as the ppbRAE. Although the pumps can draw down to about 100” of H2O (74 mm Hg) without leaks, this creates a significantly reduced flow rate. We recommend not applying greater than 40” of H2O (30 mm Hg) vacuum to avoid excessive strain on the pump and reduce the chance of leaks developing when parts are worn.

Pressure Drop in TubingPressure drop in extension tubing depends on the inner diameter, the number and severity of bends, and total flow rate. Typical pressure drop for different types of tubing and flow rates are summarized in Table 4 below. The “Max Flows” in Table 4 are the nominal flows with no tubing or only short sections.

To calculate the flowrate with tubing attached, use the value in Table 4 to estimate the vacuum in the tubing and then read the flow drop off of Figure 1. For example, a 10-foot section of 1/16th-inch I.D. tubing will cause a pressure drop of 1.3 x 10 = 13 inches of water in a ppbRAE or MiniRAE with nominal flowrate of 500 cc/min. Figure 1 shows that at a vacuum of 13 “H2O the flowrate drops from 540 to 450 cc/min. For 100 feet of

2.8-mm I.D. tubing a RAEGuard with nominal 650 cc/min flow will result in 0.1 x 100 = 10“H2O vacuum and thus a flow drop from 650 to about 550 cc/min. These estimates give only a rough idea of the flow rates expected and will vary with the user’s exact configuration. Because of the high pressure drop in 1/16th-inch I.D. tubing, we recommend using this tubing only if the length is less than a few meters, and using wider-bore tubing for longer distances

Maximum Vacuum or PressureThe maximum vacuum obtained on most RAE instruments with a built-in pump (including MiniRAE 2000, ppbRAE, RAEGuard, VRAE and MultiRAE Plus on high pump speed) is about 280 mm Hg (150 inches of H2O). On the outlet side, these instruments (except MultiRAE, which has no outlet port) can push against a pressure of up to about 6 psi or 170 inches of H2O (310mm Hg). Note that the flow is close to zero, or very low, at these maximum values, and RAE Systems does not recommend operating the pump for long periods under such conditions.

Introduction

When using PIDs it is often necessary to set alarm limits for mixtures of compounds. To do this, it is necessary to know the threshold limit value (TLV) for the mixture. In a few cases of common complex mixtures such as gasoline, TLVs exist, but in many cases the mixture TLV must be calculated from the TLVs of the individual components. Once the TLV is known, it is best to calibrate with the compound mixture and set the alarm limits directly. However, when standards of gas mixtures are not available, it is possible to calculate mixture Correction Factors (CFs) from those of the individual components, and use this value to set the alarm limits. The necessary equations are given below:

TLVmix = 1 / (X1/TLV1 + X2/TLV2 + X3/TLV3 + … Xi/TLVi)

CFmix = 1 / (X1/CF1 + X2/CF2 + X3/CF3 + … Xi/CFi)

Alarm Setting = TLVmix/CFmix

where Xi, TLVi, and CFi are the mole fraction of total VOCs, TLVs, and CFs of the individual components, respectively. TLVs are available for many compounds in the ACGIH Handbook, and CFs are available for over 200 compounds in RAE Systems Technical Note TN-106.

Example 1: All Compounds Detected

Air contaminated with ppm level VOCs distributed as 5% benzene (CF = 0.53, TLV = 0.5 ppm) and 95% n-hexane (CF = 4.3, TLV = 50 ppm) has a Correction Factor of:

CFmix = 1 / (0.05/0.53 + 0.95/4.3) = 3.2

A reading of 100 then corresponds to 320 ppm of the total mixture, comprising 16 ppm benzene and 304 ppm hexane. The TLV for this mixture is:

TLVmix = 1 / (0.05/0.5 + 0.95/50) = 8.4 ppm

This corresponds to 8.0 ppm hexane and 0.4 ppm benzene. The alarm setting for an instrument calibrated with isobutylene is:

TLV reading = 8.4 / 3.2 = 2.6 ppm

A common practice is to set the lower alarm limit to half the TLV reading, and the higher limit to the TLV. Thus, one would set the lower and higher alarms to 1.3 and 2.6 ppm, respectively.

Example 2: Not All Compounds Detected

Air-VOC mixture containing 30% phenol (CF = 1.0, TLV = 5 ppm) and 70% methylene chloride (CF = No Response, TLV = 25 ppm) has a Correction Factor, TLV, and alarm setting of:

CFmix = 1 / (0.3/1.0 + 0.7/∞) = 3.3 TLVmix = 1 / (0.3/5 + 0.7/25) = 11.4 ppm

TLV reading = 11.4 / 3.3 = 3.4 ppm

The suggested low and high alarm settings are 1.7 and 3.4 ppm. The TLV mixture corresponds to 30% of 11.4 = 3.4 ppm phenol and 70% of 11.4 = 8.0 ppm methylene chloride. In this case, the PID with a 10.6 eV lamp does not respond to the methylene chloride, and all the response is due to the phenol. The alarm setting of 3.4 ppm is lower than the TLV of the phenol alone (5 ppm), because the methylene chloride contributes to the toxicity of the mixture even though it is not measured.

Constant Pressure Controller

Cat. No. 224-26-CPC

The Low Flow Constant Pressure Controller (CPC) is an accessory for the SKC AirChek® 52, AirChek 2000, and AirChek XR5000 sampling pumps that allows low flow sampling for one or more sample tubes.

In conjunction with an Adjustable Low Flow Holder (Cat. No. 224-26-01, 224-26-02, 224-26-03, or 224-26-04), the CPC is used as a pressure regulator to maintain a constant 20 inches water back pressure across the needle valve(s) in the Adjustable Low Flow Holder. The CPC inlet to the sample tube is marked with a label for ease of orientation.

Operation

1. Set the pump flow rate at approximately 1.5 L/min, as outlined in the pump’s operating instructions.

2. Using a short length (approx. 1 to 1-1/2”) of Tygon® tubing, connect the pump inlet to the CPC outlet (the side of the CPC without a label).

3. Connect the inlet port of the CPC to the Adjustable Low Flow Holder. Insert selected sample tube and adjust flow (see operating instructions for Adjustable Low Flow Holder).

Note: The CPC has 2 small inlet ports on the bottom of the unit. These ports should be periodically in-spected for blockage, which can occur when sampling in dusty environments. Blocked ports can cause back pressure to increase. If needed, clean ports with a small pick and blow particles away with a puff of air.

Special Notes

A. It is good industrial hygiene practice to perform a pre and post-sample calibration.

B. Changing the flow rate through any one port will not change the flow through the other ports appreciably. It is recommended practice to perform a second calibration of all active ports under your unique sampling conditions prior to sampling (see Steps 5.b through 5.d above).

C. Do not use the flow adjustment screw to shut off flow completely as valve seat damage may result. Use an unopened tube to seal the port.

D. Do not use an oversize screwdriver as thread damage may result.

E. Do not calibrate several tube holders using only one pump. Calibrate each tube holder with the same pump that will be used for sampling. Calibrate before each sampling operation.

F. When using a multiple port tube holder, set the pump for a flow rate that is ≥ 15% higher than the sum of the flow rates through all connected tubes. See pump operating instructions for details.

G. If the pump enters flow fault 15 to 20 seconds after the adjustable flow tube holder is attached, confirm that the pump has been set properly for low flow operation. See pump operating instructions.

H. If you remove one tube from a multiple tube holder during the sampling period, immediately replace it with an unopened tube for the remainder of the sampling period.

I. Two rubber sleeves are supplied for each tube holder port to hold the sorbent tube in place. The smaller ID rubber sleeve comes preassembled and attached to the port. The second larger ID rubber sleeve comes unassembled and may be used for a sorbent tube with a larger OD. To ensure a proper fi t, test each sorbent tube and rubber sleeve fit prior to sampling. Using a rubber sleeve with the incorrect ID may result in a loss of flow.

5. Calibrate the flow rate through each representative tube (see Notes A, E, F, and G below).

a. Set pump flow rate as directed in the pump operating instructions.

b. Connect the tubing from a calibrator to the exposed end of the tube in the first port.

c. Using a flat-head screwdriver (see Note D below), turn the flow adjustment screw (needle valve) 3 on the first port clockwise to decrease flow or counterclockwise to increase flow until the desired flow rate is indicated on the calibrator.

d. Note: For tri and quad models, first rotate the anti-tamper cover(s) 6 to expose the flow adjustment screw(s) 3. Reposition anti-tamper covers 6 when calibration is completed.

e. Repeat Steps 5.a and 5.c for remaining active ports (see Note B below).

Note: Each port is controlled independently with its own flow adjustment screw (needle valve).

f. Once flow is calibrated for each active port, it is recommended practice to repeat Steps 5.b through 5.d before removing representative tubes.

6. Remove the tube(s) used for calibration from the ports and replace with the tube(s) to be used for sampling.

7. Thread the appropriate protective tube cover(s) onto the threaded fitting(s) 2 on the tube holder.

8. Use the collar clip to attach the holder to the worker’s clothing near the breathing zone.

9. Sample for the desired time (see Note H below).

10. When sampling is complete, reinstate the representative tube(s) used for calibration in Step 5 and perform a post-sample calibration.

1. Remove sampler from sealed pouch. Retain and set aside all other parts, including the desorption effi ciency tube(s).

2. Write the start time, date, and a user-assigned sampler ID number on the label on the back of the sampler. On a sheet of paper, record the temperature and atmospheric pressure at the sampling site.

3. Remove the lock, cap, and O-ring from the sampler and set aside. Clip sampler to worker’s clothing in the breathing zone. Ensure small holes are facing out.

Note: Sample the entire workshift to obtain a true 8-hour exposure. If breaks/lunch are part of the 8-hour workday or occur in the work area, samplers may remain sampling. If desired, the sampler can be removed for breaks/lunch and sealed with the provided cap. When the worker returns to the work area, replace the sampler on the worker’s clothing and remove the cap. Note the times the sampler is removed from and placed back on the worker to ensure accurate air volumes.

4. At the end of the desired sampling period, unclip the sampler from worker clothing. Push the O-ring, cap, and lock (removed during Step 3) onto the side of the sampler containing the holes.

5. Write the stop time on the label on the back of the sampler.

6. Carefully package and send the sampler, all other parts, and sampling site information including temperature and atmospheric pressure to an AIHA-accredited laboratory for analysis. If using an in-house laboratory, refer to the analysis instructions included in this package.
