Safely bike driving – WITH BAD WEATHER
BE VISIBLE
Turn your lights on in rain, fog, sleet, freezing rain or snow.
It will help your visibility - and also help other drivers to see you
Wear bright clothes with reflectors
SEE THE DIFFERENCE:
KEEP DISTANCE
In wet weather double or triple the space you normally leave between you and the next car
You'll need up to ten times as much space to stop on slippery roads!!
Brake gently
WEATHER WARNINGS
Watch out for severe weather warnings before you drive
If a strong storm comes on while you're on the road and it's raining too hard to see, try to find a safe place to pull over until the worst of the rain is over
DANGER SPOTS
Watch for danger spots ahead:
Bridges and overpasses may freeze before the roads do
Watch for painted lines and metal covers on the road: They are VERY slick when wet so avoid riding over these, especially when making a turn
PREPARATION
When starting out in bad weather, test your brakes to see how far it takes you to stop.
Prepare yourself by wearing warm rain clothes with reflectors
Safely bike driving – AROUND TOWN
TURNING TO LEFT
Avoid making left hand turns across busy intersections that don't have turn signals, because you will have to cross the lane of the opposite direction
OBSERVE CAREFULLY
If a car sets a blinker, keep observing if the car is actually turning according to the blinker or if the driver just forgot to turn it of or changed his mind
BE AWARE
Be cautious of aggressive drivers and try to stay out of their way. They are responsible for causing a lot of accidents!
Don't do anything that will cause another driver to hit the brakes such as pulling out in front of him or shifting into his lane.
STAY SAFE…
…and thank you for your attention!
