Advanced Manufacturing

Engineering employment declined 0.3% in Southeast Michigan between 2008-12. During the same period, engineering nationwide declined 5.3%. Employment is now approximately 74,200.

Although the region lost many jobs during the recession, 27,900 engineering/drafter job postings in 2012 point to growth. The job posting-to-employment ratio for engineering and drafters is approx. 19 postings for every 50 jobs or 37.6%.

Engineering Demographics

• There were 74,200 engineering jobs in Southeast Michigan in 2012.

• 50.4% of engineers are aged 45-64, higher than several other occupations. Currently, 18.9% of 74,194 are age 55+.

• In 2012, 94% of engineers were male and 6% were female.

• According to a new Automation Alley report Greater Detroit finished third nationally in the number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) degree completions.

• In 2011, there were 5,148 degree completions from southeast MI institutions in engineering-related fields.
