The man, who was undergoing cure at Mater Dei hospital, had a number of other chronic medical conditions. He tested postive for the virus on 9th May. The man passed away in Mater Dei Hospital during the night. Government expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. The appeal remains for everyone to follow the advice imparted by the health authorities to protect the most vulnerable in our society. SAD NEWS SITUATION UNDER CONTROL A futher 2 persons have recovered from Covid-19, so that the number of those who have recovered has increased to 436. After 1,143 tests were carried out in the last 24 hours, 2 persons tested positive for the virus, both of whom were in contact with persons already infected with the virus. The total number of those who have been infected with Covid-19 in our country is 508. Out of these, only 66 are still active. There are 6 patients who contracted the virus who are still recovered in hospitals, whilst the others are in their homes under quarantine. The situation in Ħal Far centre is also under control, so much so that 43 persons out of 50 have recovered. 5 persons have recovered, but are still undergoing a period of 7 days in quarantine after having recovered, whilst 2 are still active.

SITUATION UNDER CONTROL

A futher 2 persons have recovered from Covid-19, so that the number of those who have recovered has increased to436. Malta classified as the European country which has increased the number of nurses between 2011 and 2019 the most.A survey by the European Union statistics office shows how, in 6 years, 2,900 nurses in 2013 have increased to 3,500in 2019. In the coming weeks, a further 162 nurses will graduate. These numbers confirm the extent to which the massiveinvestment in the health sector has not only yielded excellent results in the human resources sector, but also in themanner in which the Covid-19 spread was kept in check.

THE LARGEST INCREASE IN THENUMBER OF NURSES

Malta was praised by the World Tourism Organization for its continuous effort in the tourism sector during theCovid-19 spread so that this sector is safeguarded, and becomes even more sustainable. The Organization’sSecretary General Zurab Pololikashvili, in a letter to the Prime Minister, congratulated him on the “incredible work”and efforts being made so that the tourism sector is helped to address the challenges posed by the spread, as well asthe socio-economic impact. Through agreement with social partners, government has provided strong aid tobusinesses, such as those in the tourism sector, so that employees’ jobs, and investments made, are safeguarded.

AN €11.5 MILLION SCHEMEAPPROVED

The European Commission approved a scheme enacted by government that allows for an expenditure of €11.5 millionto finance the production of products related to the Covid-19 transmission, amongst which are vaccines, ventilators,and protective gear. Vice President of the European Commission Margretht Vestager said that this Maltese schemeis crucial, and conforms with European frameworks, the scheme takes the form of direct grants and tax incentives tocompanies that wish to manufacture medical products and equipment during the Covid-19 transmission.

INSPECTIONS ON GATHERINGS ANDTHOSE QUARANTINED

For the second consecutive day, no one was caught in gatherings of more than 4 persons in public places. Moreover,no one was found breaching obligatory quarantine during any of the 389 inspections carried out. The appeal remainsfor one and all to be responsible and co-operate with the directives issued by the authorities.
