ST. PIUS X ENRICHED LIVING FACILITY “Caring for those who cared for us”

The special collection for retired priests, living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility, will take place the

weekend of September 24/25.

The retired priests living at the St. Pius X residence, each averaging more than 40 years of priestly ministry, can still be found praying daily for the people of our Diocese. St. Pius X enables these dedicated men to live at a facility that gives them the extra care and attention they need, while still allowing them to serve as active, fully engaged members of the community. The Catholic Church of Long Island is blessed and privileged to be able to care for its senior priests, men who have dedicated their lives to serving God and our community.

We welcome your support of this important endeavor. For more information or to donate

online go to www.drvc.org-Ways to Give or call 516-379-5210 ext 229 for more information.

FEAST OF FAITH

Doxology and Amen

“Doxology” comes from a Greek word meaning “words of praise.” The Eucharistic Prayer ends with a doxology addressed to the triune God: “Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.” It is an exclamation of praise, honor, and glory to God, reminding us that we receive everything from God through the Son, in the power of the Spirit. At the consecration, the priest held up the host and then the chalice for us to see and adore. During the doxology, the host and chalice are held up again, but this time they are held up and offered to God the Father. With the doxology, the Eucharistic Prayer ends, as it began, with words of praise addressed to the Father: truly, it is right and just to give God praise, and we assent to this in our whole-hearted acclamation, “Amen.” Never was more meaning packed into so short a word. This “Amen,” sometimes and fittingly called “the great Amen,” is our response to the entire Eucharistic Prayer. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS The 2011-12 school year at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School was opened officially with a special liturgy concelebrated by Msgr. Jeffrey Madley, Msgr. William Gill, Father Paul Dahm, Father Edward Sheridan, Father Peter Deveraj & Father Peter DeSanctis. Music was provided by the Hamptones, with Madison O’Connor, Alexia O’Brien, Harrison Downs & Nicole Leonard as lectors.

The school community of OLH is actively seeking

additional donors and sponsors for the Wellness

Center—Classroom extension. The completion of the

building, expected in late spring 2012, will depend

upon the ability of the school to raise an additional

$700,000 over the coming months. There are several

memorial opportunities available in this gymnasium-

four classroom extension. There are brochures

available at the doors of the church. Anyone wishing

to make a donation toward this effort is asked to

contact the school at 283-9140.

Pre-school is the time when 3 & 4 year olds begin the

solid foundation of their elementary education. Our

Lady of the Hamptons hosts a fully licensed program

taught by certified professional teachers at St.

Rosalie’s Parish Center in Hampton Bays. There is

still room in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Please contact the school 283-9140 for a brochure

and information leading to registration.

Father John McDonald of Ireland who helped us during the first 2 summers when I came to you (1988-89) is coming for a visit to this country. He will be arriving at my house on Saturday, September 17th. He loves to play golf—he will be available on Sunday 9/18 and Wednesday 9/21. If you can take him out to play on either or both of those days, please call the parish secretary, Suzanne, and I will call you back to set up the time and place. Many thanks—Father Ed Trench

PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS

New Words in the Liturgy of the Word

On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman Missal. This week, we continue our survey of some of the changes in the words and phrases that we will pray. The structure of the Liturgy of the Word will not change with the new translation. One change just before the Gospel is our repetition of the response, “And with your spirit,” which we made at the beginning of Mass. The beginning of the Creed will change from “We believe” to “I believe.” Two other changes you might notice will be the lines “begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father” and “by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary.” These are more direct translations of the Latin words consubstantialem and incarnatus. They replace “one in being with the Father” and “born of the Virgin Mary.” Near the end of the Creed we will pray that we “look forward to” the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting. The new translation aims to increase the joyful hope with which we pray. ______________________ September 18, 2011 In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us about the kingdom of heaven. Gospel Matthew 20:1-2, 6a, 7b-8, 10-13, 15

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said, “the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ’Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me on the usual daily wage? Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are envious because I am generous?’” The Gospel of the Lord. For Reflection: think about this quietly in your heart: How is the kingdom of heaven different from earth? Prayer: Generous God, Help us to understand your ways and lead us into your kingdom. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

September 18, 2011 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

______________________ September 23, 2011 Today we remember Saint Pio (PEE-oh) of Pietrelcina (pee-er-ril-CHEE-nuh), an Italian priest who was declared a saint in 2002. He is known for his life of prayer, works of mercy, and spiritual guidance of others. He was born Francesco, named in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, was born to Giuseppa and Grazio Forgione, peasant farmers, in the small Italian village of Pietrelcina on May 25, 1887. From his childhood, it was evident that he was a special child of God. Francesco was very devout even as a child, and at an early age felt drawn to the priesthood. He became a Capuchin novice at the age of sixteen and received the habit in 1902. Francesco was ordained to the priesthood in 1910 after seven years of study and became known as Padre Pio. On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the visible marks of the crucifixion, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of Church. The doctor who examined Padre Pio could not find any natural cause for the wounds. Upon his death in 1968, the wounds were no longer visible. In fact, there was no scaring and the skin was completely renewed. He had predicted 50 years prior that upon his death the wounds would heal. The wounds of the stigmata were not the only mystical phenomenon experienced by Padre Pio. The blood from the stigmata had an odor described by many as similar to that of perfume or flowers, and the gift of bilocation was attributed to him. Padre Pio had the ability to read the hearts of the penitents who flocked to him for confession which he heard for ten or twelve hours per day. Padre Pio used the confessional to bring both sinners and devout souls closer to God; he would know just the right word of counsel or encouragement that was needed. Even before his death, people spoke to Padre Pio about his possible canonization. He died on September 23, 1968 at the age of eighty-one. His funeral was attended by about 100,000 people.
