Stewardship Corner ~ In this week’s readings, we hear about the free will and the commandments God gifted to us. What do we know about free will and how can we apply it to living out stewardship as a way of life?

God gifted us with rationality in order that we might be dignified and able to control our own actions. He did this so that of our own accord, we could seek Him and “attain his full and blessed perfection.” We are like God because we have this rationality and this control over our acts. We are deliberate in our actions and by exercising our free will, we shape our own lives. This freedom He gave us “...is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward God..” We have the choice to do good or to do evil, and we can “do evil” merely by becoming compla-cent while knowing in our hearts what we truly should be doing.

The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the ser-vice of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to "the slavery of sin" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1733).

In the Gospel we hear a few of the commandments and how we are to obey. When you think about it,

God really was gifting us the recipe to freedom when He outlined these general principles by which to

live. How often do we feel sad or guilty because of something we’ve done, and how often is that be-

cause our choice directly conflicted with God’s gift in the commandments? He gave us free will that we

might live as humans and not as extensions of Him, but that instead, we might choose to do so and be

Christ to others around us. If we find ourselves enslaved by sin, the choice is ours to change. We will

find freedom in doing what is good and following Him- turn to Him and strive always to attain the per-

fection He desires for us.

Fr. Hamill recommends purchasing the book "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" by Joshua Harris (available as a Kindle

download).

Excerpt from Amazon.com: Joshua Harris's first book, written when he was only 21, turned the Christian singles scene upside down...and people are still talking. More than 800,000 copies later, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, with its inspiring call to sincere love, real pu-rity, and purposeful singleness, remains the benchmark for books on Christian dating. Now, for the first time since its release, the national #1 bestseller has been expanded with new content and updated for new readers. Honest and practical, it challenges cultural assumptions about relationships and provides solid, biblical alternatives to society's norm. Thank you!

Lead Me to the Cross ...where Your Love poured out.

The groundhog may have called for 6 more weeks of winter, but I, for one, am looking forward to spring!

However, before we enjoy the beautiful Easter lilies, we will all find ways to prepare ourselves for the holiest week of the liturgical year - ways to “lead us to the cross.” Some will give something up, and some will add a new layer to their faith commitment by trying to add more prayer time to their busy lives or to make a more conscious effort to serve others . Young and old will experience the feeling of sacrifice evolving into spiritual re-birth.

One great way for middle and high-schoolers to prepare themselves for the Easter season is to become involved with the Living Stations Program produced here at Sacred Heart on Good Friday evening. This year’s program will take place on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 7:00 PM in the church. Preparations begin on Thursday, March 6th, and continue through the Thursdays in Lent - excluding Holy Thursday. Meet-ings are held in the church from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. We are in need of pantomime actors, lectors and singers. Spring time schedules can often be a challenge, but we try to work around them as much as possible. Please consider joining us in producing a beautiful, reverent program depicting Our Lord’s j ourney to the cross.

If you have any questions, please contact Amy Murphy at 610-345-0428 or [email protected].

How can you share Christ’s love in the Oxford community?

Aid for Friends, a program bringing food and compan-ionship to local home-bound persons, is in need of volunteer visitors. Currently, we have four clients in need of visitors for one hour, once a week. We can promise you one of the most rewarding experi-ences of your life. Our volunteer visitors see the same client every week. They really get to know each other; forming a true and caring relationship. Some of our friends say it is one of the best friendships they’ve ever had – some volunteer visitors say the same thing. If you think you can spare an hour a week to make a tremendous difference in the life of a friend near you, please contact Dana Felder at 484.459.3433 or email [email protected].
