Feast of Our Lady of La Leche From the me that Spanish explorers established the town of St. Augus ne, FL in 1565, they brought with them a par cular devo on to the Blessed Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. On September 8 of that year, the first Mass was celebrated on these shores—the Feast of the Na vity of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary. Later, a special devo on to Nuestra Se-nora de La Leche y Buen Parto - Our Lady of the Milk and Happy Delivery also began. Since the 17th century, this devo on has been kept alive by count-less people of faith, especially as they seek out Blessed Lady’s intercession for a safe delivery of their child. In 2012, the Holy See’s Congrega on of Di-vine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments granted a pe on for a feast in honor of Our Lady of La Leche to be inserted into the local liturgical calendar of the Diocese of St. Augus ne each year on October 11 (this year it falls on Sunday). In all the parishes and ins tu ons of the diocese, this day is to be kept with due solemnity seeking Mary’s ma-ternal love upon our local church. Since the first Marian shrine in what is now the United States of America was established in the same place where that first Mass was celebrated on September 8, 1565, the Blessed Mother’s special intercession is called upon in our day as we con nue the New Evangeliza on in our me and, henceforth, into the future.

In Our Parish...

THE GIFT OF THE REIGN OF GOD Ma hew’s Gospel today expands on Isaiah’s ballad considerably. A comparison with the same story in Mark’s Gospel clearly shows us that here the author is busy teaching this community of Jewish Chris ans: “This is a story about Israel a long me ago; this is also a story about Jesus and the skep cal leaders.” Jesus as much as told these Jewish leaders that they were the tenants who first stoned their own prophets. And he told the leaders they were the tenants who would soon even dispose of him—Jesus—and, in doing so, would forfeit their privileged place of presen ng to the world the promised Messiah. “And this,” says Ma hew’s Gospel, “is a story about you, the inheritors of what was first offered to Israel.” The reign of God was first opened to Israel and is now given to the whole world, but it must be received as a gi . The first Chris ans are the new tenants in the vine-yard. The deeper reality of the reign or kingdom of God is that it is available to everyone on the face of the earth—Israel included. Sacred Heart Prayer and Healing Ministry The Prayer and Healing Ministry meets on Monday eve-nings from 7pm to 8pm, in our Church. We invite you to come and join us. During such a challenging year, we have an opportunity to get closer to the Lord. The Prayer and Healing Ministry may be one of the ways for you. You may be asking, “What do you do on Monday nights?”. We usually pray and sing hymns. If people are comfortable praying out loud, they do so. If not, they pray quietly. We normally have song books available, but because of Covid, we will be using medita ve music. If someone is in need of healing prayer for themselves or a loved one, members are available to pray. That can be done privately or in a group se ng, depending on pref-erence.
