MESSAGE FROM HEAD TEACHER

Dear Parents/Guardians/Carers As we end November, and move into December and Advent, we as a community are preparing to celebrate Christmas. In true traditional Sacred Heart fashion, hampers, giving tree, school raffle, choir singing, the tea-dance and special services and masses, ensure our pupils experience the true meaning of this festive but primarily holy time. I ask all our parents and community to encourage our children to live their faith by continuing to help those less fortunate than themselves. My hope for you is that you take time this Advent to prepare your heart for the coming of Jesus. Give generously to the school hamper appeal, bring joy to our older community members who will be joining us at our Tea Dance next week and get to know Jesus better through prayer.

Year 10 History Trip – Westminster Abbey and The National Archives –

Thursday 21st November

Our Year 10 historians are currently studying the Elizabethan Age (1558 to 1603) as part of their GCSE History studies. To help to deepen their understanding of Elizabeth’s reign the History Department organised a trip to Westminster Abbey and the National Archives. At Westminster Abbey our pupils were challenged to think about how to use we can use a building as a historical source. We were taken on an excellent tour of the Abbey, visiting the Chapter House, cloisters and tombs of Tudor monarchs. We also got to see the coronation chair – the very one used by Elizabeth I on 15th January 1559 and that is still used today! They studied the Abbeys history and considered how key features of the building show the changes Elizabeth made to religion in England. We also visited the National Archives at Kew. We were told about the huge volume of documents held at the Archives – dating from the Doomsday Book to modern political records. Our students were given an insight into the high security procedures at the Archives and were thrilled to find out they were in the safest building in the UK! We then had the opportunity to handle real Elizabethan documents, including letters written by Queen Elizabeth I herself! Our pupils then had a go at deciphering Elizabethan handwriting to try to explore the contents of primary documents from Elizabeth’s reign. The Year 10s were fantastic ambassadors to Sacred Heart School and engaged in all of the activities throughout the day. Well done!! Mme Claughton—Head of History

1-0-9 In 2-0-1-9, when I say those numbers, what comes to mind? Well unfortunately I just do this sign (of the cross) as I tell you That’s how many people have died.. 109, in 2-0-1-9 have died from Gun and violent knife crime. (At the time) A mother receives a call Her ringtone a deafening sound in her head As the solemn voice on the other end informs her On why her son isn’t home at 6 in the evening She runs, she sprints, (gasp) can’t breathe Her own breath choking her body as she NEEDS To see him. Her sons body. Shot in head He lays there, dead. All she can see is red as the crimson life drains from his body Like he drained the milk from the cereal his mum had made him Just. This. Morning. A boy forces in that blade He watches as the deep ruby shade stains the school shirt The boy was wearing His hands shake, he’s too late He drops to the floor, no voice to call No hope in saying “I love you” one more time He’s running OUT, of time. Each drop is a moment lost onto the already stained pavement. Drop, a mother’s face he’ll never see. Drop, a great lover he’ll never meet.

Drop, an amazing father he’ll never be. Drop, an important life that now does cease to exist... A women screams, “That was my SON, look what you’ve done? Tell me, what have you won now that I am without my baby?” The image of him laying there, her hopelessly dragging her hands through his hair. It plagues her mind. She can’t seem to find a way out of this painful Maze in which her son’s death does Continue to follow her. All she can see is that hole in his chest and A hole in the hearts of all those who are now forced to live without his; Smile, His words, His voice, all because of another boys choice? 1-0-9, 109, 10-9, how ever you say it, it’s not fine It’s crime, and yet it doesn’t seem to be worth anyone’s time? It breaks a chain of lives that would have pros-pered To break the shackles of struggles young peo-ple Already have to deal with... Mothers and fathers have to bury their young, My own MUM said “I’ll never bury my child for they have to bury me” But now that’s beginning to seem like life’s fact And yet none of us who hear and see it every-day Seem to see a problem? ‘Cause I see a huge problem with that number 1-0-9.

And special congratulations to Chelsea who also performed her poem to all the staff before school on Wednesday! Here is her poem, titled ‘109’:

Year 8 Debate There was a brilliant Year 8 debate on Tuesday organ-ised by Ms Noble, with the motion debated being whether we should abolish the rank order. The whole year group were in attendance, with members of the 6th form acting as judges. Both the proposition and opposition made convincing cases, and there were also some fantastic floor speeches and questions. Congratulations to the winning team: side ‘opposition’! Also well done to Tia Latim who won the prize for best floor speech and to all other pupils who were involved: Antonio Faulkner, Jojo Forson, Henok Tecle and Alex Tavares-Correia on side ‘opposition’ and Cristiano Alves, Christine Sombay, Elizabeth Fayemi and Miah Anderson-Dosunmu on side ‘proposition’. Well done to our judges too: Grace Makiese, Daniela Athieno Jawiloka, Mirana Claye, Bethal Abbay, Makayla Fender, Berenice Boamah and Amabel Cofie. Thanks to Sarah Darkwa and Chizzy Uka-Ugbaja for help-ing with the floor speeches.

Year 8 Poetry Workshops Students from Year 8 worked with visiting poet Aneira Roose-McClew to write their own spoken word poetry. After listening to her poem on the exam system, students chose topics they felt pas-sionate about. Using Aneira’s example, they planned how to take their audience on a journey that would start with their feelings, reveal an insight in the middle, and end in what we can all do as a result of their insight. Their cho-sen topics included family, mental health, bullying, art, athleticism, education, gaming and music. Students finished the session by reading out their favourite line from their poems:

‘I’m lost/Waiting to be found/But no one seems to be looking.’ ‘Education is important so you can strive for what you want in life/Do you think it’s a game?/Take it seriously/Rich in my mind, I ain’t never broke’. ‘Art is great, thoughtful, needed, and if you fail the first few times remember to try it again.’ ‘What comes to your head when I say games?/People sitting down for hours staring at a screen/Or maybe hiding away from society./It’s cruel they say it turns your eyes square/That is just not true.’ ‘When I say family what do you think? /Annoying little brothers and sisters obsessed with pink?/ We don’t treat family like they’re supposed to be treated/Family is amazing, nothing can beat it.’ ‘A tumour of paranoid depression.’ ‘The plan was set/We could have met/Coming home from school, like a bullet through my head/Those four words: he’s gone, he’s dead.’

Physical Theatre Workshops Students from Y9 - 12 took part in a series of Physical Theatre Drama workshops in which they explored their fears in an ever changing, hos-tile world and discussed what they would like to change if they had the chance. They worked with professional playwright Jennifer Farmer, Di-rector Seta White and Choreographer Akeim Toussaint Buck to produce mini scenes set on a double-decker bus in London. These scenes and ideas generated through discussion will be used to produce a piece of musical theatre called NOT US which centres around five young people and what it is to be a young person from a BAMER background in to-day's world, with the continued growth of the far-right and widespread justification of racism and xenophobia. On 16 December the students involved will be going to the Streatham Space Project to work with other schools who are also involved in the project, and perform the whole sequence for a live audience in the evening.

Year 12 /13 Graphic Novel Workshop On Tuesday afternoon a selection of Year 12 and 13 students attended a workshop hosted by graphic novel writer and artist Daniel Christie. Daniel spoke about how he produced and pub-lished his epic graphic novel The Legend of Eagle-Ras, as well as about his own upbringing and background. His message that whatever your circumstances or background you can achieve was very inspiring! Students then designed their own graphic novel characters and storylines which they shared with Daniel. A selection of their work can be seen below!

Harper Collins Publishing Careers Presentation On Wednesday afternoon, Year 11 English sets 1-3 enjoyed a presentation, talk and Q and A session with a range of professionals from leading publishers Harper Collins. The talk enabled pupils to gain a better understanding of the wide range of careers that ex-ist within the publishing industry. After school pupils in other year groups were also able to meet with the representatives from Harper Collins and gain their own insights into publishing. All in all a very illuminating afternoon!

On Wednesday 20th November Ms Trustman and Ms Hetherington hosted a “Conversation Station” at Theatre Peckham following their production of “Extremism” by An-ders Lustgarten. This hard hitting play is billed as “A play about fear, friendship and the creeping polarisation of our society”. The action centres around a pupil being questioned related to the Government’s Prevent strategy but covered issues such as bullying, religious tolerance and gender equality. Eden, Layla and Seun from Year 11 saw the play and joined the conversation afterwards with members of the public. The students made thoughtful and considered contributions to a very lively discussion. For parents interested in further information about the Prevent strategy, I have included some

information below
