SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD

Pope Francis issued the Apostolic Letter motu proprio Ape-ruit illis on September 30, 2019, establishing that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, celebrated yearly between Janu-ary 21-27, be observed also as the “Sunday of the Word of God.” Building upon the legacy of both the Dogmatic Con-stitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum (1965), and Pope Benedict XVI’s Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini (2010), the Holy Father’s initiative seeks to continually foster the Church’s love of Sacred Scripture while strengthening its efforts in catechesis, evangelization, and ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. The Pope offers some suggestions on how a diocese or par-ish community could observe the Sunday of the Word of God (no. 3):

The various communities will find their own ways to mark this Sunday with a cer-tain solemnity. It is important, however, that in the Eucharistic celebration the sa-cred text be enthroned, in order to focus the attention of the assembly on the normative value of God’s word. On this Sunday, it would be particularly appropriate to high-light the proclamation of the word of the Lord and to emphasize in the homily the honor that it is due. Bishops could cele-brate the Rite of Installation of Lectors or a similar commissioning of readers, in order to bring out the importance of the procla-mation of God’s word in the liturgy. In this regard, renewed efforts should be made to provide members of the faithful with the training needed to be genuine proclaimers of the word, as is already the practice in the case of acolytes or extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Pastors can also find ways of giving a Bible, or one of its books, to the entire assembly as a way of showing the importance of learning how to read, appreciate and pray daily with sacred Scripture, especially through the practice of lectio divina.

The USCCB maintains two websites related to the Bible: USCCB.org/bible provides the daily Mass readings and other reflections, and Catholic.bible contains additional resources for this new observance, focusing on the role of the Word of God in prayer, in ecumenical initiatives, in catechesis, and in the liturgy. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Col 3:16), not just for one Sunday but in every moment of life.

Our young singers rehearse and perform their annual series of performances and will appear this season in LA Opera’s Play of Daniel at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Also on the horizon for this highly acclaimed choir of children and youth from throughout the San Gabriel Valley is their 6th tour of Ita-ly and singing for Papal Mass in Rome. MASS & ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Do you know someone who is facing surgery, or an elderly person or child who is sick? You are encouraged to bring them to the Sacred Heart Church to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. Through anointing, the grace of the Holy Spirit comforts and strengthens the soul of the sick person. The Mass is also being held in observance of the upcoming Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes on Feb 11th. The Mass is open to everyone, and you do not need to be sick to attend. Many healthy people find it fulfilling to pray alongside the sick.

With mass shootings, natural disasters, and the social cli-mate today, our children are living in a world that can be very scary at times. Children who have suffered from trau-ma, through abuse, loss, or another tragedy, may have dif-ferent ways of viewing the world through the distorted lens of their fears and worries, and often need the help of trusted adults to guide them through their emotions. Many children use denial as their first coping method, so getting them to talk about what’s happened and explore how they’re feeling and what scares them now is important. Consider consulting someone with expertise in child development – a psycholo-gist, counselor or experienced teacher might have sugges-tions as to how best to support a child in the aftermath of a frightening experience.
