Baidyanath group, in 2008. They have known eachother for eight years as friends. They got marriedin a private ceremony in Langkawi, Malaysia.

FOUNDER OF HOTMAIL

y After a brief stint at Apple, Sabeer joined a startup companycalled Firepower Systems Inc, where he spent two years. In1994, Sabeer started working on new ideas for the Internetand he teamed up with Jack Smith, a colleague from AppleComputer, Inc.

y The two came up with the concept of a web-based databaseentitled Java soft. While pursuing this idea, they subsequentlyrealized the potential of a web-based e-mail system and thusdecided to create one called Hot Mail (the uppercase lettersspelling out HTML - the language used to write the base of awebpage).In order to attract attention, the e-mail service wasprovided for free and revenue was obtained through theadvertising on the website. Draper Fisher Ventures invested$300,000 on the project and the service was launched on July4, 1996.

y Sabeer Bhatia is a pioneer in the field of web-basedemail, having co-founded Hotmail Corp. -- which today

boasts more than 220 million registered users -- in 1996.

y After Microsoft acquired the company in 1998, Bhatia

moved on to new projects, including Arzoo.com, anonline travel services company for Indian consumers,InstaColl, which offers web-based office tools, andSabseBolo, an audio-conferencing platform fordeveloping markets.

y He and Jack Smith, a former Apple colleague,worked together on Java soft.

y By the end of the year, Hotmail had one millionsubscribers. The following year, Microsoft bought the

company -- which had been started with a $300,000investment only eighteen months earlier -- for $400million.

ABOUT THE BUSINESS

y Bhatia took a job with Microsoft until April 1999,when he started Arzoo Inc., which didn't survive thedissipation of the dotcom bubble.

y He's been involved in a number of ventures sincethen, including Live Documents -- which, just asHotmail shifted email activity to the web, shiftsMicrosoft Office-like activity online, allowing users

to share or collaborate on documents, them andwork from different machines. Live Documentspremiered in November of 2007.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Live Documents is another recent inventionthat causes Bhatia to enthuse: Itsphenomenal. It has the entire Microsoft

Office suite, which you can use online likeGoogle Docs, but without any of thelimitations. Thats a huge market becauseMicrosoft generates $25 billion annually and

by selling that project we can go after themdirectly by offering the same thing at a muchlower price.
