completedtheBystanderInitiativePeerFacilitatorprogram.IntroductionIt is suggested that the Peer Facilitators for the Bystander Initiative, participating in an extra-curricular capacity,satisfythecriteriaofasignificant,non-credit,academicactivity.Theestimatedtimecommitmentandthelearningoutcomes are described below, as submitted by the Bystander Initiative Coordinator fromWomen’s andGenderStudies. The Bystander Initiative Coordinator will be the University of Windsor faculty member responsible forverifyingthatthelearningoutcomeshavebeensuccessfullysatisfiedbyeachcandidate.BackgroundOverthepasttwoacademicyears(2014-2015and2015-2016),theBystanderInitiativePeerFacilitatorprogramhasbeenrunatWindsorLawasacomponentofProfessorTanovich’sfirstyearcriminallawclass.StudentsinProfessorTanovich’s class who participated were required to attend four days of training inMarch and then to submit areflectiveessaywhichwasworthatotalof25%oftheirfinalgradeinthecourse.Approximately20studentswerepermittedtoparticipateeachyear.Asmallnumberofstudentsoverthepasttwoyears(approximately3)whowerenot inProfessorTanovich’sclassvolunteeredtoparticipateasPeerFacilitatorsaswellonapurelyextra-curricularbasis.Itwasanticipated that studentswhocompleted theMarchworkshopandwrote the reflectivepaperasapartofProfessor Tanovich’s class would continue with the final stage of training, to be held the following August, andwouldthenruntheBringing intheBystanderworkshopswiththefollowingyear’s firstyear lawcohort. However, there were students who completed theMarch training and reflective paper and, thus, obtained the academiccoursecredit,butdidnotgoontocompletetheentirePeerFacilitatorprocess(approximatelyonehalftotwo-thirdsofparticipantsdroppedoutoftheprogrambeforecompletingthefinalpartofthetraining).Thisacademicyear,theLawSchoolseekstocontinuetohavestudentsparticipateinthePeerFacilitatortraininginorder to continue the peer lead Bystander Initiative workshops in the next academic year. However, the PeerFacilitator trainingprogram isnot includedaspartof the curriculum in any course this year. Thus, studentswhovolunteertobePeerFacilitatorswilldosoonanextra-curricularbasis.TheprimaryadvantageofofferingthePeerFacilitatorprogramonanextra-curricularbasisisthatitcanbeopeneduptoanystudentwhereas,forthepasttwoyears,participationwaspredominantlyrestrictedtostudentswhowereinProfessorTanovich’sfirstyearcriminallawclass.Accordingly,itisproposedthatstudentswhovolunteertoparticipateinthetrainingandactasPeerFacilitatorsforthe Bystander Initiative on an extra-curricular basis receive a transcript notation on their academic transcript inorder to recognize this significant commitment and contribution. Studentswould only be awarded the transcriptnotation iftheycompletedallstagesoftheBystander InitiativePeerFacilitationtraining.Thus,anotherbenefitofthisarrangementisthatitwouldhopefullypreventpotentialdrop-outoftheprogrambetweentheMarchtraining(partonedescribedbelow)andthefinaltraining(parttwodescribedbelow).
