The Positives of Social Media Social media are sites that allow people to communicate using text,

pictures, and videos Social media sites allow you to communicate with other people, even

though you may not know them personally It is a great way for you to meet new people It is the fastest and most convenient way people receive their news You can use social media to promote positive things like fundraisers or

events that are happening in your community You can use it to share opinions

The Dangers of Social MediaSome of the dangers of social media are: Cyber bullying

When someone uses any Social Media site to bully someone else by sending them insulting messages or threats

Young people are being bullied all the time on social media Hackers or Predators

People trying to hack (break into/take over) your account They can be anyone They could be someone trying to get you to do something

bad or illegal Privacy

The social media company owns everything you post Once you’ve posted something online it is impossible to

take it off You can delete a post but there are always ways to get it

back People who can see your posts can forward them to

anyone

If You Are Being Cyber Bullied… Don’t talk back or insult the cyberbully, because you become a cyberbully too. Block them Screen shot any offensive messages so you have proof if you need to report

them Tell a trusted adult what is happening, they can help you If they keep harassing you, change your username or email address Report the bully to the social media site because they can prevent the bully

from using that site If the bully is threatening you, contact the police

If You Are Cyberbullying… STOP When you cyberbully someone,

you are hurting them and you could get suspended or even go to jail

Think about why you were cyberbullying that person, did they hurt you, is something going on in your life that caused you to take it out on another person

Talk to a trusted adult to get help and find a solution that doesn’t involve cyberbullying or hurting other people

Tell that person that you’re sorry, face to face and online

Before you post something take a few seconds to make sure the message isn’t offensive to anyone

If Someone has Hacked your Social Media Account… Tell all your contacts, friends, or followers to ignore any posts or

messages they get from you If you can’t get into you account because they changed your

password, contact the social media site and follow their steps. To help prevent your account from being hacked:

Keep your password private, tell them only to a trusted adult Use strong passwords with capital letters and numbers in them, and don’t

use the same password for everything Change your password every few months

Keeping Your Account Private When you sign up for a social media account, they may have optional

spaces for address, age, school, phone number, etc. Leave those spaces empty.

Don’t post every little thing that’s happening in your life Don’t post any personal information like your address or phone

number Don’t “follow” or “friend” someone you don’t know Check your privacy settings to make sure that your account is private

and that only people that you “friend” or “follow” can see what you post
