Ask, and it

shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Matthew 7:7 KJV

Community UCC took this verse seriously in Feb 2012 when we wrote down the dreams we each had for our church on snowflakes made out of paper, what have come to be known as our “Snowflake Dreams” (a copy of our Snowflake Dreams can be found on our website, www.communityucc.net ).

On the original list there were a number of dreams of various wording asking God to help bring unity and harmony to our church. I believe God is answering those dreams in ways and to a depth we never expected.

In October 2012, the pastor at Scwarzwald UCC, Rev. John Dawson came to me to see if I felt our church would consider a “Partnership in Ministry” between Scwarzwald and Community UCC. Rev. Dawson and I agreed to call a meeting of both churches’ Presidents, Vice Presidents and

Treasurers to see if there was an interest in going forward to discuss the possibility. The meeting took place at the end of October with a unanimous vote for both churches to move forward with the discussion.I then met with our search committee to explain to them the general outline of what had happened and asked if they would be willing to put their search on hold until December which would give both consistories a chance to consider this idea and vote whether or not to continue discussions. The search committee members in attendance voted unanimously to suspend the search to allow this conversation to take place.

On Monday Nov. 12, Schwarzwald’s consistory voted unanimously to continue on with the discussion and on Tuesday Nov. 20 Community’s consistory voted unanimously to continue on with the discussion. A letter will be emailed to every member of our church outlining the process that will take place which will include an opportunity for members of both churches to gather, ask questions and discuss possibilities. For now, below is the initial document that each consistory has approved.

Please be in an attitude of prayer as you read the attached document and then write down every question you can think of that we need to consider as we seek God’s guidance for the ministry of Community and Schwarzwald UCC. God is certainly a God of surprises!

See you in church, Pastor Deb

A Partnership in Ministrybetween

Schwarzwald United Churches of Christ located in Jacksonwald Pennsylvaniaand

Community United Church of Christ located in St. Lawrence, Pennsylvania

OBJECTIVE: By working together, at all levels of each congregation, both congregations are seeking to increase the effectiveness of their efforts at ministering to their members and the communities they seek to serve in Jesus’ name.

MEANS: Through this partnership between the leadership, administrations, and organizations of each congregation, the cooperative efforts being developed shall seek to “Do together what we cannot do alone.”

STRUCTURE: 1) Each congregation, in seeking pastoral leadership, will include the concept of a partnership as a part of each congregation’s profile.

2) Each congregation’s administrative bodies will include the question as to how any of its planning and/or decisions will affect the life and ministries of the other congregation as wells as whether and how the proposed projects can be better done together than separately.

3) There shall be a Ministries Council, composed of five (5) representatives from each congregation; that shall function as a “hub” through which the concerns of both the congregations and the pastors shall be shared. The purpose of this sharing shall be to find reasonable suggestions for dealing with the ideas and concerns presented; a place to float “trial balloons” before they are presented to the administrations of each congregation.

4) Nothing proposed by the Ministries Council can be implemented until and unless both consistories and/or Congregation Meetings agree

5) The work of the Ministries Council shall be advisory and supportive of the Pastors and the Administrative Bodies of both congregations.

6) The Pastors shall work together as a “Team,” seeking to enhance each other’s ministries. They shall meet at least bi-weekly for planning and evaluation of their efforts. For example, whenever one pastor visits in the hospitals, he or she will do everything in their power to visit all of the hospitalized parishioners of both congregations.

7) The Ministries Council will seek to provide opportunities for both pastors to become known as “our pastor” in both congregations.

IMPLEMENTATION: This Partnership shall be deemed if effect when adopted by the Administrative Bodies of both congregation, and shall remain in effect for at least 2 years, after which time, either congregation’s Administrative bodies may, by a majority vote, decide to opt out of the alliance.

On 11/12/12, the Schwarzwald Consistory unanimously recommended proceeding with the development of the partnership. On 11/20 the Community Consistory also unanimously recommended proceeding with the development of this partnership.

How Community UCC Got their Grand Piano

As a piano tuner, I get many different kinds of requests concerning pianos. There are probably enough stories to fill a complete “novel.” Recently I’ve been prepping and tuning pianos for people that were donating their pianos to various charities and schools. As I was working on some of these really nice pianos, I kept thinking about how wonderful it would be if one were donated to Community UCC. Then one day late in October the call came that clinched a beautiful Yamaha grand piano for us!

An owner of a local business and his wife liked to go to “storage wars”, where they would bid on abandoned storage lockers. One of his secretaries informed me that they had bid on a locker which contained two pianos and about 35 piano benches. They had no idea what to do with the items and really wanted them out of the locker by the end of the month. My curiosity was peaked and I agreed to go take a look. I was really taken back when I saw the Yamaha (all wrapped up) and asked the secretary what they had in mind. She said that at this point they would be happy to donate the contents to a good cause, and I thought, what better cause than Community UCC!

A quick call to Sam verified that we would pay to move it. But then a roadblock…they wanted it removed before Nov. 1 and I also had to agree to take the benches. The best I could do was to hire a piano mover for Nov. 2. They agreed. Community now has its grand, a Christian school in Pottstown has an upright for their chapel and I feel like the east coast distributor of piano benches. You might see some of those at the white elephant on Dec. 1.

Thank you, Eric and Chantelle Stankiewicz for this amazing gift.

Thank you, Tammy and Barry Naus for coordinating all this.

Thank you Robert Seiler (RHS Movers) for helping us with the move at a moment’s notice.

Thank you, Gina and Sam for helping to make this happen in such a short time. We are blessed!

Chancel Choir to Present Cantata on Dec. 23.The Chancel Choir will present the cantata “Go Tell It!’ on Sunday morning, Dec. 23 at 10:15. The cantata includes narration presented by Karen and Mike Walulek, solos, some familiar Christmas carols and congregational participation. Come join us and celebrate this joyous season.

Blue Christmas ServiceHelping hurting people cope with the holidays.

The holiday season is not joyful for everyone. For many, this season is filled with difficult times, humps to get over, gatherings to endure, varieties of pressures and a flood of memories that darken and dampen the days. During this service we will sing and pray as we move from solemn to hopeful. Join us for worship on Thursday, December 20 at 6:30pm

Prayer Group and Prayer Chain

Do you want to make prayer a regular part of your life? Practice is the best way to get into the habit of prayer. Interested members gather on the second Wednesday of the month for prayer from 6:30-7:30pm in an upstairs classroom. Join us on Wednesday, December 12. We will be using the ACTS model for prayer: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. The Prayer Chain is used when someone has an urgent prayer need. Pastor Deb or Gina usually activates the Prayer Chain. The prayer request passes from one person to the other. Each person takes a few minutes to pray when they receive the request.

Care will be provided for children ages birth thru kindergarten in the library upstairs at the 10:15 service. All parents will be required to fill out a registration form the first time the child is in nursery.  All information supplied on this form will remain confidential.

Wellness Policy: If your child has a fever, diarrhea, or just doesn't seem well, we do kindly ask that you not bring your child to nursery that week.

Adult volunteers: I will be in search of adults over the age of 18 to help in the nursery during church service. There will always be someone in with you the entire time.  Please sign up on the volunteer form that will be hanging on the downstairs church bulletin board.Any questions please contact, Tania Dierksheide-Nursery Coordinator 610-223-1463.

You may have noticed the Christmas tree in the downstairs lobby. Each year the preschool “adopts” families in need. This mission project provides our little ones with the opportunity to help others less fortunate. We hope to be a blessing to three families who are all in extremely difficult circumstances at this time. All three families are dealing with serious medical issues that have left them fallen on hard times. Please keep our “Adopt –a-Families” in your prayers.

The preschool staff wishes you and your family a very, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Reconsider the Rush

The Christmas rush leads to stress for many people. But author Burton Hills viewed the madness from another perspective:

“Eventually, the hour comes when the rushing ends and the race against the calendar mercifully comes to a close. It is only now, perhaps, that we truly recognize the spirit of Christmas. It is not a matter of days or weeks, but of centuries — [more than] twenty of them now since that holy night in Bethlehem. Regarded in this manner, the pre-Christmas rush may do us greater service than we realize. With all its temporal confusion, it may just help us to see that by contrast, Christmas itself is eternal.”

A Time to Give

A miser must have a wretched time at Christmas, for Christmas is preeminently a time of generosity. God set the example when he gave his own Son; the wise men followed it when they gave their gold to the Christ child; and in proportion to our share of the Christmas spirit, we are walking in their footsteps. —John T. Faris

The Art of Christmas

How can we best keep Christmas?

• By following the star on an inward journey to Bethlehem to stand again in awe and wonder before the Babe in a manger. • By rediscovering the faith and simplicity of a little child, for of such is the kingdom of heaven. • By being still and listening to the angels sing within our hearts. • By quietly evaluating our lives according to the Master’s standards as set forth in the Sermon on the Mount. • By resolving to give ourselves away to others in love, joy and devotion.

The Christmas Fund (For the Veterans of the Cross and the Emergency Fund)

In this holy season, as we share gifts with our loved ones, we are reminded of the ultimate gift we have received – God’s great gift to humankind, Jesus Christ, the promised Savior. In Jesus, the fullness of God’s love is revealed, a love that reconciles us with God and with one another, bringing hope and healing to a broken world.

For 110 years, the Christmas Fund for the Veterans of the Cross and the Emergency Fund has been a way in which we – as members of the United Church of Christ and the predecessor denominations from which our beloved Church was born – bring hope to those who have so faithfully and selflessly served. The Christmas Fund, one of four Special Mission Offerings received annually in the United Church of Christ, is a way in which we share with others from the fullness that we have received.

How are the Funds are Used? The generous gifts of UCC congregations and individuals to the Christmas Fund enabled the Pension Boards’ Ministerial Assistance program to provide the following gifts:

Some form of Ministerial Assistance will be provided to approximately 1,600 persons during 2012.

- Christmas Gift checks were sent to approximately 900 persons in 2011. Of those who received checks, 20 are over 100 years of age. The oldest person is 107. One person has received Christmas checks continuously since 1976. The 900 gifts total $270,000.

- Monthly pension supplementation is being provided to 397 persons. These gifts total $110,164.90 per month. A significant part of annual total of $1,255,885.20 comes from the Christmas Fund. (2012 data)

- Quarterly health premium supplementation is being provided to 242 families, totaling $146,489.30 per quarter. All of the funding for health premium supplementation is derived from the Christmas Fund. (2012 Data)

- Emergency Grants totaling $32,897.12 were provided to 26 individuals and families from January 1 through September 30,212.

These statistics reflect annualized projections as of September 30, 2012. The numbers of persons receiving assistance and the totals of assistance payments fluctuate on a monthly basis. This offering will be collected Sunday, December 23, 2013.Mission Moments will be presented December 2, 9, & 16th.

Thank you in advance for your support of the essential mission in the life of our church.

Hopes and Fears

Sacred Christmas carols are a cherished tradition. But during sorrow and struggle, some lyrics may seem hard to swallow. “O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant”? Where is the joy when my loved one has just died? Where is the triumph if I’ve lost my job? “Silent night, holy night, all is calm …”? Not in my house; I’m exhausted from the fighting. Yet ... listen:

And you beneath life’s crushing load,Whose forms are bending low … Oh, rest beside the weary roadAnd hear the angels sing.

—“It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”

Truly, God reaches out to the happy and hurting alike. “The hopes and fears of all the years are met” — and gathered up — in the Babe of Bethlehem, who shares our joys and troubles. There are Christmas carols for us all.

Holy Paradox

God became a man. Divinity arrived. Heaven opened herself and placed her most precious one in a human womb. The omnipotent, in one instant, became flesh and blood. The one who was larger than the universe became a microscopic embryo. And he who sustains the world with a word chose to be dependent upon the nourishment of a young girl. God had come near.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, You are invited to join us at Mensch Mill Retreat and Conference Center for two special days as we gather together to honor the joyful and sacred moments we have spent at Mensch Mill and to support each other as we continue our journey with God as our guide.    Saturday, January 5, 2013 there will be a "Prayerful Walkabout" at Mensch Mill

As we have so often in the past, we will gather together at the Mill in the morning between 8:30 and 9:00 am with hot beverages and pastries. Between 9 and 11:30 am, we will prayerfully walk around Mensch Mill to various meaningful areas. There will be special activities of remembrance and prayer at each area. At noon we will gather in the Mill for a simple lunch. During the early afternoon, there will be a number of optional activities:

Making a terrarium using nature items from Mensch Mill (Everyone

participating in this activity is asked to bring a jar. Basic terrarium materials and instruction are available for a cost of $20.)

Engaging in the Challenge Course   Taking a Hike and/or Spending Free Time sharing with others, connecting and re-connecting

Around 3 pm, we will meet at a campfire to share, pray together, sing together, and end the day's events.

Saturday, February 16, 2013 we will gather at the Kline Center for a Closing Worship

We will gather at 3 pm for the closing worship, followed by Dinner and a Fellowship time at 5 pm. After dinner, there will be Evening Vespers around the campfire.

You are invited to join us for one or both of these activities. More detailed information will be coming soon, but we wanted you to know that planning is currently "in the works" so that you can SAVE THE DATES on your calendar! Blessings of awe and wonder as we wait together, anticipating the celebration of the incarnation of Christ in ways that we have experienced in the past, as well as ways that we may have never asked or imagined! In God's peace,Mike Lenhart, Acting Director, Mensch Mill Retreat and Conference CenterRev.
