Spiritual Foundation for Baptism

Requirements:There is only one requirement for baptism – that you know Jesus and profess that he died for your sins and you want to live for him!

Our Church’s Criteria:1. Consider Faith your home church.2. 10 years old or older (see below under “Who should be baptized?” If you have

questions about this, please contact John and Pam Marks at (970) 226-0921).

Baptism Basics: What we believe about baptism and why.

1. Baptism does not save us. Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For by grace you have been saved, through faith ... it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Titus 3:5 – “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy ....”

2. Baptism testifies that you are united with Jesus in his death and resurrection.1 Cor. 15:3-4 – “Christ died for our sins ... he was buried ... and he was raised on the third day.” Col. 2:12 – “having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.”

3. Baptism illustrates your new life as a Christian. 2 Cor. 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away; the new has come.” Romans 6:4 – “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”

When should I be baptized?

As soon as you meet Jesus!Acts 2:41 – “Those who received his word were baptized ... that day.” Acts 16:32-33 – “They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house ... And he was baptized at once, he and all his family.”

If you didn’t get baptized when you first met Jesus, it is never too late! Sharing your love for God and commitment to follow Him is a step of faith every believer should take at some point in his/her life, no matter when it is.

Who should be baptized?

Every person who has trusted in Jesus as their Savior!Acts 2:41 – “Those who received his word were baptized ...” Acts 8:12 – “But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.”

The one and only requirement that the Bible sets forth for baptism is belief in Jesus Christ. For this reason we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the meaning of baptism before we baptize them.

Why be baptized?

1. To follow the example set by Jesus. Mark 1:9 – “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.”

2. Because Jesus asked us to. Matthew 28:19-20 – “Jesus said, ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you ....’”

3. It demonstrates that I really am a believer. Acts 18:8 – “... many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.” 1 John 2:3 – “We know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.”

Sharing Your StorySharing your story is a crucial part of baptism at Faith. You get to share how you met Jesus and how he has been at work in your life, and your church family gets to celebrate alongside you.

Options for Sharing Your Story

1) Testimony video (more info on page 6)2) Live testimony from the baptism tank

The choice is totally up to you! Some people don’t mind sharing their testimony live in front of people while others would prefer to have the safety of a video retake. Either way, it’s really just about sharing who Jesus is in your life.

Preparing your testimonyHere are the three questions you’ll be asked either live or on camera:

1) How did you come to trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?2) What has Jesus been teaching you recently?3) Why do you want to be baptized today?

We recommend that you write or type out exactly what you want to say ahead of time. Practice speaking in your own words and be yourself!

The goal of your testimony is simply to share your faith story with your church family. They are excited for you and want to hear what Jesus has done in your life!

Be encouraged as you prepare your testimony – there is a whole family of people ready to cheer you on and celebrate God’s work in your life together.

What to Wear to Your Baptism Jeans, slacks, athletic pants or capris The “Faith” t-shirt we give you Bare feet, tennis shoes, sandals or socks (no Crocs or flip flops please) A nametag (you’ll be given this the day of your baptism) on your right shoulder Please do not wear glasses, bathing caps, wigs, watches, or other personal

items in the water. (You can hand your glasses to a volunteer just before entering the tank.)

What to Bring A change of clothes and shoes in a duffel/sports bag Towel(s) Plastic bag for wet clothes Hair dryer (if desired)

Where to Go Use the south backstage door (by the church offices) and a volunteer will be

there to meet you. They’ll show you the changing rooms and the best place to sit during the worship service. You are welcome to sit with family and friends during the worship service. The best spot is in the front of the Worship Center, right by the baptism tank.

What to Expect During the Service At the designated time during the worship service (usually at the end), the pastor

will introduce baptism and your video will begin showing on the screens. While your video is showing, walk up on stage and into the baptism tank.

Once your video is finished, the pastor will ask you: “Do you believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and acknowledge him as your Lord?” Answer with “yes” or “I do” or another verbal affirmation.

The pastor will say: “Upon your confession of your faith and in obedience tot the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

You will get “dunked” as previously instructed Your church family will celebrate! While people are still clapping, you can exit the

tank and proceed to the changing area backstage. If there is still time in the worship service, you can rejoin the congregation after you change.

Two Quick Scheduling Notes: If you requested a particular pastor to baptize you, we hope to be able to

accommodate your request, but we cannot guarantee that he will be available for your baptism.

We look for a balance of baptisms between our morning services. Although we cannot guarantee the time of your baptism, we will try our best to accommodate your preference.

What to expect We keep it as relaxed as possible! A volunteer will ask you questions about your faith

story on camera and you will answer. Our best advice? Answer like you are having a 1-on-1 conversation with someone.

There may be other people with you getting their testimonies filmed, too. Take some time to get to know each other and share your stories. (It’s great practice!)

Typically filming your testimony takes no more than 30 minutes, but occasionally we will be adjusting lighting and sound and it will take longer.

What to wear to filming day Wear something modest that you are comfortable in. We film against a white

background and the congregation will see you from your mid-section up on camera. Solid colors often work best. It is also best to avoid pastels, shiny material and

patterns that may play tricks on the eyes.

What to bring to filming day Any notes you need to remember the main points of your testimony Yourself and your smile! Your video will be awesome if you just be yourself, show

your personality, and speak in your own words.
