- This week, we would like you to look at Sports Commentaries. Think about your favourite sport on TV and how the commentators report on what is happening, how do they show their emotions through their voice? How do they communicate the action of the game or match to the audience?

- Watch these two short videos on sports commentary with dogs ‘Olive and Mabel’ ‘The Dog’s Breakfast Grand Final’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPhpJuraz14 ‘Game of bones’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2BZNowCXws Jot down some of the phrases you hear being used that tell the audience what is happening in an exciting way e.g. “And here they go! Olive away first!”

- Using this video on high diving giraffes https://www.literacyshed.com/diving-giraffes.html, we would like you to have a go at writing your own sports commentary piece for the giraffes – think about the following features of sports commentary:

- Opening – similar to 5W’s

- Informal language

- Adjectives

- Adverbs to describe what is happening e.g. she dives gracefully

- Time adverbials e.g. First, next

What effects should a good sports commentary have on the listener/reader?

- They should feel excited

- Should make them want to read/ listen on

- Makes them feel like they are there

- Allows them to empathise with the sports men/women

We have uploaded the start of an example giraffe diving commentary text and a template to help you begin your writing. These can be found on the school website with the other Year 5 resources.

Spelling

This week, we have uploaded a spelling crossword challenge for you to have a go at. Use the clues given to complete the crossword then check your answers and that you have spelt them correctly afterwards – no peeking! Crossword challenge 1 is all ‘double consonant words’ - Good luck!

When you have checked your spellings are correct in the crossword, we would like you to practise writing these out in your neatest, cursive handwriting in your home learning book. You could also try writing some of the words in different colours, bold letters, capitals or bubble writing to help you remember them!

Life Cycles

Week 1 - Plant Lifecycles – Asexual Reproduction/Taking Cuttings

- We’ve now looked at all the stages in the lifecycle of plants that reproduce sexually. Some plants do not reproduce this way and this is known as asexual reproduction or vegetative propagation. Look through the PowerPoint to find out the different ways this can occur and examples of plants which reproduce this way.

- Have a go at making new plants from one parent plant. If you are successful, each plant that grows will be a clone of the parent plant! This means it will be genetically identical to the parent plant. Follow the

Page 3: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com€¦ · Web viewWe would love to see pictures of these on Twitter! Read the text ‘UEFA Football Commentary’ and answer the comprehension questions,

instructions on Taking Cuttings Activity Sheet (on the website) to try to make new geranium plants. You could also use a mint plant. Complete the activity sheet with your explanation of how you will make new plants. Tweet a photo of your cuttings!

Week 2 – Human Lifecycles

- Use the Human Lifecycle PowerPoint and the explanation text (on the school website) to find out about the different stages of the human lifecycle. Watch the video clip: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgssgk7/articles/z2msv4j

- Use the information gained to create a diagram of a human lifecycle. You can use the pictures (found at the bottom of this plan) to cut and stick an image of each stage or draw them. Make sure you label each stage (e.g. foetus, baby etc.), add the age for each stage (e.g. 0-2) and make brief notes about each stage.

Topic

Week 1 – Maya Houses

This week, we would like you to have a look at Maya houses and buildings. Watch this video based on the TV programme Grand Designs https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ks3-what-did-maya-houses-and-buildings-look-like/zbjvrj6 which talks about building design, tools used and interesting or even bizarre features of the buildings!

Using the video for inspiration and your own research on Maya houses, we would like you to design and label your own Maya house! What special features will it? What materials will you use? Who would be your target market if you were selling the house? What similarities and differences does your Maya house have to your own in modern day?

Week 2 - The City of Chichén Itzá

Your Maya house may once have been a building in the city of Chichén Itzá - large Mayan city famous for a large, pyramid temple built by the Maya civilization.

This week, using the KS2 Mayan Civilization Chichén Itzá Fact File (found with the other Year 5 resources), this wesbite https://kids.kiddle.co/Chichen_Itza and your own research create a Top Trumps card or fact file about Chichén Itzá. Include a drawing of one of the famous landmarks and interesting facts and figures about the city. Alternatively, following your research on Chichén Itzá, film a video pretending you are a TV presenter for a travel programme trying to persuade people to visit Chichén Itzá. What is unique and interesting about it as a tourist destination? What are the ‘must-see’ sights? What information will help tourists travel in safety and comfort to the city? We would love to see your videos shared on Twitter!

French

Page 4: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com€¦ · Web viewWe would love to see pictures of these on Twitter! Read the text ‘UEFA Football Commentary’ and answer the comprehension questions,

Over the next two weeks have a go at learning the French words for parts of the body.

Use the link: https://www.french-games.net/frenchlessons?topic=Body%20-%20parts%20of%20the%20body&level=primary and begin with the FULL TUTORIAL rather than skipping straight to the Games.

- Start with the introduction, going through the vocabulary for the 10 different. Practise saying them aloud, then write the French words in your books and their English meanings.

- Then you can move onto the Games.

- Finally the Tests which are multiple choice and then writing (using the computer keyboard). Or you can practise writing out the terms in your books.

Art

Week 1

On your last Home Learning plan, we asked you to find out about the artist Gustav Klimt. Read through the slide show which can be found on the school website, which gives some information about his life and shows some of his early work.As Klimt’s early sketches featured shading of the portraits he drew, we would like you to practise some shading techniques. Watch the video clip tutorial https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zxyxfg8 and look at the Tone PowerPoint, then experiment with the different techniques by completing the ‘Shading Circles’ activity, which can be found on the website.

Week 2- Ask someone at home to pose for you and do a quick ‘outline’ sketch of them (look again at some of

Klimt’s portraits on the slide show). Then use the shading techniques looked at to add detail and tone to help make your portrait look more 3D.

Some Top Tips:

o Be gentle! Use light strokes as you draw. You can always go over light pencil strokes when you are happy with them.

o Don’t worry about making mistakes! It’s only pencil - you can rub out, or go over any marks you aren’t happy with.

o Remember, Klimt’s sketches ‘tell a story’ by making you think about

Page 5: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com€¦ · Web viewWe would love to see pictures of these on Twitter! Read the text ‘UEFA Football Commentary’ and answer the comprehension questions,

what the person is thinking, feeling or doing. You can tell a story by making the face and hands of your sketch more detailed than the rest of the body or background.

Music

- Use the BBC Bitesize Daily Lesson https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z44x6v4 to help develop your singing skills. Watch the videos on Pitch and Melody and Singing with Feeling. Then work through Activity 1 and 2.

- Activity 1 asks you to think of your favourite song at the moment, listen to it and write down how it makes you feel. Can you spot in the music what is causing that feeling? Is it the words? The melody?

- Activity 2 asks you to have a go at learning the song, ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane. There is a video of a school choir you can sing along to or you can learn the lyrics and singalong to the original here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KHJKj9GgsI

- FAME violinists, keep practising using the Charanga Yumu website.

- Remember to tweet any performances you record!

PE
