PRODUCT WARNING

All Smith & Wesson Pistols Capable of Double-Action Firing

It has come to our attention that some users of Smith &Wesson pistols capable of firing in double-action, may"stage" the trigger in anticipation of firing a shot in thedouble-action mode. "Staging" is the act of pulling thetrigger rearward toward-but just short of-the point wherethe hammer falls and the pistol fires. Suchmanipulation of the trigger can reduce the user's controlof the handgun and can result in an unintentionaldischarge. Furthermore, if the user decides not to fire, release of the trigger from a position close to the firingpoint in the "staging" process could result in a discharge.

Obviously, "staging" the trigger violates a basic rule offirearm safety which warns you to keep your finger off thetrigger and outside the trigger guard until ready to fire.

We warn all users of our pistols capable of firing indouble-action to refrain from "staging" the trigger.

PREPARATION FOR FIRING. Wear safety glasses and ear protec-

tion whether indoors or out.Select a place to shoot which has asafe backstop, is free form obstruc-tions and water surfaces which causericochets.. Always be aware of other people sothat persons cannot accidentally walkinto the line of fire.. Position the shooter and all others sothat they are not within an areawhere they may be struck by particle-splitting from a revolver or by ejectedcases from other types of firearms.. Keep fingers and other parts of yourbody away form the muzzle andslide.. When firing on a target range, bealert and follow the range officer'scommands.

. Before anyone is allowed forward ofthe firing position, be sure that allcylinders and actions of firearms areopen, that chambers are clear ofcartridges, magazines are removed, and that firearms are pointing in asafe direction.

6

. Never use alcoholic beverages orother drugs before or during shoot-ing.. Be alert at all times. Never shoot ifyou are tired, cold or impaired in anyway.. Never cross obstacles such asfences or streams with a loadedfirearm.. If you are carrying a loaded firearmin the field, keep the muzzle pointedin a safe direction.. Think before shooting.

WARNING: Never use ammunitionwhere the pressure levels exceedindustry standards. Smith & Wessonpistols are manufactured from highquality materials (aluminum or steelalloys). These frames will provideextended service life. However, + P +cartridges-whose pressures oftenexceed even factory proof-test lev-els-should never by used in thesemodels. All warranties, express orimplied, are voided and Smith &Wesson will not be liable for proper-ty damage or personal injury andconsequential damages, if thisammunition is used in these modelcenterfire pistols.

AMMUNITION. A firearm and ammunition are a

system. Their performance is closelyrelated.. Your firearm has been designed forammunition of a specific type andcaliber; do not alter the barrel orchamber of your gun.. You are responsible for selectingammunition that meets industrystandards and is appropriate for thisfirearm. Use only commerciallymanufactured ammunition withinternal ballistic pressures which arein strict accordance with the specifi-cations of the Sporting Arms andAmmunition Manufacturers' Institute.Never use non-standard, reloaded, or"hand loaded" ammunition which hasnot been subjected to internalballistic pressure testing.Ammunition, especially reloaded orhand loaded ammunition, may havemany manufacturing and qualityvariables (such as the type andamount of gun powder). Anyammunition that is improperlymanufactured, even in the slightestdegree, may fail to fire or may gener-ate excessive internal pressureswhich can damage or even rupturethe firearm, causing personal injuryto the shooter or those in theimmediate vicinity.. Use only ammunition specificallyrecommended by Smith & Wessonfor your firearm. Never mixammunition.. Never use a cartridge not specificallydesigned for use in your firearm.Excessive pressure can damage oreven blow up any firearm.. Periodically check the barrel breech,

slide, and frame ares for erosion, cracks, or other signs of excessivewear.. Locate the caliber designationprinted on the barrel chamber of yourpistol. This information indicates theammunition caliber that should beused in this firearm.. If your firearm fails to fire when thehammer fails (misfires), keep thefirearm pointed in a safe direction, remove your finger from the trigger,do not place your hand around theejection port, wait 10 seconds, remove the cartridge from thechamber and dispose of it properly.. If you have heard an unusual soundor felt an unusual recoil on firing, stop firing, wait 10 seconds, unloadthe firearm, and examine the barrelbore for obstructions.. Make sure your barrel is clear andfree of obstructions. If you see anobstruction, return your firearm toSmith & Wesson or take it to aqualified gunsmith. INSPECTING YOUR PISTOLWhen you inspect your pistol, youshould first check for yourself to insurethat it is unloaded, To do this, grasp thepistol with your finger off the trigger andoutside the trigger guard, point themuzzle in a safe direction, rotate themanual safety lever fully down into the"safe" position as shown in Figures 1 &2, depress the magazine release, andremove the magazine. With the muzzlestill pointing in a safe direction, graspthe serrated sides of the slide from therear with the thumb and fingers asshown in Figure 3, and briskly draw theslide fully rearward in order to extractany cartridge from the barrel chamberand clear it from the pistol. Do notobstruct the ejection port becausedoing so can interfere with ejection of acartridge and thereby creates the riskof exploding an unchambered cartridgeand possible injury. In order to lock theslide in the open position, allow theslide to move slightly forward from therearmost position while pressingupward on the slide stop. You are nowable to safely check the barrel chamberand bore visually for any obstructions. You must follow this procedure everytime your pistol is inspected, cleaned, handed to another person, transportedor stored. Unload the magazine by

Your pistol has been treated with eithera preservative or oil to protect it againstcorrosion. Before use, oil should beremoved from exposed surfaces. Thebarrel bore and chamber should bewiped using a clean patch or swab.Care should be taken to prevent foreignmatter, including dirt and lint, fromentering the mechanism and beingtrapped by oil.

Familiarize yourself with the manualsafety lever on your autoloadingpistol. When the manual safety lever isfully up (parallel to the top of the slide)as shown in Figures 4 & 5, it is in the"fire" position; when the manual safetylever is fully down, as shown in Figures1 & 2, it is in the "safe" position. Noticehow the manual safety lever looks andfeels in each of the two positions of itsextreme travel-fully up for "fire" andfully down for "safe". Your pistol mayhave a red dot which is totally visiblewhen the manual safety lever is in the"fire" position; however, do not rely onyour inability to see a red dot as theonly indication that the manual safety isengaged.

LOADINGDo not load the pistol until you areready to use it. Keep your fingeroutside the trigger guard until you areready to fire.

WARNING:Smith & Wesson centerfire pistolsare designed to disengage thetrigger linkage, and thereby preventthe trigger from firing the pistol, when the magazine is removed fromthe pistol. After inserting amagazine, always test to make sureit is locked in place by applyingsome removal pressure to theexposed portion of the magazinebutt plate.

Only use Smith & Wessonmagazines specifically manufacturedfor your particular model of pistol.Do not interchange magazines fromone model pistol into another modelpistol.

Smith & Wesson has provided youwith a magazine designed to operatein your specific model of pistol. While your magazine may be able tobe inserted into another modelpistol, it will only function in thespecific model for which it wasdesigned.

Follow instructions in this manualand any other specific instructionswhich may be marked onto, oraccompany, a magazine. Failure touse the particular type of Smith &Wesson magazine specified for yourmodel and caliber of pistol mayresult in the malfunction of yourpistol.

12

Load the magazine by pressing acartridge head (rear of cartridge)downward on the forward portion of themagazine follower (or download on thecase of the previously-loaded cartridge)and sliding the cartridge fully under thelips of the magazine until the cartridgehead is against the rear wall of themagazine. Repeat the procedure forthe number of cartridges you wish toload, up to the magazine capacity. Donot attempt to load your magazine withmore than the specified number ofcartridges because doing so can causea feeding failure. Inspect the pistol aspreviously described.

Hold the pistol in one hand with themuzzle pointing in a safe direction andwith your finger off the trigger andoutside the trigger guard. Rotate themanual safety lever fully down into the"safe" position. Insert the loadedmagazine into the magazine well of thepistol until it is locked in place.

WARNING:Do not use excessive or violentupward force when inserting aloaded magazine into the pistol.Excessive and violent upward forcecould cause the slide to moveforward, chambering a round andmaking the pistol ready to fire.

To make sure that the magazine is fullyand securely inserted, apply someremoval pressure to the exposedportion of the magazine butt plate.Press down on the slide stop to releasethe slide and allow it to carry fullyforward. This strips a cartridge from themagazine and seats it in the chamberof the barrel.II you wish to restore the magazine inyour pistol to its full capacity, depress

CENTERFIRE PISTOLSthe magazine release and remove themagazine from the pistol. Rememberthat there is a round in the chamber;therefore, the weapon should beholstered or safely secured during thisprocess. Load one cartridge into themagazine to replace the one which waschambered when you allowed the slideto carry forward. Re-insert the loadedmagazine into the magazine well of thepistol until it is locked in place. To makesure that the magazine is again fullyand securely inserted, apply someremoval pressure to the exposedportion of the magazine butt plate.

Your pistol is now fully loaded. Thehammer IS down and resting againstthe manual safety block, the trigger isforward and the firing mechanism isdisengaged. Your pistol is now in asafe condition to be holstered andcarried. Never holster, carry or storeyour pistol with the hammer cocked.Remember to keep your pistol pointedin a safe direction under all conditionsand always keep your finger off thetrigger and outside the trigger guarduntil ready to fire. Never leave a loadedfirearm unattended.

WARNING:A loaded Smith & Wesson Pistol,Model 39, 52, 59, and 745, which hasan inertial firing pin without anautomatic firing safety plunger, candischarge accidentally with themanual safety in the "fire" position ifsubjected to sufficient impact, suchas being dropped onto the muzzle. Therefore, it is absolutely essentialthat the manual safety of any loadedModel 39, 52, 59, and 745 be kept inthe "safe" position until you areactually ready to fire.

Also, remember that pulling thetrigger with the manual safety in the

"fire" position will fire a loadeddouble-action pistol.

Pistols bearing Model Nos. 39, 52, 59,and 745 do not have an automaticfiring-pin safety plunger; therefore, forsafety, they were manufactured with ahammer which has a half-cock notch.

Second generation Smith & Wessonpistols bearing Model Nos. 439, 459,469, 639, 659, 669, and 645 and thirdgeneration Smith & Wesson pistolsbearing Model Nos. 411, 915, 3904,3906,3913,3914,5903,5904,5906,6904,6906,4506,4516, 1006, 1066,4006,4013,4014,4505,4566,4567,5905, and 4596 are manufactured withan automatic firing-pin safety plunger. The automatic firing-pin safety plungerprevents the firing-pin from movingforward and firing a cartridge unlessthe trigger is held to the rear. Thisfeature and the decocking function ofthe manual safety lever eliminate theneed for a hall-cock notch on thehammer.

All second generation pistols wereoriginally manufactured with hammerswhich had hall-cock notches. Somehammers in third generation pistolshave hall-cock notches and others donot. The presence or the absence of ahall-cock notch on the hammer of asecond or third generation pistol, asshipped from the factory, does notinterfere with its function in thesemodels, the hall-cock notch is notnecessary to function or carry thepistol safely.

13

Page 8: s w Centerfire Pistol

To avoid the possibility of assemblinga hammer without a half-cock notch inthe wrong pistol in the field, each suchhammer carries a marking designatingits use for a particular model of pistol.A hammer marked for use in a specif-ic model must only be used in thatdesignated model.

14

FIRING

With the muzzle pointed in a safedirection and your finger outside thetrigger guard, rotate the manual safetylever fully up into the "fire" position.Except for the Models 52 and 745,which can only be fired single action, the first shot from an uncocked center-fire pistol will be fired in the double-action mode. As the trigger is drawnfully to the rear, the hammer movesrearward and is released to strike thefiring pin. Upon firing the slide movesrearward thereby extracting and eject-ing the spent cartridge case and rotat-ing the hammer to the fully-cockedposition. The slide then returns for-ward feeding the next cartridge fromthe magazine to the barrel chamber. The hammer remains cocked positionand the trigger is in the rearward posi-tion so that subsequent shots will befired in the single action mode. Thissequence can be repeated until thelast round has been fired at whichtime the magazine follower exertsupward pressure on the slide stopcausing it to engage the slide and tohold it in the open position.

Warning:Single-action firing requires signifi-cantly less trigger pull and triggertravel than double action firing.

MANUAL COCKINGOn a pistol with an exposed hammerspur, the first shot may be fired in the

[single-action mode when so desired. You can prepare your pistol for single-

I

action firing by pointi~g the muzzle in asafe direction, removing your fingerfrom the trigger, rotating the manualsafety lever fully up into the "fire" posi-tion, and pulling the hammer spur asfar rearward as possible into the fully-cocked position.

DECOCKING

If you decide not to fire after you havemanually cocked the hammer or if youdecide to suspend firing, keep thepistol pointed in a safe direction, remove your finger from the triggerguard, and rotate the manual safetylever fully down into the "safe" position. This action will decock the hammerallowing it to fall against the manualsafety block and will release the triggerto its forward position. The pistol maynow be holstered and carried safely.

CLEARING MISFIRESIf, during firing a cartridge fails to fire, the pistol will remain in the doubleaction mode. If the situation permits, the trigger may be pulled once or twicemore. If ignition still fails, the chambermust be manually cleared. Rotate themanual safety lever fully down into the

"safe" position and wait ten secondswhile keeping the muzzle pointed in asafe direction. Grasp the serrated sidesof the slide from the rear and brisklypull the slide fully rearward to eject themisfired round. Do not obstruct theejection port, and do not attempt tocatch the round by placing your handover the ejection port. Also, rememberthat any time you release the slidewhile a magazine containing cartridgesis in the pistol, you will have reloadedthe chamber.

15

Page 9: s w Centerfire Pistol

UNLOADINGPoint the muzzle in a safe direction, rotate the manual safety lever fullydown into the "safe" position, depressthe magazine release, and remove themagazine. With the muzzle still pointingin a safe direction, and with your fingeroff the trigger and outside the triggerguard, grasp the serrafed sides of theslide from the rear with the thumb andfingers, and briskly draw the slide fullyrearward in order to extract any car-tridge from the barrel chamber andclear it from the pistol. Do not obstructthe ejection port because doing so caninterfere with ejection of a cartridge andthereby creates the risk of exploding anunchambered cartridge and possibleinjury. Visually check the barrel cham-ber to be sure it is empty.

Unload the magazine by holding it withthe bullet end of the cartridge pointingaway from you and pressing each car-tridge forward and out of the magazine.

SIGHT ADJUSTMENTCertain model Smith & Wesson Pistolsare equipped with a Fixed Rear Sightthat is adjustable for windage only. Toadjust, move the Rear Sight in thedirection you wish the group to moveon the target i.e. If the group shouldmove to the right, move the Rear Sightto the right. Use a brass or plastic driftor punch to prevent marring the RearSight. If the Rear Sight has a set screw, loosen the set screw prior to movingthe Rear Sight. Tighten the set screwafter the sight has been adjusted to thedesired position.

Certain model Smith & Wesson Pistolsare equipped with a screw type RearSight adjustable for elevation andwindage.

ADJUSTING FOR ELEVATIONRotate the Adjusting Screw installed inthe top of the Rear Sight body clock-wise to lower the Rear Sight or coun-terclockwise to raise the Rear Sight.(Raising Rear Sight will raise the group, etc.)

ADJUSTING FOR WINDAGERotate the Adjusting Screw installed inthe right side of Rear Sight body clock-wise to move the Rear Sight Blade tothe right or counterclockwise to move itto the left. (Moving Rear Sight to theright will move the group to the right, etc.)

FIELD STRIPPING-DISASSEMBLY

Remove the magazine by depressingthe magazine release button andinspect and clear the chamber. Rotatethe manual safety lever fully up into the

"fire" position. Firmly grasp the frameand slide with the left hand. While hold-ing the left hand as explained above, position the right hand on the grip asshown in Figure 6 keeping your fingersoutside of the trigger guard and off of

the trigger. Apply pressure with the leftand right hands in opposite directionsuntil the slide stop notch in the left sideof the slide is aligned with the forward, rounded portion of the slide stop asshown in Figure 7. Press inward on theslide stop pin from the opposite side ofthe frame and remove the slide stop.

MAINTENANCE

Your pistol is a precision instrumentand to insure reliable function, it is nec-essary to follow a routine maintenanceprocedure. After firing your pistol, besure to unload it following the proce-dure outlined in the section entitled"Unloading" on page 16 before anycleaning or maintenance procedure.Your pistol should be cleaned by brush-ing the barrel bore and chamber with agood powder-removing solvent andbore brush. Wipe the areas clean withpatches or a swab. Using a small brushdipped in solvent, remove all depositsfrom around the breech of the barreland chamber, extractor and adjacentareas which have been subjected tothe action of powder or primer residue.Remove any residue on the frame withlight brushing and a solvent. Aftercleaning the entire gun, use a cloth toapply a light coating of high quality gunoil to all external surfaces and wipeclean.

After the initial cleaning, there is usual-lysome residue in the barrel that worksout and becomes apparent within 24-48 hours. This can be removed with abristle brush and a light re-applicationof powder-removing solvent after whichthe oil film should be re-established onall surfaces.

For additional maintenance, we recom-mend the services of a qualified gun-smith. Please refer to section entitled"Service".
