FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Friends in Christ,

We have been reading and pondering the Gospel

of Luke in worship this year. Luke quotes Jesus

talking about money a lot. We have taken a seri-

ous look at what Jesus says about our relation-

ship with money for our whole life, because Jesus wasn’t only talking

about giving money in the weekly offering.

For three weeks in October we are going look specifically at how our

relationship with money can strengthen our ministry at Saint Luke

for the benefit of all God’s community. I was pleased when the Jim

Callison and the Finance Committee asked us to focus our steward-

ship commitment in October around John Wesley’s wise teachings.

His teachings are Biblical, practical and thoughtful. It is my prayer

that we will all be challenged and encouraged to “gain all you can,

save all you can and give all you can.” I look forward to the conversa-

tions we will have and the commitment we will make together.

Peace,

Cindy

Hitting all the right notes...

The St. Luke Staff Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that Ann Hoppert Keller

has accepted the position of St. Luke Music Coordinator. Ann’s role will include arranging for

organists and pianists each Sunday as well as playing the organ or piano for some Sunday ser-

vices, working with Pastor Cindy to select hymns/music for Sunday worship, arranging perfor-

mances from a variety of different musical groups at St. Luke, supervising the maintenance and

tuning of the organ and piano, and other responsibilities relating to music coordination. Ann

will continue to share the responsibilities of playing for Sunday worship throughout the month

with Ann Rodewall and Arody Carrazco.

Ann will continue to fulfill her role as the St. Luke Choir Director, as she has for over the past

20 years, while she assumes the additional responsibilities of St. Luke Music Coordinator.

Please express your personal gratitude to Ann for her willingness to fill such an important posi-

tion in the music ministry of St. Luke.

College student information

Please help us stay connected with all of our college students. If you or your child are away at

college, send us current mailing address, email and phone number. Even if you think we already

have that information, a quick confirmation will help us provide the best possible spiritual care

for our students away at school. If you or your child have a preferred form of communication

(texting, email or voice call), let us know that as well. Send this information to

[email protected] or drop it by the church office.

Your finance team

August was a pretty good month as revenues exceed expenses by $913.87. However, if our pledges were up to date we would be in much better financial shape. Pledges are currently $21,541.00 in arrears. If all pledges were current we would be able to bring our apportionment giving up to date. Apportionments are our shared commitment to mission and ministry throughout the world. This brings us to the pledge campaign for 2017.

What did John (Wesley) say? Actually, John Wesley had three rules for wealth and they sound very simple. They are: Make all you can, save all you can, and, give all you can. But are they simple? Starting on October 9th you will read in the weekly Grapevine and hear on Sunday some of the complications of making all you can. The next Sundays we will consider the next two rules. We will have a consecration service on October 30th. You will receive a pledge card in the mail during the first week of October.

We anticipate that our budgeted expense for 2017 will be unchanged from this year. Based on

this year, we will need to increase our giving by about $51,000 to balance the 2017 budget. We

can meet this goal through increased giving or increased membership. Where it done all

though giving, pledges on average would have to be increased by a little over a dollar a day.

That is less than two Starbucks coffees a week. Of course, for some people that is a simple mat-

ter. However, there are some for whom a daily Starbucks is beyond their budget. It is up to

each family to prayerfully determine how much you can increase your giving to help all of us

meet a budget that is faithful to our local and global commitments to ministry in Christ’s name.

I’m confident that the congregation will rise to the challenge and allow the financial team the

privilege of submitting a balanced budget to the Administrative Board.

2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Average

Budget revenues $351,494 $345,807 $311,418 $284,525 $292,400

Budget expenses $350,352 $367,364 $358,074 $352,221 $344,020 $354,406.20

Budget net $1,142 -$21,557 -$46,656 -$67,696 -$51,620

Sweet Life Café

A Women’s retreat led by Kathy Reid, Saturday, October 22nd from 9 am-3 pm at Faith United

Methodist Church in Sheboygan Falls. Guided worship, uplifting music, and small group dis-

cussions. This retreat provides an experience that allows women to slow down and savor time

with God and each other. Like a cozy day at your favorite coffee shop—women are invited to

find rest, laugh and share their stories, and grow closer to each other and God. Cost: $15. Res-

ervations: 920-467-6244.

Did you know that October is Pastor Appreciation

Month?

Other than parenting, few jobs are truly 24/7, and being a pastor is one of them. Pastor Cindy

arrives at the church long before I do every morning, and I often see her still at church long af-

ter the office closes at 4:00 pm. “Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who

work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest

regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13,

NIV).

During the month of October, find ways that you can show your appreciation for Pastor Cindy.

Some ideas may include: pray for Pastor Cindy (and Terry!), send her words of encouragement,

write a thank you card, bake a pie or a meal, give her a drawing from your child, a hand written

note, or a gift card. Why not take some time now to think about how you can express your ap-

preciation to Pastor Cindy.

Piano free for the hauling

You could be the proud owner of this classic piano now stored in a lonely, old closet. It needs a

new home. Please stop in at the church to see Rick Thimmig or call 458-3461 asap.

Headed South for the winter months?

Let the church office know your winter address and what dates you will be gone.

United Methodist Women

Newly installed officers for the St. Luke United Methodist women's organization. We raise

funds to support mission efforts. At this last meeting, we enjoyed a "baby shower", and in the

photo below see the items we donated to the New Hope Pregnancy Center here in Sheboygan.

Their executive director, Jacky Drewry, told us that they support women facing unplanned preg-

nancies. They provide classes on health, child care, parenting, etc. The women can earn points

by attending classes and spend those points in their Baby Boutique, where our gifts will be add-

ed. They offer support for mothers and their infants through the age of 2.
