Stewardship of Life

Dear Sisters & Brothers -

As I write this, I just decided NOT to fly into the eye of the mega-storm/hurricane Sandy that is landing in the Eastern United States this week. Although I wanted to attend a much-anticipated seminary reunion and learn more current scholarship on marriage from a Lutheran perspective, I consider my decision one of many we all make each day as stewards of our lives.

From Sundays & Seasons , Year B 2012 p. 303-305: Stewardship in the Christian church is “stewardship of all of life, not just the pocketbook (but not excluding that either). Examination of the lives of saints can be a powerful method for observing whole-life stewardship in all walks of life and placing that stewardship in biblical perspective.”

“The first Sunday of November is devoted not to specific saints but to all saints. One reason we remember the saints is precisely because they were such great stewards of God’s grace while among us. Often, the churches in which we worship were built because of the sacrificial giving of those who have gone before.”

“Furthermore, the saints are those who, in every age, have recognized that ‘The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those that dwell therein’ (Ps. 24:1). There is something about the saints—they know everything is about God, not about them—so that even as we commemorate and remember them, they are pointing away from themselves and towards the One who is all in all for them, namely God.”

“What this means is that, in every context, it is not our stewardship of what God has given us that will finally matter, but rather that God has entrusted us with everything, and will give us even more.”

As we worship in November, you will hear me reflect on the life & witness & stewardship of various saints—especially those who have challenged social practices, challenged the typical way of thinking, and lived out the importance of Christian mission, ministries, & hospitality in the world. I pray those reflections will help us all embrace and extend our stewardship of life—today and all days! A fellow steward journeying with you, in Christ,

+ Pr. Betty

President’s Letter/Council Corner/November 2012

Dear All:

With autumn comes the falling of leaves, setting our clocks back, Reformation Sunday, All Saints Day, Thanksgiving Day and the dreaded annual Stewardship campaign. Every year this takes place and, for me, every year I internally understand why someone needs to get up and speak to us about the importance of stewardship – financial stewardship. The spreadsheets for 2013 budgets are beginning to take shape. Being involved in the various aspects of this long-standing, often painful ordeal, I can tell you that I don’t really look forward to this part of autumn. Likely, that person designated to “lead the stewardship charge” doesn’t either.

So let’s all take a deep breath and let the air out slowly as we collectively spend a few moments thinking about stewardship here at St. Paul’s. Yes, it is financial stewardship – it’s the weekly offering that goes to the operating budget. That means heat, lights, maintenance for the building and for the various personnel and programs St. Paul’s offers to its members, its surrounding community and its broader/global community. Take a look at the back of the bulletin on who is using our facility during the week. Our open doors provide a place for many. This place is an important place for many that hunger – in many senses of the word. Supporting a boring line item called “operating budget” is critical to keeping ministries housed here functioning.

However, financial stewardship is more than the operating budget. It is the “dare to dream” projects we have started and completed this year. It is the public declaration that our doors are truly open for all with the well designed front entrance. It is also the now in-full-swing kitchen renovation project. A matching gift program, similar to the front door campaign, is challenging us and others interested in getting our kitchen up to health code standards and providing the users of the kitchen a better environment. Two huge challenges and two opportunities to witness to the gracious act of giving in abundance. Perhaps we are patterning our behavior after that of our God.

Finally, stewardship is more than financial giving, it’s the giving of our gifts, our talents, our hospitality and our love. Again, take a look at the back of the bulletin to see the cast of characters that play a role in the Sunday worship service and throughout the week. Also, know there is another long list of folks that you won’t see that are taking care of some aspect of our community here at St. Paul’s. All busy people and all interested in giving something to make our ministries of worship, mission, and within all aspects of our life experiences richer.

OK, you’ve slowly let that breath out. Now fill those lungs full of fresh air. The rib cage grows and the shoulders roll back. That’s a good posture to have – add the smile starting from your heart and take comfort that this community has been blessed and takes giving back to the larger community seriously.

We practice stewardship throughout the year. And we need to be reminded that we need to continue on and fight the good fight. Let’s consider taking this responsibility of stewardship as an honor and a privilege. And let’s continue to keep it as a forethought.

And yes, it would be nice if we all could keep stewardship as a “top of mind” action without having to hear the annual autumn stewardship message, but it won’t be this year.

On the Congregational Council front, we met Thursday, October 18 for our regularly scheduled meeting. In addition to the “standard agenda items,” the Council worked on the constitution and bylaws required by the Metro Synod for all churches. Previously, Council had reviewed and commented on various revisions to St. Paul’s Constitution and Bylaws so we spent the evening (a long one at that) choosing the words that best reflect our congregation’s views. After much hard work, the approved documents will be presented to the congregation for review and voting at our annual meeting. These revised Constitution and Bylaws, which guide, direct, and assist us in mission and ministry together, will be available to all soon. A big thank you to Louis Bell for leading this effort on our behalf.

Whether it’s the hospitality of serving coffee and snacks following worship, providing a space for the recently held Leadership Forum on Christian-Muslim Engagement, hosting the weekly Sunday Soup Kitchen or facilitating the Chapel-as-hotel space for the Rochester youth group mission trip, we offer our hospitality to guests and strangers on their journeys. It’s a gift to them and it is a gift to us.

Blessings and peace be to you, Peter

A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR SOUP KITCHEN!! We recently learned that St. Paul’s has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Thrivent Financial to help us make improvements to our kitchen. Thrivent awarded the grant to congregations who have been stretched and challenged in this economy to do outreach ministry in their communities. We applied for and received the grant to support our Soup Kitchen ministry by making necessary improvements to our kitchen. Even more exciting, Thrivent has offered us the opportunity to receive an additional challenge grant. For every dollar that we raise between now and the end of 2012 for the Soup Kitchen renovations, Thrivent will match 50 cents, up to an additional $5,000. That means that, if we can raise $10,000, we could have a fund of $20,000 to make improvements specifically for the kitchen. (Made up of the $5,000 Thrivent grant that we already received + $10,000 in funds that we raise by 12/31/12 + a $5,000 matching Thrivent grant) Why do we need to make improvements, and why now? Frankly, we had not planned – so soon after the WELCOME campaign to build our new ramp – to make a capital campaign appeal. But with Thrivent’s unexpected challenge grant offer, we believe that God is calling us to be courageous and trust in God’s promise of abundance. Thanks to our well-located building and the passion of the congregation for the Soup Kitchen ministry, the Interfaith Sunday Soup Kitchen at St. Paul's provides more than 5,000 meals each year to the hungry in our community. The Soup Kitchen is a safe haven for our guests, a place where our volunteers can respond in a tangible way to God's command to feed the hungry and love one another – and a way for our congregation to put in practice God’s command to welcome the stranger – every single week of the year. Unfortunately, our cramped and outdated kitchen is just barely adequate to the needs of the serving groups who serve at the Soup Kitchen. For a long time, we have been in violation of the health code requirement to have a divided, 3-part sink to wash, rinse, and sterilize. Following our last health department inspection, we were informed that the City will not continue to tolerate this problem. Quite simply, we must get the new sink installed if we want to continue to operate the Soup Kitchen. That means plumbing work, custom stainless steel work, and re-configuring our current space. An expensive and daunting project! Additionally, we lack sufficient hot water capacity, and the kitchen lacks sufficient room and counter space to allow volunteers to safely move about the kitchen as they prepare meals. And we have long been concerned about the congestion at the top of the stairs where volunteers enter and exit the kitchen.

NOVEMBER MONTHLY MISSION Above-and-beyond giving to help special missions chosen by our congregation to be highlighted each month. You may use your monthly mission envelope or the special

envelopes found in the Narthex.

SOUP KITCHEN CHALLENGE GRANT

See Paula Ketcham’s above article on the Thrivent Soup Kitchen Renovation Challenge Grant or to donate online

go to the link below:

http://www.razoo.com/story/Connecting-The-Hungry-With-The-Hungry-To-Serve

What are we doing to raise the money? In addition to challenging each other within our congregation, we are looking to our Soup Kitchen serving group community to help out. Over the years, many serving group volunteers have asked us how they can help with Soup Kitchen needs. Now we have a way, and we are ask-ing them to contribute, as well. We are making an appeal to all of the congregations and organizations who serve at the Soup Kitchen.

Why the rush?

In order to count toward the Thrivent matching grant, the funds must be received before December 31, 2012. Every dollar that you contribute will result in another 50 cents from Thrivent (up to $5,000 in matching funds). We don't want to lose this opportunity and your help could make all the difference! You may donate by sending a check, payable to St. Paul Lutheran Church and designated for the Soup Kitchen Challenge Grant or online at www.stpaulevanston.org (follow the links to the Soup Kitchen Challenge Grant donation page and then click on the “Donate Now” button).

When will the project begin?

We will begin planning now, although the scope of the project will depend on our budget – and we won’t know that until the end of the year. In addition to installing a new three-part sink and increasing our hot water capacity, we have been talking for a long time about the possibility of demol-ishing the stage and enlarging the kitchen, with long stainless steel tables, into that area. We are looking for a team. If you have ideas, expertise, know-how, or a passion for remodeling, please con-tact Paula Ketcham at [email protected].

We would be grateful if you would circulate this appeal anyone who you think might be interested in helping out.

Thank you for your support!

Joan Brandt, President

Notes from the Co-Treasurers for September:

The September 2012 total income, including regular gifts and facility use was $ 17,880; September expenses were $ 19,430. We did not borrow additional funds from our line of credit in September. Year-to-date we have borrowed $ 17,000 from our line of credit. Year-to-date, giving is $ 10,430 behind budget, and expenses are $ 16,640 behind budget, keeping in mind that we budgeted a $34,500 deficit. Current balance on the roof loan (principal amount owed) is down to $ 9,950, so we are on target to meet the roof loan goals. The bill for the boiler is in, it will be paid shortly. A gift made for the purchase of the new boiler will cover all but $885 of the final cost. The balance will be paid out of operating funds. If you have any questions, please direct them to Carol Garrett or Nancy Hoffman, your co-treasurers.

A NOTE FROM DEBBIE NELSON, FINANCIAL SECRETARY:

Third quarter statements are now available. Please see Debbie Nelson, Finance secretary, to receive your statement. Thank you.
