Let’s finish up the history of our parish,
using the history of the parish book pub-
lished in 2003 and other sources:
In August 1994, Father McIntyre
moved to St. Anne’s parish in Hamel. The
seventh pastor to come was Fr. James
Wolnik, who was made pastor in October
1994. At the "me that Fr. Wolnik came, the
Gathering Place was completed and within
months of his arrival, the parish finished the Adora"on Chap-
el, which was dedicated in December of 1994. Ever since
then, our parish has con"nued Adora"on of the Blessed Sac-
rament now for 23 years. Fr. Wolnik also ini"ated the proces-
sion of gi's every Sunday, a tradi"on we con"nue today. Be-
fore Fr. Wolnik came, there was already some debate about
the future of the school. This con"nued when Fr. Wolnik ar-
rived, and unfortunately it resulted in both Fr. Wolnik and the
school principal moving on to other assignments in early
1997. Fr. Wolnik moved to the Archdiocese of Vancouver for
a "me before returning to the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and
Minneapolis.
On June 18, 1997 Fr. Mark Dosh was assigned to St.
John the Bap"st in Excelsior, becoming our eighth Pastor. Fr.
Dosh was born on July 28, 1932 and a*ended Nazareth Hall
Seminary. He was chosen to finish his seminary studies in
Louvain, Belgium, where he spent 6 years of study. Fr. Dosh
was ordained June 25, 1958 for the Archdiocese of St. Paul
and Minneapolis. A'er ordina"on, he also received his PhD in
Philosophy and his Master in Theology. Fr. Dosh was a profes-
sor at the Saint Paul Seminary for 17 years, and then was as-
signed to a couple other parishes in the Archdiocese. In 1993,
Fr. Dosh volunteered to serve the mission parish of the Arch-
diocese in Venezuela, where he served un"l being assigned
to St. John’s.
Fr. Dosh requested that he be sent to a parish with a
school, and his appointment to our parish resolved any
doubts about the future of our school. Fr. Dosh served as
pastor at St. John the Bap"st un"l June 30, 2013. During this
"me, he helped bring our parish stability and helped count-
less parishioners grow in their faith by his teaching and most
especially witness of faith. Fr. Dosh served as our pastor for
16 years and “re"red” at the age of 81 (most priests re"re
from being a pastor at 70). Un"l recently, Fr. Dosh helped out
at St. Charles Borromeo in Northeast Minneapolis. He now
resides at Li*le Sisters of the Poor in St. Paul. Although there
is much to write about Fr. Dosh and the years that he served
here, I think it best that you ask fellow parishioners about
him and about his years here. There is no doubt in my mind
that our parish was served by a very holy man, who truly is in
love with God.
To bring us up to the future, I was assigned to St.
John’s as the ninth Pastor on July 1, 2013. Since then we have
purchased a rectory for the priests to live in, our school has

transi"oned to a new educa"onal model, now opera"ng as a Cath-
olic Montessori school, and we are about to embark on the second
phase of our Campaign that started in 1993. Our parish has been in
existence for 114 years now, and ever since that first Mass on East-
er Sunday 1904, our mission has remained the same: helping the
residents of Excelsior and surrounding communi"es experience
Christ through the sacraments. The history of this parish in no way
encompasses all that our parish has done over the years, but I hope
that it has helped you see a li*le bit of where we came from, and
how God has blessed us over the years.
God Bless,
Fr. Carlson

do we really know what prayer is? Do
we know how to pray? Are we
convinced that we need to pray?

Endow envisions a world where every woman has the opportuni"es, the knowledge, the courage and the support to be the
best version of themselves – made in the image and likeness of God. And, being made in God’s image, it is our vision that
each woman encounters her infinite value and dignity, untold talents and beauty, each deserving of respect and of love.
