INTRODUCTION

The integration of devices and an intelligent networking in

a home can make it smart by allowing us to manage

energy in a way that is appropriate.

To better control of energy consumption in the Smart

Home, the Home Area Network (HAN) is used to collect

sensor information.

Zigbee is a high technology for the Smart Home network

communication.

HOME APPLIANCES CONTROL IN SMART HOMES

It is necessary to investigate the electric power sources

that support the normal operation and management in a

house.

It is necessary to know what kind of configuration and

control are indispensable to build a smart home.

Architectural and functional requirements on behalf of

utilities in the design of smart homes should be taken

into serious consideration.

OPERATION MODE IN A SMART HOME

The smart control mainly consists of three types of scenarios:

When the residents stay at home.

When there is nobody at home.

When the meter receives the notification of demand-response from utilities.

ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 are standards-based protocols that provide the network infrastructure required for wireless sensor network applications.

For sensor network applications, key design requirements support communication between large numbers of devices in multi-application environment.

Design and Implementation

The structure of Wireless Sensor Networks in the smart home requires three different devices: Coordinator, Router and End Device.

All home environments can then be monitored and the required data can be delivered to the coordinator.

Then appropriate control commands are sent through coordinator to home appliances.

Page 14: S home

In this environment, the coordinator is integrated with the home gateway

that handles the control data in the mesh network.

The household devices are attached to the router or the reduced function

node module.

In order to address the problem of interconnection between appliances and

the Zigbee wireless module, we adopted the SAANet Protocol.

Page 15: S home

The experimental system is divided into three main parts:• A user interface communicates with the user via the computer and displays the results.

• A coordinator collects sensor readings to the user.

• An end device consists of two parts: sensor interface and ZigBee interface. The sensor used in this test is a temperature sensor.

Operation Mode in a Smart HomeIn terms of energy management, the operation mode is intended for two categories:

Home Applianceso HVAC system integrated with thermostats and Infrared/motion

sensors.o Daily appliances with thermostat.o Lighting system connected with temperature sensors.o Digital entertainment appliances with Infrared or motion sensor.

Renewable energy sources.o PV system/wind turbine.o PHV/PHEV(plug-in hybrid vehicle)

Networking patterns and technology for home energy control

Page 19: S home

The network infrastructure is the basic skeleton for smart home construction. The smart home is functionally categorized into two main networks:

• Broadband communication network• Control network

The broadband communication network is mostly attached to home

entertainment devices.

The control network mainly supervises the regular operation for all

kinds of home devices such as the switching-on/off for lamps, start/stop

of air-conditioner.

Page 20: S home

Technically, two types of networking techniques are widely adopted in the field of home appliance control.

Directly transmit data over power lines. The mainstream protocol is PLC (Power Line Communication).

Exchange data between sender and receiver in a wireless. The representative protocols in that case are Bluetooth, 802.15.4/ZigBee .

Page 21: S home

There are some factors such as a distance between the end device and the coordinator and

also some obstacles which affected to the RSSI performance.

On the contrary, the presence of a variable speed drive does not obstruct the signal sent by

the Zigbee modules.

All in all, the quality of wireless link of WSNs based on Zigbee technology depends on the

distance between nodes, the location of each sensor nodes and obstacles between them.

All these communication systems Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Bluetooth operate at the same

frequency bands. However, the interference problem between Zigbee and other devices

can occur.

In this context, future research will be based on the possibility of coexistence between

these different wireless protocols in a smart home.
